>> Worst concert you went to - The Cars in 1979
Hi Kelly! I never saw The Cars and always wanted to - was wondering what
their concert was like? Sounds like it was a disappointment!
Last concert you went to -
Pink Floyd, Cleveland Stadium, Ohio 1988
Next concert you plan to go to - N/A
Loudest concert you went to -
Rush, Grace Under Pressure Tour, Cleveland Coliseum
Worst concert you went to -
REO Speedwagon & Cheap Trick, Blossom, Cleveland
Best concert you went to -
Yes, 90125 Tour, Blossom, Cleveland & Savage Hall, Toledo
Band or artist you have seen most in concert - Yes
SPECIAL AWARD - Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble and
The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Stevie's brother Jimmy) at Blossom
Music Center, Cleveland. 2nd row seats. Incredible show.
HONORABLE MENTION - Ray Charles at Hoover Auditorium
in LakeSide, Ohio. A 3000 seat venue in July. All the doors were
open to let the air flow through, and you could see people sitting on
the porches of their 100+ year old houses in rocking chairs, listening
to the sweet sounds of Ray & the Raylettes. 3rd row. Pure magic.

Andy Gibb was my heartthrob, and my first concert. It was a pure joy! Even
if he would have stood there and threw rocks at the crowd I would have been
happy.
There is nothing like Billy Joel playing for his hometown audience back in
the late 70's . I was able to attend two of his "Charity Begins at Home"
concerts back then, his 52nd Street and Glass Houses tours.

band songs like "Born in the U.S.A."
Cool.
Trivia: "Born In The U.S.A." is said to have been written and demoed around
the time of _Nebraska_, and was meant to be included on that LP.

Billy Joel completely surprised me when I saw him in concert circa 'The
Stranger' --or '52nd St,' or one of those big early albums) tour.
You knew Billy had the tunes and great piano playing, but Live
everything got taken up several notches. Liberty DeVito's powerful
drumming drove that band like a locomotive. Everyone else in the band
was exceptional including a sax guy who played fairly big part in the
live show.
And Billy was making his name a Great Live Entertainer...for any who
didn't already know this back then (including me) -this was a fantastic
surprise. He had on the sport coat and jeans, skinny tie and tennis
shoes. He was all over the stage and was about as good in concert as
anyone at his peak.
I'd recently been to a Bruce Springsteen ("The River" tour, IIRC)
concert and Bruce was so good it was almost a religious experience.
When Springsteen was really going for it -1975-85, well a couple of
those shows are in my top 5 Best Concert experiences. Never a big fan
of his albums, tho a couple of individual songs like 'Born To
Run,' 'Racing In the Streets" are alltime faves-Bruce Springsteen's
70s/80s live shows raised the bar for just how great a rock concert can
be (imo).
Thus I was pleasantly surprised when Billy Joel was 'almost' as good (a
big Billy Joel fan might say 'better'-certainly a great instrumentalist
and a great 'hit' songwriter) during his peak years. Billy (like Bruce)
is older now, and Still Good.
As a bonus, Billy Joel had a bunch of familiar radio hits by that time-
and would continue scoring chart hit singles for 15 years.
Bruce really only had one album that radio really pulled a lot of
singles from -'Born In The USA'- which would come out (and get
overplayed) a few years later. But I had discovered that with Bruce, it
didn't matter if you knew the songs well when you went to see him. He
is one of the great live rockers of alltime.
When I saw Bruce in 1977 in a local college's basketball gym, I had
only barely heard the single 'Born to Run'-the case with most of the
5000 interested folks who crammed in to see What All The Fuss Was About
with this New Jersey bar band dude who reportedly did 3+ hour concerts
(he did, does) and had recently made the covers of both Time and
Newsweek...with a major editor of Rolling Stone calling him 'the future
of Rock and Roll' and then quitting his big time editing job to manage
and co-produce Bruce. Good move.
I saw the Cars in about 1984 headlining a then-annual outdoor festival
in the mountains near here. Huey Lewis was breaking out nationally and
was second on the big bill. Huey totally kicked tail in those days. A
bunch of hits and a great (again) high energy live show.
I'd seen Huey when his very first album came out (Huey and the News are
all from nearby Marin County and played around a lot locally as they
built their career). He was great 5 years earlier, Excellent frontman,
really working the crowd. When Huey and the News played before the
Cars...well it would have been a challenge for anyone to follow them.
They were almost as popular as they would ever get (which was darn big
for a few years in the 80s), they did what they did -straight ahead
radio friendly rock- Very Well. They were hot. Bruce and Billy coulda
done it well-all 3 artists were similar -believe it or not, as their
music is all different- in their approach to doing a great rock concert.
The Cars had a bunch of big songs by then, their last big album-
Heartbeat City was generating some hit singles and they were still
riding their peak. I've heard other concert stories of people enjoying
them in concert...and I Did enjoy them headlining that day-as I liked a
lot of their music.
But as entertainers, the Cars just stood there and played and sang.
Maybe if they hadn't followed Huey it would have been a little
different. I had seen Jackson Browne headline the same festival years
earlier, and he basically just 'plays and sings,' sorta like the Eagles
do, and everyone sorta knows that-and the generally non-rock and roll
songs are great, the band is great, David Lindley used to light up the
music with blazing lap steel/slide solos...and Jackson is great, in his
own singer-songwriter way.
Jackson Browne does get intimate with his audiences, talking to you a
lot. The Cars were very distant, I don't think they said more
than 'thank you' a couple of times.
Also, the Cars had had some huge rock hits and album tracks. Their
stuff was all over the radio back then -still gets a lot of airplay as
they made great records that stand the test of time.
But the Cars didn't seem to tour too much. So people didn't know what
to expect-actually we were probably expecting a high-energy live show
equal to the sound (and success) of their recordings.
Well, they Sounded fine. But they didn't move or 'rock' much. The were
the Roy Orbisons of the 80s:) Great popular songs- well played and
sung, sunglasses and almost no movement.
I remember Rick Ocasek (and most of the band) smiling, but that was
about it. I did enjoy seeing them play their hits, and as a guitarist I
am always interested in watching good to great guitarists -which Elliot
Easton is. But it was just well played hit music, no real 'show.'
Most people stayed for their whole set, as they were very big at the
time and they did have a Lot of big tunes. But I have to say that the
young and hungry Huey Lewis blew them off the stage.
The next year (turned out to be their final tour) my girlfriend gave me
tix for us to go see the Cars at a big local arena on my birthday. We
drove up there (to San Francisco). It was sold out. And in those
(seems like fairly pre-scalper) times, some fans were outside clamoring
for tickets. It wasn't a 'must see' show for me, just something to do
on my birthday.
So when a couple of kids yelled that they'd pay $60 for 2 good seats
(the tix probably cost $18-20 each) -we just sold them and went into SF
and had dinner. I never would have done that with Bruce, Billy or Huey
tix in 1985.

