I'm looking through my American Annuals from the 70s. See if you can identify
the following prominent persons and their claim to fame.

Idi Amin Dada- dictator of Uganda, overthrown in 1979. Currently in exile in
Saudi Arabia,I believe.

Giulio Andretti- leader of The Red Brigade terroists?

Abraham Beame- Mayor of New York during its financial nadir, recently passed
away.

Carl Bernstein- Reporter from The Washington Post. He, along with Bob
Woodward, broke the "Watergate" story. Portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the
movie "All The President's Men".

William Peter Blatty- no idea.

Heinrich Boll- ditto.

Arthur Bremer- Former janitor who attempted to assassinate presidential
contender George Wallace(D-Ala.) in Laurel, Maryland., after apparently
stalking him for about a month The movie Taxi Driver is loosely based on his
exploits.

Bulent Ecevit- no idea.

Chou En-Lai- Chinese politician, Chairman Mao's right hand man. Is mentioned
in the Bily Joel song "We Didn't Start the Fire".

Steve Cauthen- Jockey, who rode Affirmed to the prestigious Triple Crown in
1978. Later moved to England.

John B. Connally- Former Texas governor, who was wounded in J.F.K.'s
assassination on November 22, 1963 in Dallas. I think he ran in the Democratic
primaries for president in 1976. Later switched to the Repulican Party, and
spent a bundloe of money in a futile attempt tobe the Repulican standard bearer
in the 1980 elections. Declared bankruptcy in the 1990's, is now deceased.

Archibald Cox- Watergate special prosecutor, fired in 1973 in the infamous
"Saturday Night Massacre".

Morarji Desai- no idea.

Thomas Eagleton- Former Democratic Senator from Missouri, who was picked by
Presidential nominee George McGovern(South Dakota) to be his Vice Presidential
nominee. A newspaper story leaked the information that Eagleton had undergone
electroshock treatment, a.k.a ECT, for depression as a college student, about
25 years earlier. He subsequently resigned his nomination, and was replaced by
Sargent Shriver.

John Ehrlichman- one of the "President's Men", who headed the Commitee to
Reelect the President(CREEP), found guilty of several Watergate related
offenses, serrved time in prison.

Harold S. Geneen- No idea.

Gerhard Gesell- No idea.

Joseph "Crazy Joe" Gallo- Mobster, IIRC he was shot at a New York City
restaraunt, and landed face first in a plate of spaghetti.

Gary Gilmore- Convicted murderer. Executed by firing squad in Utah in 1977,
the first use of capital punishment in the US since 1967, A book and made for
televison movie "The Executioner's Song" were about him.

Valery Giscard D'Estaing- The Prsident of France form 1974-981.

Clifford Irving- sounds familiar, a novelist?

Howard Jarvis- Designer of the Jarvis heart.

Jim Jones- cult leader, relocated, with his follwers, to the jungles of Guyana.
In 1978, he and about(a little under) 1000 followers committed suicide, most
by drinking cyanide laced Kool-Aid.

Billie Jean King- Women's tennis player. Beat an ancient Bobby Riggs in a "A
Battl of the Sexes" match from the Houston Astrodome in 1973 or 74.

Guy LaFleur- Montreal Canadien Right Wing(position, not political view) Hall
of Famer. Help propelled the Canadiens to four straight Stanley Cup titles
from 1976 to 1979. The 1976-77 tram, with a recoed of 60 wins 8 losses and 12
ties (132 points) is regarded by many hockey historians as one of the three
best teams of all time. A couple of years ago he appeared in a Molson's Golden
commercial with the Mackenzie brothers (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas).

George Meany- labor leader, head of the AFL-CIO

Robert Pirsig- Don't know.

Elliot Richardson- Attorney general during the Nixon Administration. Resigned
in 1973 after refusing to fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox.

Leo Ryan- Democratic Cogressmen from California. Went to Guyana on a fact
finding mission follwing complaints from several of his constituents about
treatment of their family members by Jom Jones and his(Jnes) People's Temple
members. The People's Temple had been based in San francisco before relocating
to Guyana. Was killed by People's Temple members as he boarded a plane back to
America.

the Chinese keep changing the spelling of their names i.e. Peiping,
Peishing, Peking Bei-Jing)

A Jockey, I believe that the horse he was riding won the Kentucky
Derby-Secretariat?

