American to me is a guy working boats in the Port of Houston
bringin' in oil tankers and partyin' hard at a Z.Z. Top concert on his day
off. It's a guy chasing down storms in Alabama trying to make sure they get
some footage to use on the news and not letting bad weather cloud his view
of the strength of the people he sees. It's a woman in Colorado making a
living working at home on her computer and raising her pretty little
daughter as a single mom. It's a travel agent who does more traveling than
all of the people that she's ever booked settling down in Queens and making
dinner for 3 of her friends. It's a girl in Atlanta keeping up on her
retrotown group and being preoccupied keeping her group of friends together.
It's about a professor from N.J. spending time with his family on the Jersey
Shore. It's about a DJ who specializes in Rockin' Oldies sitting at his
computer and working at getting his music collection complete. It's about a
girl, her cousin, and her best friend in Boston who travel to meet friends
and are fiercely proud of the Red Sox. It's about a Tech in Tucson getting
calls from all over the south when people need help on their computers, and
still manages to talk to her boyfriend twice a day. It's about a guy in
Virginia offering free dance lessons to his friends. It's about a pretty hip
preacher who talks to his congregation about the '70s as well as his
creator. It's about a man whose father was an aide to a famous general of
the American army who later became a President of the United States. It's
about a fat guy who takes his son to opening day for a professional Brooklyn
baseball team and tells his son to carry on the tradition with his son after
he is gone. It's about an actress in Chicago trying to make it big while
waiting for Jeopardy to tape. It's about a model rocket enthusiast who
writes and draws comics trying to make it in that world.

It's about our "cousins" from Canada, across the divide. And a great big
wave across the line to you! A webmistress who puts together so many
unbelievable things for us from her heart. It's about a cookie makin' babe
who works the phones and provides a service to her people. It's about a dude
who works in Sam's selling CDs.

It's about a place where we can all get together and be ourselves. And share
with each other our friendships, hopes, dreams, lives aspirations and so
much more. Freely! Without fear that the government will Google us, hunt us
down or punish us for freely speaking our minds.
It's kinda like our NG, where we are free to be what we are.........friends.

Thank you ladies. And a day filled with love, peace, happiness, and freedom,
to you, your families, and our countrymen for the rest of time. But keep in
mind "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance." and "The tree of liberty
must from time to time be watered with the blood of martyrs, and tyrants."

I didn't want to steal Frank's thunder. But I've also been told (though
never heard) that Paul Robeson also did a definitive version of that song.

That was wonderful, Buddy!

Here's what I found fascinating on this fourth: I'm here at my grandparents'
independent living facility, and they had a woman in the lobby this afternoon
singing and playing piano (I'll do that sometime later this week <g>). At the
point we were passing through, she was going through a whole repertoire of
patriotic songs. I was walking at the speed of a slow snail alongside my
grandmother (using her walker) as another man was walking down the hallway
toward us with 2 crutches. From either end of the hall people were singing
along with the strains they heard floating through the air -- the song was
"America," and it just reminded me how patriotic that generation was compared
to the majority of us now. These people were all either in WWII, married to
someone who was, or related to someone who was. These songs are burned into
their collective memory, and it was so moving to witness. A few elderly
people, slowly making their way down a long hallway, managing to sing a
patriotic song on the day of independence. It was wonderful.
