After responding to Tiny D's post RE: 3's Company. I just have to
express my feelings.
Does anyone care to nominate? Other choices maybe?
Like I always say - Bonus points for creativity!

Don Knotts would've been a great icon (delegate) if Andy Griffith was
aired in the seventies. Although he was on Three's Company, he didn't
make as big of an impact on the TV scene as he did in the sixties.
Plus, nobody, not even Knotts, could replace Mr. Roper (Norman Fell).
Having said that, I was about to nominate Mr. Roper for the newsgroup
delegate, until I rememered.......
either Greg Brady or David Cassidy.

Yep. That's the one. Farrah Fawcett *was* the seventies. I have no
problem with Farrah. Greg Brady and David Cassidy (my last post) don't
even come close. I like Farrah.

BOTH!!!!
Moulage???????? You're the one that helps use remember comedic genius
of Don Knotts every day. I'm one of the people that fights to keep
the sig and the Fife we love so much on the web site and NG.
Don Knotts was THE BEST landlord.
Only Don could pull off the wannabe swinger.
I figured I'd nominate Don because we've all been quite accustomed to
seeing the sig around here, and I'm sure that everyone thinks about the
funny times the've had growing up with him albeit 3's, Andy, or
Dumpling.
It just seems like perhaps we could all vote on and find some
unobtrusive characters and add personality to make a witty FAQ about
the group. You know, being a little creative? No rules. We can do it
together in open forum and ever changing.
Almost every NG has a FAQ.
"Everyone's doing it meee-aaann, C'mon meee-aaannn"
Don't be a bunch of Jive Turkeys, we can just make it an experiment.
I know I'm still a quasi newbie, it's just a suggestion.
Yeah !! Farrah's great >>> but what about Burt Reynolds ???
Gator !!! Bandit !!! That guy in Deliverance !!!
How about Farrah & Burt !
FK
Great thread, Nate. And if it counts for anything, we feel you've
earned your full-fledged member of the group button. :-)
<preannouncement clearing of the throat>
As far as being a 70s icon/group delegate, Burt Reynolds isn't even fit
to lick David Cassidy's boots. My reasoning? Burt shows up in our
conversations approximately once a month, whereas David shows up at
LEAST once a week. Besides, isn't Burt a little old? :-) For an old
fart, I would definitely vote for Don.
If we want to be true to our group's name, no, Don wasn't super big in
the 70s. If we want to be true to the group, he is HUGE here.
Larry's votes: Alan Alda, Hal Linden, Carol O'Connor, or Carol Burnett.
Or how about if we forget all those and just say Mary Tyler Moore?

Most impressive, young Skywalker. But how
many of your choices have aged as well as
Farrah?
Who wanted to grow up to be Alan Alda, Hal
Linden or Mary Tylor Moore? Who wanted to
sleep with Carol Burnett or (gag) Carol
O'Connor?
How big of a sexist pig do I have to make
of myself while trying to prove my point? <g>

I'm right with ya on this one Dawna!

Consider your point proved. So! We're back to Farrah and David,
right? I mean, ya gotta have one from each gender, or we'll offend
someone.
"Shoot, Andy, we cain't have that!!"
These aren't *my* personal choices, but......how about Donny and Marie?
That covers the male and female icons of the 70's. :)

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger'

I belong to an Andy Griffith Show list that kept mentioning the "moulage"
thing, and I had no idea what they meant. I finally saw that scene Labor Day
weekend during the TV Land marathon. It had to do with the footprints and the
missing cattle. Barney used the term "moulage" to describe the plaster that
was poured into a footprint to make a cast, forensics-style. Barney's stirring
up the plaster, fussing over what makes a "proper" moulage, and Andy says "I
like to put egg whites in mine. Make 'em all light and fluffy!" That, and
Barney's ticked off look, just had me rolling in the floor...

I did want to grow up and sleep with Mary Tyler Moore, but that was more of a
Laura Petrie thing than a Mary Richards thing. Still--not a bad choice at
all...
And okay, yes, there is a sexist part of me that will *always* be infatuated
with Farrah...
I like Don Knotts, mind you, but not as Furley. :-( And, as far as
Farrah....her behavior in the present has influenced me to not vote for her.
Sorry!!!!!!!!!

