One of the most amusing genres in motion picture history has got to be
the extravagant, blockbuster disaster movies of the 1970s. As a kid
growing up in this era, I was a rabid fan of such movies as Earthquake,
The Towering Inferno, and The Poseidon Adventure.

Remember Sensurround? All-star casts? And lines like, "We should never
have built buildings this high, not here [in LA]".

For those of you interested, here is a list of disaster movies from the
1970s that I can remember. Some of these movies have got to be the worst
movies ever made. If you think of any more, let me know.

The Poseidon Adventure
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure
Juggernaut
Airport
Airport 75
Airport 77
Airport 79
... and countless other airplane disaster movies
Earthquake
The Towering Inferno
Hurricane (the 1970s B movie with Larry Hagman)
The Hidenburg
RollerCoaster
The Swarm
City on Fire
Meteor
Midway (war movie in Sensurround with disaster movie look-and-feel)
The Cassandra Crossing (action movie with disaster movie ending)

There's some really bad Irwin Allen movie that has Paul Newman on a
resort island trying to save people from an exploding volcanoe. Does
anyone remember the name of this movie?

i don't know if WWII movies qualify for 'disaster' but how about "Tora,
Tora, Tora"? all star cast of several nationalities, widescreen death and
destruction, etc.

The Day the World Ended (1979) . A really awful flick.

What about Rodent disaster movies. Ben and Willard spring to mind (I think?).
The excellent 'Bug'- about incendiary insects from outer space, really
cool electronic soundtrack.

: No, you're not imagining it. A guy turns into a snake; also one of my
: favorites; I think your brother and I would get along!

: I'm thinking it might have been Jan-Michel Vincent but I might be
: confusing it with that other druggy movie where he's in the Marines.

"Ssssss" had Strother Martin as the mad-scientist type and Dirk Benedict
as the Man/Snake.

Wasn't Corvette Summer the movie Mark Hamill made after Star Wars, and after
he'd smashed his face up in car wreck?

I don't think his nose was ever quite the same....

Wasn't there some movies called _Frog_ or something like that? It was
about frogs and toads that turned deadly in the Everglades. I saw it in the
summer of '76 on television while in Orlando with my high school band.
We were in a Bicentennial parade at Disneyworld.

Not really a disaster movie in the Irwin Allen genre, but nevertheless a
really bad 70s movie about impending disaster.
