It's still a viable medium. There's a lot to recommend it over the
forums, like the lack of power-tripping mods. Unless you want that, then
there's always moderated groups.

3 new users in almost as many days. What can it mean?

Yeah, still viable.

It's always a trade off between power tripping mods or spam, trolls, and
flame wars. Which would you prefer?

Been a long time since I've seen a good flame war...

Sadly, my client doesn't seem to be quoting properly. :/ It *used* to work.

Windows Live Mail sucks balls. Get a real newsreader :)
You can make it kinda quote properly but it requires a lotta
tweaking...not really worth the hassle.

FYI

Ew.

You may as well call me a new user, too - I've been (mostly lurking)
around on Usenet proper[0] for, oh, three years or so...

This group is dead though, Jim.
Beam yourself to a webbie forum.

Hey! :) Sorry to be so late in replying; my mailserver was having issues,
and it took a while to get everything fixed.

AF, like a lot of newsgroups, waxes and wanes on a weg-, er, regular basis.
Sadly, it's waning right now (and me without my umbrella).

In any event, it's a pleasure to welcome you to AFF. Wanderer Werewolf at
your service, with complimentary virtual fruit basket and imaginary apple
cider. (Non-alcoholic, sorry. Can't have you Posting Under the Influence,
y'know. ;) )

So, what bring you to Furrydom?

Yeah... I think I managed to do it before.

Just... I dunno. Seems more broken than it was before. I used to use this
for news...

This will make it easier to get to...

<http://richardhayjr.wordpress.com/2010/01/29/open-windows-live-mail-in-newsreader-mode/>

Follow the instructions and it will open in *newsreader* mode automatically.
AS far as quoting properly...you'll have to downgrade your WLM client to
a *previous* version...read on here:
<http://www.w7forums.com/windows-live-mail-not-use-quoting-t11688.html>

Protip: use Xnews or Thunderbird.

do i need to buy a newsgroup/usenet service to get this through thunderbird?

i already have icedove on debian, so i figured i'd just use that.

but i really have no idea how to use usenet, it's pretty obscure these days.

For Linux, the Pan newsreader is best. Easy to set up and full-featured.

There are free Usenet services, but use the server "nntp.aioe.org" to get
started because that requires no registration, and it's fine for
continuing use if you don't exceed its limits -- see the aioe.org webpage.

In article <ia7ev7du89jnt4ril...@4ax.com>,
fa...@see.replyto.header says...
I use eternal september, myself, which is free. http://www.eternal-
september.org/

Barry Gold recently sent me a very detailed description of how to sign
up from Thunderbird, which can now be found in the Filk FAQ on the "My
ISP dropped usenet!" page here http://www.kayshapero.net/filkunet.htm
along with a list of suggested newsgroup feeds.