One of the most thrilling moments ever for me at any concert was the very
beginning of a 1984 Billy Joel concert. The split second the stage lights
went, there he was, banging out the piano overture to "Angry Young Man." It
took my breath away.

Yes, definitely! I hope you get to attend their final concert in New York. That

>>First concert you went to - aside from the Perry Como concert I saw with my
mom in 1979 (opening act: Jay Leno), I'd have to guess it was Little River Band
in the summer of 1983 at the Ravinia Festival. My first arena concert was my
first date with my high school sweetheart, Billy Joel's "Innocent Man" tour at
the Rosemont Horizon, March 1984.
>>Last concert you went to - I think it was Billy Joel about a year or so ago;
one of the last shows before they renamed the Rosemont Horizon into the <gag>
Allstate Arena.
>>Next concert you plan to go to - Hoping to get to Billy Joel/Elton John if
they come through Chicago (believe it or not they DIDN'T come here last time;
I think the closest they got was just outside Milwaukee)
>>Loudest concert you went to - Billy Joel as the first performer in the new
United Center (where the Bulls play). They did a horrible job with the sound
system. The sound was loud as well as muffled. So not only was it the
loudest, but it also answers the next question...
>>Worst concert you went to - See above.
>>Best concert you went to - Double bill of Sting and Don Henley, must have
been about 1990 or 1991, Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. There were two opening acts
(Vinx and Susannah Hoffs), and everyone had their own set, so the evening
lasted about 6+ hours! Pretty amazing.
>>Band or artist you have seen most in concert - You probably all figured it
out by now.... yes, it was my idol, Billy Joel. :-) There just really aren't
too many other people I'm willing to pay to get to see. And Dixon, I agree,
there are few things more exciting than watching him prep for and dive into
"Angry Young Man." I think of him every time I play it myself on the piano -
so inspiring!