Farrah Fawcett and David Cassidy get my votes for group icons, they
both encapsulate the era so well.
BTW, I caught a brief shot of Farrah on the evening news, she's here in
Toronto for tonight's premiere of Robert Altman's "Dr. T and the Women".
I'm taping *all* of the press conferences so I don't miss anything (they run
for nearly an hour and can be very entertaining depending on the actors),
so if they do one for this flick I will report all Farrah activities to the group!
I'll also keep an eye out for any pictures online, you just know she'll get
some coverage.
BTW part 2, there's an interview and article on Farrah in this month's issue
of "Movieline" mag (Dylan McDermott cover). You're welcome to try the
website for pics, I couldn't get through on my creaky system:
Unofficial Farrah reporter over and out!

I have to admit, I see Olivia and John Travolta in the "Icons" role much
more than I do David C. and Farrah.
Jeff Troutman
This is one I would vote for! Each has many different references to the
70's. John Travolta covered TV, movies and music. Olivia Newton John
had many hits during the 70's and capped it off with acting . Wonderful
choices Jeff!

Then how about we consider ol' Reginald Kenneth Dwight? From 1970-79 he had 24
Top 40 Hits; with 16 of the 24 being in the Top 10, and 6 Number One smashes.
Plus his selections in the arena of wardrobe absolutely define the excess of
the 70s. How much more "Me Decade" can you get than Elton John?
Thank you. I aim to please. A lot of times I can't even see the target,
but I'm aiming nonetheless.

Bless ya, Shawn, I didn't want to be obvious! A couple of other points to
add to your lovely list:
The first album to debut at number 1 on the Billboard charts (Capt. Fantastic)
The first western performer to appear behind the Iron Curtain (Russia)
Personally, Elton in one of his flashy outfits from back then *is* the '70s to me.
But, I must admit that Jeff's choices of Olivia and Travolta fit *very* well.
Man, this is tougher than I thought it would be!
Cheers,

And root, toot, shoot myself to fame
Every kid alive gonna know my name
An overnight phenomenon like there's never been
A motivated supersonic king of the scene
from Elton John's "I'm Going To Be A Teenage Idol"
Now this is the first one I really feel I can weigh in on and vote for!
(Although I can't argue with the Elton John comments...) But ONJ and JT do
make a nice set for iconification. Between their collective movies and songs
I'd say they cover a great deal of the decade.
Liz
> I have to admit, I see Olivia and John Travolta in the "Icons" role much

As late as I am to this thread, it's shocking that someone else hadn't
mentioned John Travolta until now. What an impact this guy had on the
seventies! Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Urban Cowboy all dictated major
fad and style changes, didn't they? And Johnny T was right out front in all
those movies sockin' it to ya! He was also Barbarino and the original
Bubbleboy. When the decade ended, so did Travolta's career, for all intents
and purposes. Only recently has he started hitting it big again, and even
so his recent characters haven't had the same impact. I don't think people
rushed out trying to look like Vincent Vega.
Farrah, well, gee. I liked Loni Anderson more. But even so, I give Farrah
props for "icon" status. Those legs sold lots of posters to lots of teenage
boys, including me.
I also have to nominate Muhammad Ali, a personal hero and a "baaad man." He
spent most of the 70's floatin' and stingin', got that title back a couple
of times, and is still, IMHO, boxing's greatest superstar.
And if we're gonna go the Lorrie/Bobby route, I cast a vote for Nadia
Comaneci. I was riveted to the set during the 76 Olympics when she was on
it, and I fantasized a few gymnastics routines of my own while I watched.

:-)
Seriously, I'd have to agree. Elton it is. He was an icon in my life
from, it seems, when I was very young, all through the 70s, and beyond.
Larry: if we need a male and female to fit the bill, I'm going with
the Johns . . . Elton and Olivia Newton, that is.

Suuuure, Dave, it was her *legs" that sold that poster, huh? I seem to recall
