Holy sh**!! You guys have been working hard, I see.
Any important bugs / restrictions, or is it the entire game, working
like old and LOOKING LIKE THIS!?

Wow. That is a thing of beauty. As I've probably mentioned on this group
before I never particularly liked FFE. Bugs notwithstanding I always
considered it the uglier sibling of the simpler, cleaner FE2. The
graphics engine always seemed to be struggling to render an
overly-complicated world on a low resolution canvas. But this D3D
version is just gorgeous.
There are still clearly some graphical issues to resolve such as
flickering textures and some objects -- particularly ship weapons --
disappearing at certain viewing angles. And the ship passing behind the
planet in the intro is too funny.
But overall the effect is incredible. I'm running it full screen at
1440x900 and it's just amazing. Frontier space has never looked better.
It's hard to believe the core code behind this game is 18 years old.
Kudos to David Braben and his team for creating a game engine so far
ahead of its time, and to the team behind the D3D makeover for releasing
the full potential of it all these years later.
I will keep a very close eye on this project. This may well be the
version that finally encourages me to play FFE "properly" rather than
just dabble occasionally, which is all I've ever managed over the past
two decades.

(After some 30 min of downloading ...)
WOW! It is stunning! Brings back memories of when I saw the first X game, but
this *has* the proper game play! And the music is re-sampled very well, goes
*perfectly* with the graphics.
A few minor glitches -- nothing everybody else won't notice: Barnard's star is
sometimes invisible; Krüger and CD°xxx stars have the names as in the executable
(with ']' and '^'). Some depth sorting issues. The milky way map behaves odd on
zooming in and out. Sadly, not every model has been re-done with ultra-hi-rez
textures (on the other hand, those that are, are marvellous). The intro looks
nice -- but no swinging tail on the explorer? And wot -- no ships near the space
stations in the map?
But what a beauty it is! WELL DONE Dreamzz and friends!
[Jongware]
It certainly is but isn't it a bit optimistic to call it a Beta release?
There are still a *lot* of bugs and glitches to be ironed out.
By way of comparison:- Google Chrome is Beta at the moment and runs almost
perfectly....
So far, though, with FFED3D - Lovely!

Which it isn't, of course. It's closer to 13 years. Mea culpa.

It certainly looks the same so far, doing the milk run from Barnard's to Sol to
get some money. I understand Alexander "DreamZzz" 'merely' [*] replaced the
graphics engine in JJFFE's re-compilable sources, so any other than display bugs
should not happen. That reminds me: therefore it should be possible to load one
of my saved JJFFE games w/o any problem, I'll try that later.
In the mean time, do not I repeat DO NOT switch from full-screen to the task
manager. The game will not ever switch back -- or at least, on my system it
doesn't. Ah well, it's a beta after all.
[*] The word 'merely' does not convey the proper connotations of awe, I'm
afraid.
[Jongware]
I never had FFE....how on Earth do you launch after you have asked for
your launch request!?
OK scrap that....I've figured it out
Yeah, I get that as well, though JJFFE savegames do work perfectly.
One problem I have is that in 1024x768 fullscreen mode, I have to click a
couple of cm *above* each icon to activate it.
So, in short, great stuff but plenty to sort out :-)
>One problem I have is that in 1024x768 fullscreen mode, I have to click a
>couple of cm *above* each icon to activate it.
I had similar problems with mouse position in 1024x768 full screen, but
when I switched to my monitors native resolution of 1440x900 the problem
went away. I'm guessing it's something to do with scaling the mouse
position to the screen resolution.

"If this resume doesn't blow your hat off, please return it in the

I needed d3dx9_29.dll in the folder to run this, maybe it could be
included in the .rar?
Superb release. Relearning the keys... not being able to switch in and
out of the app is a problem though.
And might I also say it's incredible how this NG wakes up when there's
some proper news. So many lurkers, so little product from Braben.
This isn't "proper news"; it's a very good bit of programming which still
has a long way to go.
Hmmm, thanks for that.
Not sure what it was a "hotfix" for, but it's taken me down to 2 fps :-(
Have to say, same here...although it only tends to be around planets and
nebulae (?)