Firefall was the opener.

The reunited Van Halen.

Probably Nazareth in 1981. The first notes hit on the bass nearly blew
me off my feet (it was like Michael J. Fox striking that guitar chord
in "Back To The Future"). The soundman did turn it down a bit shortly
after the first song.
>Worst concert you went to -
If I had to pick, it would be ZZ Top. Not because they were bad, but
because they only played for only a little over an hour (they were the
headliners, too). It was good musically, though.
(If opening acts are eligible as worst, I could go on all day).

Paul McCartney.

Y'know, it's weird. I don't live in a HUGE city (not by any stretch)...it's

Zeppelin...Billy Joel- in their prime, as far as performance (each of
these artists has their own style of music..I'm just talking about
powerful concerts).
I always said seeing Bruce fronting that band was like seeing Pete
Townshend, Mick Jagger, James Brown, Bono- fill in your own excellent
showman here-...all rolled into one. He stole everyone's best moves
(cept Bono's-Bono probably took lessons from Bruce:) -and added a whole
bunch of his own, and was Killer with a capital 'K.'
I know they filmed some of that late 70s/early 80s Springsteen/E Street
stuff coz there's a clip of them doing 'Rosalita' that's been on the
video channels, and part of it is on one of his video collections.
There's also his 2 song (I think) performance in the 'No Nukes' concert
film.
Bruce is still active and does a great show, but no way can he compete
with his younger self. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull-another master
showman- has somewhat humorously lamented that he now has to try to
live up to the legendary very physical performances he did 25-30 years
ago.
I hope someday Bruce sees his way clear to release some of that great
performance film footage, circa late 70s. It's stuff that should be
seen. You can pick up a lot of prime Who, Tull, Stones, U-2
etc..there's even a 1990 Billy Joel concert vid which just came out
that's fine. Bruce oughta release some of the archive stuff..

Yeah, Billy did that to me as well. You know you're in for a great
show when your jaw drops in the first 20 seconds, and it's just
powerful performance, no smoke bombs or gimmicks:)
First concert you went to - Led Zeppelin, Winterland SF, First US Tour
1969. Fantastic. They were young, fresh and hungry-still making their
name playing a 5000 seat ballroom. It was a life changer. I decided
that night that I wanted to play in a band professionally-which I
eventually managed to do for about 17 years.
Last concert you went to - Steely Dan, and I have to mention the recent
Dixie Chicks concert-(both great).
Next concert you plan to go to - U-2
Loudest concert you went to - Led Zeppelin, Berkeley, CA 1971.
Worst concert you went to - Pass. There's usually something good at
every show, though I went to the a Scorpions concert in the late 80s
based on a rave review from a friend, and was underwhelmed. Not their
fault, I'd been ill-advised. The crowd had a ball.
Best concert you went to - Too many "Bests" to list, all for different
reasons. I have a sorta Top 10 in no particular order.
Band or artist you have seen most in concert - Geez, I dunno. I only
missed Bruce Springsteen on tour once between 1976-92. Saw most of the
Billy Joel, Rolling Stones tours from the 70s till now. All the U2
tours from 83 on. All the Gloria Estefan/MMSM tours from 87-now. All
Paul McCartney solo tours from 76 on (4?..'76 was the best). All Pink
Floyd... Most of the Zeppelin shows, even after they got so big it
didn't matter if they were high or sloppy...
Probably the artist I've seen most often is a blues/jazz guitarist like
Larry Carlton or Robben Ford -who come through the area at least once a
year and I've probably seen 25+ times...
>Last concert you went to -Kiss 1st Reunion Tour, what was it, 1997?
>Next concert you plan to go to - ??
>Loudest concert you went to -Ramones. Sound was cranked *so* loud, it was
distorted. And uncomfortable, even with earplugs.
>Worst concert you went to - Whitney Houston. Snore.
>Best concert you went to - Queen. 1980. Paid an evil scalper for front row
tickets, but it was worth it!!
>Band or artist you have seen most in concert -Queen 11 times, Kiss probably
more, since they toured more, and I saw them on every tour except a few of
those late 80s ones.
Honorable Mention: Sparks, for a great and amusing show, and Devo for a very
entertaining and unusual show.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that this was the concert that I got B.B. King
to autograph my woman's copy of his autobiography (that made me THE MAN) and
I got my Playbill poster for that night autographed, also. The poster is
hangin' in my hallway in a frame, with the ticket stub, and the Lucille Pin
he gave me. Along with a picture of Bobby "Blue" Bland that I took.
>>First concert you went to -David Cassidy 72
I saw David Cassidy about that same time (old Municipal Auditorium in
Atlanta - now part of GSU). I had a HUGE crush on him and the concert was a
big thrill at the time :-)

