Besides We've Only Just Begun (Carpenters) and I Love You Just the Way You
Are (Billy Joel), what were popular 1970s wedding songs?

How about "There is Love" (Peter, Paul and Mary ?) and "If" (Bread).

There is love... Is actually called 'The Wedding Song (there is love). I
played it at a couple weddings. I'm not sure who did it originally, but
the oldest version I could find listed was Bob Dylan in 1974.

Some other songs I remember being used as wedding songs.

Let it be me
Unchained Melody

"For All We Know" - The Carpenters

This was written by Jimmy Griffin {of Bread} who was a childhood
friend of my father-in-law.

Yep... those were definately wedding songs. But how about songs those
dorky wedding bands played at the reception? If I hear "Old Time Rock and
Roll" one more time, I'm going to buy a gun.

Oh no-- it's worse. Besides the song you mentioned, I've noticed a pattern:

1970's Wedding Song:
"Proud Mary" (originally by CCR, of course)

1980's Wedding Song:
"Celebrate" by Kool and the Gang

1990's Wedding Song:
"You Were Wonderful Tonight," by Eric Clapton
originally from "Backless," an album he put out
in the 1970's (1977?)

To make matters worse, it is cumulative; the old songs don't go away, the
new ones just get added to the repoirtoire.

When my friend Bob, whom I went to college with in the early and mid
'80's, got married in 1991, they played the last one as the "first dance."
What rankled me was that Bob was quite the punker in his old days. It was
a real let-down.

I have been at weddings where they played all three songs. I came close to
going to my car to get a tire iron.

Wonderful Tonight

Originally on his debut album "Eric Clapton' released in 1970. Then
rereleased on Backless, Slowhand, 461 ocean boulevard, Timepieces...
etc...

I think he liked that song a bit... ;)

The worst song I ever had to sing in a wedding was the "Theme From Ice
Castles". It sounded so awful with the church's pipe organ.... my cousin
asked me to sing it and I started laughing... thinking it was a joke.
But, she was dead serious. Yikes.

ROTFL! How about "Bad Bad Leroy Brown"? A requisite song for every wedding
reception! A tune about two guys in a barroom brawl over the one guy's
wife. Just what everyone wants to hear at their wedding reception.

I actually heard "Too Hot" at one reception--you know, by Ray Parker Jr.
and Raydio? A song about a couple of people who get divorced! I'm
surprised they didn't play "Jones vs. Jones" while they were at it!

TRUE! TRUE!

YES!

ROTFL! This was my sister's and brother-in-law's first dance at their
wedding in '91! I heard that Clapton actually wrote that one about how
irritating it is for a man to wait for a woman to get dressed because it
takes so long and she is so insecure that the man has to keep reassuring
her she looks great. Well, I'd say that sums up my sister and bro-in-law
pretty well :-) Actually, they should have danced to the first song they
ever danced to together: "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS.

Well, at my sister's they only played "Celebrate" and "Wonderful Tonight."
I guess that only means making a fist and waving it once in a while, not
getting a tire iron. Actually, my sister was furious because the DJ
company sent the wrong DJ and she played all kinds of songs my sister
hates. If she could have had it her way we probably would have been
listening to Depeche Mode all night.

If I can't have "Whip It" and "Rock Lobster" played at my wedding, I'm not
getting married EVER.

An older brother (he'd be HS class of '78 or so) of a good friend got married a
couple of years ago. They specically asked the DJ service for the Beatles
"When I'm Sixty-four" for the first song and low and behold, when the DJ was
setting up (not the boss but the college-aged employee) and the groom
double-checked with him about the first dance song, all he got in return was a
blank stare.

The DJ *didn't* even know the song!

I can forgive the DJ ... he's young, he'll learn. But what were his parents
thinking during his formative years!!

(Fortunately, three of us had Sgt. Pepper's on tape or CD in our cars).

Be thankful I didn't mention one of the most horrible/disgusting things we
had to endure at weddings when I was growing up. At Jewish weddings one
of the most popular songs was SUNRISE/SUNSET from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. It
gets very loud and teary eyed and makes you want to puke.

I personally had other songs in mind such as:
ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
KISS THE DAY GOODBYE
I'M GONNA WASH THAT BOY RIGHT OUTTA MY HAIR
and Billy Joel's SHE'S ALWAYS A WOMAN TO ME

The love of my life invited me to her 1985 wedding (she married the
sportscaster she'd left me for). Needless to say, I declined, though I
would have loved to have gone to the reception and requested the J. Geils
Band's 1980 (almost '70's!) classic, "Love Stinks."
