Jolie and I were privileged to be among the witnesses yesterday at the
marriage of our friends, Buddy and Dawna, and to represent this group,
along with the Rev. Dave Spiegel.
We arrived at Cyclone Stadium gathering spot just after 5, after a
long subway ride on the W train, and there they were, the happy
couple, with assorted family and friends, including Dawna's mom, and
Buddy's kids. The groom was looking handsome and the bride beautiful.
The gods were smiling, because after a stormy Saturday, the weather
was pleasant and somewhat sunny, perfect for a wedding.
Eventually, we all made our way to a fishing pier; more of Buddy's
extended family (cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., including the family
matriarch) and various sets of friends arrived. We sort of stood in a
circle as event unfolded. Someone brought a boom box, and it played
really nice doo-wop (Rockapella?). Finally, around 6:40, the official
ceremony occurred; a couple of very cute little flower girls made a
trail of rose petals. Buddy and his best man stood up at the front
with Rev. Dave facing them; Dawna and her maid of honor made their way
forward. Dave gave a really nice, celebratory service (with various
subtle references to such matters as uvulas and even monster (c**ks).
Even the people there who were fishing seemed to momentarily focus
their attentions away from their fishing poles and toward the bride
and groom.
Afterward, we made our way to Nathans and had a reception (with
sparkling cider toasts) there; I'm still savoring our chili dogs,
cheese fries, and chocolate dipped marshmallows on a stick. It was a
really nice capper to a truly excellent day, one of the finest
weddings I have ever witnessed. Plus, it was really fun to spend the
day at Coney Island; next time, we'll plan to go on the Cyclone and
maybe some other rides.
I wish you both the very best, Buddy and Dawna. Thanks for allowing us
to share your special day!
Tom
Once again, many congrats to the newlyweds!!!

Hope your NYC tour day went well. Did you ride the Ferry?
How cute Faith, Hope and Charity are, too. You must be very proud.

Dawna, you looked beautiful...especially in the pic of you holding the single
rose in the oval frame :)
Buddy, what a great looking family you have. It so nice that they could all be

Thanks to "everyone" for your good wishes. It all went so well, only
a few tiny glitches like the freezing wind that made Meaghan's and my
teeth chatter and my knees knock. She also dropped Buddy's ring and
was upset even though we retrieved it without having it fall through
the pier slats. I allowed a LARGE amount of dead air before I started
my special words to Buddy, not realizing I was supposed to go first.
And Buddy held an entire bouquet of flowers, looking as though he felt
funny doing so, instead of the one white rose he was supposed to hold
and give to me. But hell, you know, if that's all that went goofy, we
did well, huh?
Also, Dave had written such an eloquent ceremony for us that we feel
we have to share it with everyone, so here's a copy of them, minus our
own words for each other, because we have forgotten what we said! My
mom is the only one with a copy of the video, and she is having a
problem transferring it to VHS. Eventually, we'll have a copy.
Anyway, here's a copy of what Dave wrote for us:
Wedding Buddy and Dawna
In the midst of living our lives, sometimes big surprises pop up and
change our lives. Maybe it is fate, maybe it is God, maybe it is
karma. We are not always able to anticipate where these surprises
will come from or when they will happen, or even what they will be,
that is fun. Who would have thought that in the middle of long
distance discussions about uvulas and monsters, in the middle of
debates over sitcom characters and songs a relationship would develop
that was strong enough to bring us all to this place on this day. I
am constantly amazed at how the power of reminiscing about the pas can
have such an incredible impact on the future. We are all here now to
celebrate a special day in the relationship of this couple. Welcome
to the wedding of Buddy and Dawna.
Weddings are nothing new. They have been going on for a long time.
This, however, is a unique wedding, and this couple has a unique
relationship. This is not only because of how they met, even though
that is a great story! This couple is unique because all couples are.
All couples have a special flavor and a special way of doing things
that differentiate them from others. We are here today to celebrate
Buddy and Dawna and the journey that they have been on for some time
this is also a new journey, once filled with possibilities and one
which anticipates great things happening. Whether they be civil
ceremonies, or religious ceremonies, or whether they be elaborate or
simple weddings play in important role in our society. They are a
time of recognition of love and commitment that is shared by two
people, and they are also a time of celebration and fun. But a
wedding is only one day out of many. Today we all celebrate with you,
and from this day forward we keep you in our thoughts and prayers as a
way of supporting you in your lives together.
Buddy and Dawna as you have come here today in the presence of your
friends to celebrate your love for and your commitment to each other,
I am going to ask you some questions. Before you answer these
questions I want you to think hard about what you will say. Whereas,
your answers are just words, they are also the outward expressions of
your inner feelings. Please answer by saying I Do.
Buddy, do you take Dawna to be your lawfully wedded wife? To love,
honor, cherish, comfort, and support, through good times and difficult
ones, through hockey season as well as baseball season? Do you
promise to walk and work beside her and to always seek and encourage
the best in her in this life and beyond, always and forever? (Buddy
said Hell yeah!)
Dawna, do you take Buddy to be your lawfully wedded husband? To love,
honor, cherish, comfort, and support, through good times and difficult
ones, through baseball season as well as hockey season? Do you
promise to walk and work beside him and to always seek and encourage
the best in him in this life and beyond, always and forever? (Dawna
said I Do!)
What you have heard spoken here are important words, words that
express love and commitment. These are also words that can refresh
and strengthen each of us as we are privileged to hear them spoken.
Buddy and Dawna also have chosen to share some words of their own to
add special meaning to this day.
Words are powerful and they provide layers of meaning and integrity
to the moments of our lives. At this moment in their life, Buddy and
Dawna have chosen to share rings as a symbol of the love and
commitment that they share with each other.
The ring is an important symbol. It is made of precious metal,
which symbolizes the value that Buddy and Dawna have found in each
others lives. It is also a circle which symbolizes the never ending
love that they will share with each other. Exchanging rings though is
more than the giving and receiving of jewelry. It is yet another
symbol of the commitment that this couple shares with each another.
Dawna, as you give Buddy the ring, repeat after me: Buddy with this
ring and all of its meaning, I thee wed.
Buddy, as you give the ring to Dawna, repeat after me: Dawna, with
this ring, and all of its meaning, I thee wed.
Today, Buddy and Dawna, you have said I Do, you have spoken vows,
you have exchanged rings. Given that you have done all of these
things of your own free will and in the presence of these witnesses,
it is my privilege to pronounce you husband and wife. Now if the time
for you to kiss one another and to celebrate with your friends.

Dave, thanks so much once again for everything!
Larry
