Another class of 76'r. Oh yeah, those granny-square crocheted vests. It
was cool if you made your own. Or shell crocheted style.

My biggest fashion statement was bright red Charlie Brown shoes, with a
foam-type sole (platform, of course).

I (class of 1978) once dated a woman who wore platforms so high she
couldn't drive with them on. Wonder what ever happened to her?

Personally, I can't believe you'd admit to making such a statement. And
here I thought you PBS folks were soooo classy. My image of you is
shattered. ;^) So, how much is it worth to you for us all to keep it quiet?

I'm a little young to remember much of 79 fashion however, my sister was in
the class of 1975 and I remember how she used to embroider on her Levi flare
legged jeans. Was this an across the country thing or just a local fad?

Hmm...I have NO clue what we were thinking but I just got a catalog in the
mail that features _toe socks_. Big ick!! And they look just like they
did in the 70's...thick knit, and each toe a diff. color of the rainbow.

About those toe socks - Yes, they were rainbow. Each toe was a different
primary color! (WHY am I confessing this to the world!) <g>

Along that "crocheted" thread -- in 1973, on my birthday, my grandmother gave
me a crocheted floppy-brim hat which had, laced into it, sections of soda
cans. I was the only guy in my class with one, and I wore it proudly. Still
would if I had it.

I forgot all about it until I saw a biker wearing one back in the winter. His
had beer can sections in it, though.

Anyone else remember those?

Of course I don't know where you're posting from, but here in NYC it was a
big thing to embroider on all kinds of things. I did it on jeans, blue
work shirts, etc. Flowers, mushrooms, rainbows, even complete quotations
from songs (I embroidered a great Jim Croce quote on the back of a work
shirt :"Doesn't matter now who was wrong, the future is tomorrow, 'cause
the past is gone.")

If I'm not mistaken, those fashion statements were a product of the early
"recycling" movement. If you could re-use the cans, that was less garbage
to throw out. Whether that's the best way to re-use cans is subject to
personal interpretation, I suppose!

Oh, yeah! I remember they were always being sold at flea markets, along
with other beer/pop can crafts. Such as those lovely little airplanes that
people would hang off their camper awnings. ;-)

At my high school, the class of '78 had a poem:

Beer is fine
Sex is great
We're the class
Of '78.

This was modified from the class of '77 poem, which substituted "heaven"
for "great"...which means its essential lameness is not really our fault.

I think I had the ultimate in toe sock wear. I had a pair of pajamas with
toe socks sewed to the legs. Red White and Royal blue striped. What's even
worse is that someone took a picture of me in them. Of course my winged
bangs with frost in them and my braces on top of the beautiful pajamas was
sure a memory you'd never want to forget (or a bad dream).

Everything from Led Zeppelin to peace signs, etc. Writing on our hands was

I wore chucka boots (hushpuppy like boots also called shitkickers)
with short short culottes that had flaps on the front and back.
Usually had a top that had the balloon sleeves and the vest. (or in
the summer a man's no sleave t-shirt, or a tank top)

I wore a floppy hat sometimes, had peace sign on it. I got my ears
pierced in a "hippie crash pad" by a biker named red.

oops ...I am starting to sound sleezy...
