IMHO, disco never went away. It's just been called different things.
"new music", "hip-hop", "dance", "techno", "rave".

: For the record, I play drums in a local discotheque's disco band. We play
: every Thursday night and people just love it...from our opening number
: "Disco Inferno" to the closing one, a 10-minute version of "Copacabana" :)
: 2-1/2 hours of the most exciting music ever written!
: Ok, now that I got that off my chest, go on, flame if you must.
Live disco performances in the '70s were pretty bad. I saw live shows
from Donna Summer, and also The Trammps. Seeing these superstars
in person was a big disappointment.
OTOH, many a Sunday night was enhanced by the appearance of disco
mega-stars at the local bar. Evelyn "Champagne" King, Vicki Sue
Robinson, and many others. They would show up (always on Sunday night,
always around midnight) with nothing more than a tape for backup.
The tape was a special mix of everything except them. This allowed
them to duplicate their sound perfectly, while truly performing their
part "live".
There were no sampled sounds or midi in the late '70s-early '80s.
This was good in that all records (good, bad, and *very* bad)
contained original sounds. It was bad in that very few artists
could reproduce the "studio" sound.

OH YUCK!!!! I beg to differ, but "hip-hop" and "techno" and all that stuff
could hardly be called Disco. There's always been dance music but disco
is just......uhhh.....disco. It's different. It's too early in the
morning for me to try to explain it.

I second that! Dance music/remixes of today suck really
bad, ESPECIALLY when they remix a good song into a long techno
version. This stuff is almost impossible to dance to, or at least,
it is impossible to dance to it and have fun at the same time.
