Sting-Rays, Sting-Ray Krate bikes, Raleigh Choppers, 3spd Raleigh
'Roadsters', Huffy Rails, Donny & Marie 'Swing Bikes'...

Anyone ride any of these? The Raleigh Chopper has to be the ugliest
bicycle ever made. Somewhere I saw some pictures of these bikes
on the web. If I can't find the pix on the web, I'll scan my
Chopper and post the location of the picture.

We had Schwin''s Lemon Peelers, Orange Peelers, and Apple Peelers.

Three speeds with a banana seat.

Yeah, who can forget bikes in those days, with the high handlebars, banana
seats, "Sissy bars" on the back, and even the little 'fringe' things
coming out of the handlebars!

Remember how *cool* it was to get a speedometer/odometer for your bike?

Nothing as cool as the sparkled inlay on the seats as well as the
handlebar grips!!! And yes, speedometers rule! "Jimmy, I was going 22
down the hill!!!"

P.s.- This is my first post! Can't believe this is here. Has anyone
started a list of 70's games? Starting with of course, Gnip-Gnop!!!

I had Gnip-Gnop. I killed at Gnip-Gnop. Ya know...I think my parents still
have it in the attic!

The bikes at http://users.aol.com/Menotomy have those sparkle
grips and seats. You can see 'em if you look closely at the
pictures. The blue Sting-ray looks like it has a speedometer, too!!

I just picked up a Sears Free Spirit bike with banana seat and
psychedelic paint job at the Salvation Army for $10! I just took it
apart tonight so I can clean it, repaint it Ñ I'm thinking a red, white
& blue motif - and start riding it. Any hints on good web sites to
visit can be e-mailed to me at da...@fyi.net. Thanks!

How about the Schwinns that had the built-in headlight (two bulbs!) right
in front of the handlebars? Took two "D" batteries if I remember right;
got one of these with paper route money after a long and arduous saving-up
period.

Also had banana bike, did get a speedo/odo for it, the thing ran off a
little drive hook that wrapped around two opposing spokes down by the
front wheel hub. I also remember a headlight I got for it that ran off a
small worm drive generator shaped like a tiny Coke bottle. It attached to
a fork mount beside the front tire, and the serrated "cap" rested against
the sidewall. When you pedaled, it made juice. It would turn on a
half-cam out of the way for daytime operations. (Probably wouldn't now,
daytime running lights, you know....:-) I remember the light bulbs were
15 cents apiece at the Gambles store in town.

As I haven't kept up on the latest bike technology in the last decade or
so, this may not be something that ever went out of date.