Daniel Blakemore
Tried that...didn't help, I'm afraid :( Could it be that certain textures
are a little processor-hungry? I can't believe you've souped-up FFE so well
that even a modern PC has trouble ;)
--
Daniel Blakemore
Yeah, marginal improvement for me on medium detail (5-6 fps)
Something seems to have gone a bit wrong since the previous release, where I
was getting about 20 fps.
That is still nowhere near what I get with glffe (nic's mod) where I'm at 50
fps minimum, but I do realise there's a lot more going on graphically in
DreamZzz version.
FFS, some people are hard to please. Can we have radio silence until
the official Elite 4 release day please?
(Odd. First time ever I see this abbr, and yet I fully comprehend it.)
I think this is a BIG hint to Frontier Devs -- we're clutching to whatever
someone throws at us!
And huge nods to Alexander "DreamZzz", because this isn't some clever 'bit of
programming'. Fully comprehending the graphics engine behind FFE is (and
probably will be forever) beyond my reach.
I'd love to see the reaction at the FD HQ: "Oh my god, it looks better than our
prototype."
[Jongware]
WAHEY!!! A marked improvement...still a tiny bit jumpy in places, but
nowhere near as bad as it was. Seems to be more around starports/cities and
when getting pretty close to planets.
Looking forward to seeing what other tricks you can teach this faithful old
dog of a game ;D

Didn't help, though as I don't understand what they all mean I just tried
changing a few values.
Still on 1-3 fps :-(
Also, on the config menu within the game, I have to click on the line
*below* the one I want. Very strange.
I didn't need to change any values...the default ones on the included .CFG
file were fine... Plus, try medium/low graphics level, and try playing it
in a window.
> Also, on the config menu within the game, I have to click on the line
> *below* the one I want. Very strange.
Are you playing the game in fullscreen at a different resolution than your
normal desktop?
--
Daniel Blakemore
I'm playing fullscreen at 1024x768, which is my normal desktop resolution,
but I've tried windowed mode as well.
It may be a graphics card / driver issue, as glFrontier only runs at 20fps.
Strangely though, as I've mentioned before, glFFE absolutely flies!
Computers, eh?
Wow. Just.... wow. This is an amazing piece of code. Windows-specific
or portable? And is there a home website? I don't want to bookmark a
newsgroup post if I can help it.
http://www.elite-games.ru/conference/viewforum.php?f=43 (russian)
Thanks! I appreciate it. (* hunts for a Russian-to-English
Babelfish.... *)
Shaders get parameters:
float4x4 viewprojmat - view*proj matrix
float4x4 worldmat - model world matrix
float4 light - light source coords
float4 lightcol - light source color
float4 ambient - ambient color
For bump etc., internal and external models:
texture skin8 - from file skin8.png
texture skin9 - from file skin9.png
texture skin10 - from file skin10.png
For internal models:
texture tex - current polygon texture
int texnum - texture number
For external models:
texture skin - from file skin.png
Very clever stuff if I may say so.
Can I download the whole thing "patched"?
> http://www.elite-games.ru/conference/viewforum.php?f=43 (russian)
Pity there isn't an English version, I don't really like linking
direct to files and it would be helpful for there to be a potted
summary of what FFED3D offers.
I'll see how well it works on my machine eventually but at the moment
I'm playing IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. Got to Berlin in my Russian fighter
campaign and I'm now flying a lovely Lavochkin La-7.

What's going on with FFE3D? The thread seems to have gone quiet, no
others have sprung up, and the only newer stuff posted on the group
seems to be spam.
Out of curiosity, what computer language is being used for the new
coding? If it's C or C++, you might be able to get some speed
improvements using something like Cilk, and you can certainly get some
very nice free tools for identifying rough spots in the code.
crap.. and no linux version!!! ;_;
But unfortunatelly, I cant run it on fullscreen, not even pressing alt
+enter.
I switched to an ATI card to get better D3D performance. Turns out to be a
good choice and it's fullscreen too :-)
There is a thread on the forum for English speakers. But no, there
haven't been any updates in a while. The next one should be a big one
though, there have been new models etc added from what I can tell from
reading the English speaking thread.

Well... I've downloaded and played. Yes, there are some things to fix
but I want to thank you guys...
You are making an AWESOME work! Keep on with this great project!!
And... Uhm... Being the big lamer that I am...
It's a pity that BUFFET doesn't work with it... :-)