> John B. Connally

Former Governor of Texas who was in the same car as, and wounded during the
C.I.A./Mafia Execution of President John F. Kennedy. For years after the
execution always maintained that there was a plot and that he did not
believe the government's story (as did L.B.J.), later in what some people
said was a pay-off he was appointed to the President's cabinet and just
prior to appointment was saying that he'd rethought the whole thing and
believed he was mistaken.

> Archibald Cox

Special Prosecutor in Watergate case. Appointed after the Saturday Night
Massacre when the first special prosecutor was fired for investigating
Richard Nixon's complicity TOO aggresively.

> Morarji Desai

Richard Nixon's Chief of Staff (or was that hHaldeman?)

> Harold S. Geneen

Who?

> Gerhard Gesell

> Joseph "Crazy Joe" Gallo

Joey Gallo, subject of a song written by Bob Dylan from President Street in
Brooklyn N.Y. A mobster/ soldier in the Bonanno/ Genovese (I think) family
from the Red Hook /Park Slope
areas. Joey for awhile was the darling of New York's literati until he
finally shot inside of Umberto's Clam House on the corner of Mulberry &
Hester street in front of his family. True to who he was he chased the
killer outside finally being shot some more and dying outside. He was famous
among mobwatchers for making inter-racial alliances inside the joint and
being an equal opportunity emploer on the outside thereby making a lot of
enemies inside the all sicilian (racist) "mustache pete" or old world Mafia.
He and his brothers claimed to have been the "barbershop quartet" that
whacked Albert Anastasia. Wait a minut I just broke the Law of Omerta, dont
shoot!

> Gary Gilmore

Was small time killer and murderer in Utah where he shot a gas station
attendant in the back of the head. When he was found guilty, and sentenced
to death there were automatic appeals. He sued to be allowed to be executed
at the earliest possible moment. (Which I thought was a brilliant legal
strategy: He sues to be executed ergo he must be crazy, ergo he's unfit to
be executed, ergo he gets life in prison. BUT, he was sincere.) He was
eventually executed and his eyes were donated to the Eye Bank. They made his
story into a movie.

> Valery Giscard D'Estaing

Past President of France.

> Clifford Irving

Scam artist who offered up Hitler's Diary for sale, and was involved in an
autobiography of Howard Hughes. Both were frauds.

> Howard Jarvis

Wasn't he an actor on Mary Hartman Mary Hartman?

> Jim Jones

Charismatic leader of the People's Temple, a very racially diverse church
based in the teaching that Jesus would have been a socialist. He was the
leader of this cult which set up a large paranoid "farm" in Guyana that was
supposed to be a collective politico-religious means of supporting
themselves and their religion. When reports filtered back to the states that
they were forced to give up their passorts, and abused, Ca. Representative
Leo Ryan went to do a fact finding mission. When he was about to leave his
plane was ambushed by a security team from the People's Temple and killed by
high powered rifle along with the rest of his group. The security team upon
return to the farm, under orders from Jim Jones prepared grape Kool Aid
laced with cyanide. It was then given, as some doomsday device to the
workers/ parishioners. Those who wouldn't drink the poison voluntarily were
forced at gunpoint. It was given even to infants. The news showed shocking
pictures of over 400 poisoned corpses dotting the land scape around the mess
hall.

> Billie Jean King

Whooped ass in tennis in the early '70s before coming out of the closet.

> Ken Stabler

Somebody I dont know.

> Nguyen Van Thieu

Former President of the Republic Of South Viet Nam.

> Robert Edward Turner

Ted's father?

> Cicely Tyson

The young (at the time) black actress who played the starring pole in The
Autobigraphy of Miss Jane Pittman. This part required her to age 80
years(?). An AMAZING job was done on her make-up. She was also in the
original Broadway Cast of HAIR.

