I'm zoning on his real name right now. His prior band was the 101ers, and
legend has it he dumped them right after hearing the Sex Pistols for the
first time.

Philly, I think. She died in the Chelsea.

Richard Meyers. He was in Television, but it's hard for me to see them as

Voidoids.

They both worked in Andy Warhol films, I believe. I think Candy's last name
was Darling.

Country, Blue Grass, & Blues. All I know about it's location is that's it
in the Bowery in New York.

I know it's in New York. Maybe lower Manhattan. The Velvet Underground
made an LP there.

If I were anal, I'd say "Search and Destroy" off _Raw Power_, since it's the
only official record released as "Iggy & The Stooges". But I think the
honor goes to "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

Howard Devoto, who left to form the brilliant Magazine. Guitarist Pete
Shelly took over primary vocal duties, though guitarist Steve Diggle sang

Motherfuckers on the original, Brothers and Sisters on the version cleaned
up by Elektra records without telling the band.

They sang back-up in an early Blondie lineup, and later had their own band

All of them. But I think you're thinking of Johnny Blitz.

Richard Hell and the Void Oids.

Say--didn't the Sex Pistols once offer $1 million dollars to anyone (stupid
enough) to commit suicide on stage during one of their concerts? Or is this
just another rumor? I guess the fool would have to bequeath the money
first. Ya sure can't spend it otherwise..

What was Television's first single called?

What was the "supergroup" featuring Dee Dee Ramone,Stiv Bators & Johnny
Thunders going to be called? (they never even rehearsed!)

Who pulled a knife on John Cale backstage at CBGB's in 1977?

Yes, I was going to qualify that if the question had been what instrument
did he PLAY, lol... 'cause a player he wasn't! Dumping Matlock for Sid was
disastrous for what had been a really smokin' band.

>What was Television's first single called?

That would be Little Johnny Jewel (Pt's I & II, IIRC)... on the illustrious
Ork record label...

True, Sid couldn't play and Matlock could, but by most accounts, Matlock
and the rest of the band didn't get along. Plus, Sid and Johnny were
friends. And, Malcolm McClaren seemed more interested in creating a pop
phenomenon than in the actual music; it seemed that he and Johnny were
the two key figures (and couldn't really stand one another).

Imagine, though, what the Pistols might have been had Jah Wobble of
P.I.L. been their bassist. Perhaps they might have lasted a bit longer
and become what the early P.I.L. were. Well, it's fun to speculate.

Yep. Unfortunately, Matlock was one of the main writers in the band as
well. So the band may have been more intense/marketable with Sid, but it
gave up a great deal in terms of structure.

Can't see Jones and Cook going along with it, though. Even the early P.I.L.
would have likely been too artsy/weird for 'em. IMO, of course.

Yeah, the more I think about it, there more I think it probably wouldn't
have worked, for exactly the reason you indicate. I think that such
musical differences between Lydon and Jones/Cook is one of the main
reasons why the Pistols broke up in the first place.

All of which reminds me... did ya see "The Filth & the Fury"? Great movie,
and some KILLER footage of them playing... It's an excellent slice of the
history of the time AND one of the better films about what it's like to just
be in a band that I've seen.

I saw it recently, Lenny, and I thought it was great, although I was a
bit puzzled as to why the interviewees faces were darkened. What was
that all about?

Nontheless, I really enjoyed it, particularly the comments of Lydon, who
is one of the wittiest, most intelligent rock stars that ever lived. I
was also suprisingly moved when he got all emotional while discussing
Sid.

I'm actually thinking of showing this to my sociology class next term.

This was already answered by Lenny Smith, but just to repeat: "Little
Johnny Jewel" (a song I was fortunate enough to hear Tom Verlaine
perform live years later)

The Junkies? (I vaguely remember hearing something about this)

Sid Vicious? I know he assaulted Todd Smith, Patti's brother, at one
point.

I would guess it was to keep the focus on who they were then, and what
happened then, so it didn't become a where are they now... I'd like to
think it wasn't because they were uncomfortable with getting older...
(Well, Johnny's still on the tube fairly often, so I doubt he has any such
problem)...

Couldn't agree with you more about Johnny. Very bright guy. And you're
right... that was a side he's maybe NEVER shown the public before.

If you do, I'd love it if you'd post the reaction. I've found this movie
well-received by a broad range of people, whether they liked the Pistols or
not going into it.

Johnny wanted to call the Heartbreakers "The Junkies" when LAMF was coming out
but was wisely talked out of it...

The Bators/Ramone/Thunders band was to be called "The Whores of Babylon"

This would have been an amazing band, had they pulled it off. I'm
assuming Jerry Nolan would have been the drummer (or perhaps Ty Stixx).
From what I've read of Legs McNeil's book, these three guys would hhave
gotten along well, given their shared penchant for certain, ahem,
extracurricular activities.

Incidentally, I checked out your website and am very impressed. Very
cool. One place I looked was the Johnny Thunders link. I burst out
laughing when I saw the photo of Johnny and Syl at Disneyworld; I'm sure
that there are some great stories attached to that taking place. I can
just picture some worried parents grabbing hold of their kids to keep
them away from these transvestite junkie degenerates walking around
wasted amidst Mickey and Pluto. Hysterical.

I also dug your photos of Johnny in his pink pants and black shirt,
taken at a show. I never got to see him live, much to my regret.