Other than Elton, for obvious personal reasons, Billy Joel is THE best
entertainer I've seen in concert, he really knocked himself out! I'll stick
up for the incredible "Angry Young Man" as well and I've never been as
moved as I was when I saw him do "Goodnight Saigon" in concert. That
helicopter was coming down from the rafters, I just knew it, amazing! He
did about 3 hours on his own including 3 encores, we just wouldn't let him
leave the stage! Saw him on the TV show "Actors Studio" not that long ago
and, man, he's still an amazing guy to watch. Mostly an interview but he'd
sit at the piano a few times to show why a certain song "worked" and his
fingers just flew. He's still got it in spades.

Preaching to the choir here, TD. I have many 'favorite artists' and
Billy is easily one of them.
The "Inside The Actor's Studio" TV show with Billy is great.
While not an actor, Billy proved to be an excellent choice for that
fine program. The moderator went a bit against form-inviting one of the
great popular musicians of our time-onto what is a prestigious 'actors
only' interview/workshop show.
On the program, Billy is very open and honest -as usual. He's also
frequently very funny and offers some fantastic insights about his
compositional style(s)- how certain songs came about etc. Lots of
incidental playing....showing sometimes intentionally funny things
about his music and pop music in general- and very
interesting/enlightening things about some of his popular -or
maybe 'strong statement' tunes.. And of course lots of anecdotes about
all phases of his career.
I really enjoyed it when, as the show went on, he kept running over to
the piano more and more to illustrate a point. It was like having him
over to your house to talk music.
It's a must-see (if you can get the Bravo Channel) for Billy Joel fans,
or anyone interested in listening to a great performer/songwriter talk
about his career and-really the goldmine here- His Songcraft.

I saw that Actor's Studio episode too and it made me LOVE him all the more.
He's so funny and down to earth and the talent just leaves me weak. I got GH

them over and over again and never tire of him.

I remember hearing about his comments a few years after I'd seen him and I
was so disappointed! Seems he *really* hated being a Partridge and the
whole teen idol thing :-(
Loudest Concert: Boston, May 1995--great concert, but the Nuclear
Testing Ground was calling asking them to keep it down.
Last Concert I Saw: Travis Tritt, August 2000.
Worst Concert: Sorry, TD, but it was Elton back in August 1984 on his
"Breaking Hearts" tour. I really like Elton, but he just didnt seem to
be having fun entertaining at this concert. Wonder if this was one of
his periods when he was dealing with deep personal issues?? He just
kind of routinely played his songs and didnt really even talk to the
audience. I would really like to see him again though, cuz I know he's
an awesome performer!
Best Concert: So many tie for first, its impossible to name one: Billy
Joel in 1984 & 1986...both times we had tickets within the first 5 rows!
He performed his ass off for the crowd. Leaping up on the speakers,
running around the stage, etc. Incredible.
Olivia Newton-John during her Physical tour in September 1982. She just
blew the audience away, singing, dancing, costume changes, doing
aerobics. It just happened to be her 34th birthday the night of this
concert. They wheeled out a huge birthday cake and the whole audience
of 30,000 sang Happy Birthday. Pretty unforgettable. She seemed
genuinely surprised.
Tina Turner, September 1985. Unbelievable show, with an incredible
reception from the audience. I dont think Ive ever witnessed so much
love in an audience for a performer as there was for her that night.
John Mellancamp--February 1986. I think you almost have to be in a
certain mood for his show. But, afterwards, I wanted to quit my office
job and just go out on the road playing guitar drinking beer in small
bars. :)
Honorable Mentions: Pat Benatar, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton on his 1987
tour with Phil Collins playing drums!
Band or Artist seen the most: Olivia. 5 times!
Next Concert: Olivia, September 2001...just scored some tickets
yesterday. She'll be in Wisconsin (next state over) and we're in Row 7.