> Steven Weed

Patty Hearst's live-in boyfriend, pot connection, ane a teacher in her
college on the night she was captured by the Symbionese Liberation Army.
They beat up Steve Weed and took Patty hostage until Cinque (Donald David
DeFreeze) and her soon to be lover/rapist/tormentor Willie Wolf "brainwashed
her into becoming Sister Tania and participating in bankrobberies.
Interesting note: when DeFreeze's body was returned for family burial after
the massive shhotout and fire that purportedly wiped out the S.L.A.. it was
returned with the head and hands removed. This further fueled speculation
that that Cinque was an agent provocateur, let out of prison to form this
group, so that the Bay Area's radical community could be totally
discredited. There had ben many such suggestions previously but the return
of "a body" in that condition, with only the goverment's word for it's
identity made many people believe that he was secretly in hiding being kept
safe by the government after a job well done. There was really a lot going
on in that case that you younger guys dont know about.

I'm going to be a good girl here and not peek at anyone else's answers
nor touch the net (which narrows down my answers considerably!). Here's
what I think for the few I recall:

>Idi Amin Dada

Big fat bad guy dictator, I'm drawing a blank for his country, somewhere
in Africa, right?

>Giulio Andretti

Any relation to the racing Andrettis?

>Abraham Beame

Discovered whiskey, Jim's brother? ;-)

>Carl Bernstein

Music guy, I think he conducted for a while, no clue what orchestra.

>William Peter Blatty

Author of "The Exorcist".

>John B. Connally

Politician?

>John Ehrlichman

Watergate dude?

>Gary Gilmore

Murderer, wasn't he the one "In Cold Blood" was about?

>Clifford Irving

Author of the fake Howard Hughes diary, right?

>Jim Jones

That freak reverend that caused all those awful Kool-Aid suicides in
Jonestown.

>Billie Jean King

Famous tennis player and half of the infamous Battle of the Sexes game
with Bobby Riggs. Bonus trivia: Elton and Bernie wrote the song "Philadelphia
Freedom" for her team of the same name.

>Guy LaFleur

Hockey dude, you'll have to talk to a more hockey-obsessed Canuck than
I for his famous stats and stuff, I can't help but think of his hair-loss ads! Wait,
was that him or Bobby you-know-who? Sorry, Sandy, don't mean to besmirch
the holy one's name! ;-)

>George Meany

Ringing a vague bell, politics?

>Leo Ryan

Ooo, right on the tip of my mind, a hostage and (possible) murder victim?

>Mark Spitz

Swimmer with the big bushy 'stache that won 7 gold medals at the Olympics
(can't recall which year) and set 7 world records as well.

>Cicely Tyson

Famous actress (related to Whitney Houston?), she had a huge 70s hit with
that movie about Jane Pitman the title of which escapes me.

>Steven Weed

I don't know but, with a name like that, I like him already! ;-)

Wow, that's pretty crappy. See what happens when I'm left to my own devices?

Actually the other Watergate guy, who the hell was I thinking of?! Oh, wait,
bet ya it was *Leonard" Bernstein, right? D'oh! It's been a long day!

Apears to be "The Executioner's Song", who *was* the other one written about?

In Cold Blood was a book by Truman Capote. It was about a Kansas farm family
that was brutally murdered by some escapees in the mid 50's. There is even a
movie on it. I don't know if it's any good tho cos I've never seen it, but
really do want to.

I'm no hockey guru, but I believe he was one of the last to succumb to a wearing helmet,
before it was made mandatory. I remember him because his hair used to fly out behind him
so nicely ;) I'm sooo sports aware, eh?

And so the word went out from Jamie <mcer...@sympatico.ca>:

Atta girl, Jamie, good to know I'm not the only Canuck that knows diddly and
squat about hockey! Hmmm, hair flying behind him, huh? Maybe he wasn't
in one of those hairloss ads after all! :-) Now that I think about it, Guy's been
pretty low-key, hasn't he? He did a guest spot on the late, great "Power Play",
if I recall correctly, but you don't see him out and about (or aboot!) too often.

I stole this from a hockey card
I keep tucked up under

I worked it in
I worked it in to look like that

Haven't seen him in years... but you are right about the hairloss ads... it was a
personal tragedy for him. I think when he lost the hair, he finally put on the helmet.

The Hip singing about hockey! How appropriate!