Fyi- Bruce put out a late 80s/ early 90s CD single of some live stuff
from his last tour with the E Street band before the big break. I don't
recall what the title track/chart single was, but it had some acoustic
songs as the other tracks, such as Dylan's Chimes of Freedom.
At that point in his career he was playing Born To Run
solo/acoustically, and that version is on the single. Great version of
a strong song. The rock studio version is one of my alltime favorite
records, but it's great to hear the strength in the song with just
Bruce and an acoustic guitar- and those 4 or 5 simple chords..
I've seen the CD out in used bins, not very expensive-least it didn't
used to be.
Never bought it, as he did a live 4th of July concert during that tour
year which was carried on a lot of FM stations around the country-
(guess he knew he was going to be making some Major career changes,
disbanding the group, etc) so I got that stuff straight off the air.

Hmm ... must have just been a bad night, Tritt, I caught the same tour
here in Toronto and he did a great job. He got married that year, though,
and we all know he didn't really *want* to get married at the time so maybe
he did have some personal stuff going on.

Both bands are still out there doing club tours. Wishbone made decent
melodic guitar rock (their Argus LP being their pinnacle) and BOA were,
well, a mess, IMO. But charming in a pretty crude way.
Jeff Troutman
Jim Dandy was one of the first guys to get out there with a minimal
voice and simple loud songs, but totally over the top on 'show'. The
crowd (Beck fans there to see a great guitarist) responded well. Many
or the young ladies who had been dragged to see the hot guitarist Beck
by their wannabe boyfriends (and I say this from...uh...personal
experience:) enjoyed the basic rock and ragged vocals of the
entertaining BOA.
I later thought guys like David Lee Roth (though he was working in a
great legendary band/Van Halen) and especially Vince Neil/Motley Crue
(which did their own version of stupid loud tunes) worked the "dyed-
blond haired lead singer with limited range but big show" deal pretty
well.
They had improved on the BOA/frontman formula and MC was a better (if
very simple) band than BOA. Of course, Van Halen/w Roth kinda defined
80s hard rock (beginning in 1978:). By comparison, BOA could barely
play, but there were a lot of early loud bands who couldn't play or
write very well. Check out the first several albums by Grand Funk
Rai...nevermind:) GFR did a pretty good live show even before their
material..improved, such as it did.
Roth and Neil (and some others) came along years later and standards
had generally risen for all bands, even the simple bands. Sound and
lights were/are Much Better.
I was young and dumb -in my own way- at the BOA concert and
didn't 'get' why such basic music and limited (poor)
musicianship/vocals were getting over with the crowd. BOA knew what
they could do, and what they couldn't -and Sold the Hell out of what
they did.
Years later I actually found myself at a Motley Crew concert. I was on
vacation and it was the only rock concert in that town that week -so I
just said, hell with it..and went. I checked my 'musical taste' at the
door going in and had a great time..along with everyone else in the
place. Actually that was one of the most (stupid) Fun -and loudest-
concerts I've been to. The audience went totally crazy and there were
tons of motivated young ladies who kept things even more interesting.
Motley (like BOA) never bit off more than they could chew, and did a
good job on their simple big guitar loud songs. I only knew one song,
but it didn't matter. They had the place jumping bigtime and 'the
little girls understood.' Also the slightly older 'little girls':) Big
Fun. It was 'Good Show' and a great party.
It was rock and roll.

First concert you went to - Wilson Picket 1969
Last concert you went to - Bruce Springsteen 2000
Next concert you plan to go to - ???
Loudest concert you went to - Grateful Dead - Boston Garden 3/31/73
(with the NRPS) - I was front and center in the 13th row...
Worst concert you went to - Grateful Dead - McNichols Arena, Denver,
1976 or so. The boys were flat that night.
Best concert you went to - It's either the prevously mentioned
Dead concert at the old Boston Garden or a Bruce Springsteen concert
I saw in a college auditorium in 1974. Both changed me forever.
That night at the old Boston Garden, the Dead played all my
favorite songs, sounded great and rocked until 3:30 in the morning.
The first time I saw Bruce Springsteen was in a 1,000 seat theater.
I had never heard of him except in reviews in "Rolling Stone" that
seemed too good to be true. That concert blew me away. It was a
whole new kind of music, my music, he was singing about my life.
Band or artist you have seen most in concert- For some reason, I'm
a little embarrassed to admit that I've seen the Dead 42 times.
