I'm just back from a totally wonderful day spent in the company of Anne,
Nanc, Sandy, Jim, Kelly, Buddy and Stevie Nice. What a day it was, starting
with a deluge of heavy rain at Astor Place, NYC, for the beginning of our
gathering. While our clothes and backpacks may have been dampened, our spirits
were anything but.

I was, I guess, the first to arrive. I waited outside the designated Starbucks,
where the weather was ranging back and forth from light drizzle to near thunderstorm.
After getting rather wet, I made my way into the Starbucks, and was joined
shortly thereafter by Buddy, and then by a drenched Kelly, and then shortly
thereafter by a guy holding a handwritten "alt.culture.us.1970s" sign, a
guy who, much to our delight, turned out to be Stevie. We got ourselves our
beverages, found a table near the window, and anxiously awaited the arrivel
of our Boston friends. They then arrived, and after lots of hugs, (and a
somewhat tense encounter with a guy we thought might be Dr. Nate, LOL, actually
a practical joke - it was a friend of the Bostonians) we made our way toward
St. Mark's Place, initially another less crowded Starbucks, but the deciding
to get a bite to eat. We stopped in at a pizzaria on St. the corner of 3rd
and St. Marks; we hung out there for a while, eating, talking, and taking
photos; in fact, we have, I think, a fairly extensive photographic record
of our day.

After hanging there for an extended time, the sky seemed to be clearing up.
We made a plan, and headed out. Stevie wanted to pick up a magazine at Tower
Books, so we headed in that direction. I decided we should all go see CBGBs,
the cradle of 70s punk rock, so we made our way to this sacred shrine in
the Bowery, with Buddy offering us some colorful local history. Around 4:00,
as we approached Tower, Buddy's cell phone rang. It was Lizzie, with whom
we all got to talk, calling from Philadelphia. Lizzie was great to talk with,
and we all applauded when we heard of her game show success of getting to
the next round.

We then stopped at CBGBs, snapping more photos. Our plan, then, was to head
up to Times Square, and then to Central Park, the Dakota (John Lennon's building,
and the place where he was killed), and then Strawberry Fields (back in Central
Park).

It took a while on the Houston Street subway for the train to arrive; In
fact, we debated modes of transportation, but settled on the subway. Finally,
the train arrived, and we were quickly in Times Square, where we blended
in with all the tourists. More photos. We walked north, going past all the
main attractions like MTV and the ABC studios. Kelly pointed out the place
where she works. We stopped briefly at one of the big hotels, the Hilton
I think, so some of us could use the bathrooms, and then walked over past
the Ed Sullivan Theater, where David Letterman works, and the businesses
on Broadway made famous by Letterman (in fact, I think either Serajul or
Mujibar was standing in the doorway of their store).

We then crossed 59th Street, and entered Central Park, walking past Tavern
on the Green, and planting ourselves on a bench, so we could rest up. I got
into a conversation about Russia with a nice 60ish Russian lady, who was
there with her husband (and then started talking with Buddy about Brooklyn).
She was amazed that the lot of us all got together via the Internet.

Finally, we went to the Dakota and to Strawberry Fields; Kelly, who is sometimes
just a tad on the sacrastic side, said "I don't see any strawberries," which
led to a sort of jokey exposition of "real" strawberries vs. "mental" strawberries
and the inherent meanings of Beatles lyrics, particularly those from their
psychedelic phase.

All this walking, talking, joking, and phototaking, and we were naturally
hungry. Kelly suggested a local BBQ place on 72nd St., and my was the food
hearty and tasty. Before we ate, though, they brought us our drinks - cokes,
Daquaris, Margaritas, etc. The classes were so huge that we started joking
about monster cokes, pronouncing the word coke so that it sounded like we
were saying you know what.

Well, it was a very full, enjoyable day. We all seemed to ebjoy one another's
company. Kelly, Stevie and I ended the evening with a nightcap and talked
music. As Nancy, Sandy, Jim, and Anne were about to leave, we all felt sad
for the evening to be coming to a close. However, we have laid the foundation
for more of these gathering. Most of you guys were there in spirit, and,
much to our satisfaction, Liz was there in voice.

Oh, one other thing; After I sang a refrain of "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" in
the pizzaria, Kelly and Buddy admitted to me the name of the person with
whom they'd have me hook up; I'm staying silent on this name, however.

Well, let me close here. It's late and I need to be logging off soon. I'll
let the others who were there tonight to pick up on this thread.

A few quick(not deep) thoughts.

"Wow New York" IS " just I pictured it, skyscrapers and everything"! A lot of
similarities between Boston and N.Y. City (more than differences). You can
really get 5 years for carrying a switchblade in N.Y? Geez get a gun .The part
of Dr. Nate was played by Matt who is not Doctor but plays one at Starbucks.
The part of Justin was played by Fajita. John Rocker makes some good points
,but that's the city. I never knew punk rock had a birthplace?
I like a color coded subway system.

That's okay, cause I know you probably really really want to teach the world
to sing in perfect harmony.

Alright, you've forced my hand. It was The Crapilator. You all thought that
my niceness would balance out Crappy's meanness, right? But as I said, Crapilator's
not my type. Plus, I think the Crapilator's a guy (though we're not completely
sure).

Wow...I finally made it to the computer! I've been SO busy since I got
home!....well, ok, I've been sleeping but it was a LONG ride!!!! :)

I'm going to post my own reply to this before I read anyone elses. If I read
everyones first I'll have nothing left to say. So forgive me if I repeat things
that have already been said...

Let me start out by saying that it was a wicked awesome day!!!! What a
wonderful group of people we met! Tom we had met when he came to Boston and it
was so wonderful to see him again! I really felt like he's someone I had known
for a long while. He's so much fun to talk to and really brings up so many fun
topics to talk about.
He got to show us the famous CBGBs and he was excited as a little kid about it
:) We took a picture of him in front of it....I hope it comes out good!

Kelly was a sweet heart! (a little freshy too! LOL) She actually made Tom
sing Match Maker, Match Maker in the pizza shop we had lunch in for her
expertise on fixing him up with someone! Then he got dropped like a lead
balloon! But it was a lot of fun for us hearing him sing! While walking
around, Kelly pointed out the building she works in. It's one of those huge
skyscrappers! Thank god for elevators, huh? :)

Steve had the most pronounced NY accent of them all I think. He really said
cwofee! My niece always kids around and says "let's have cwofee and twalk" and
I always laugh and think "nobody really talks like that". But he DOES!!! It
was so cool! Steve fit right in to our little group like he's been there
forever. (aside from his taste in music...ONLY KIDDING STEEEEEVE!!!!) :) He
told us the most amazing story of his Dad being one of the hostages in Beruit.
He's has to tell the rest of you!

And then there was Buddy! He is just as wonderful in person as he is in here.
Actually, he's even sweeter than he lets on, but what you see is what you get
with Buddy. He has such a twinkle in his eye when he smiles and his warmth
just jumps out at you. He was just the most wonderful tour guide! There is
not much he doesn't know about his city! I got a little tired of hearing about
his wonderful girl Dawna, but ya know....(Just Kidding! I loved hearing you go
on and on about someone I admire and love too! ;) )

We had a wondeful trip Nanc, Anne, Jimmy and I. It didn't start out too good
here in Boston as Jimmy had to kick around and big metal ashtray and do his
evil looking act to get Hertz to rent us a car! But in the end they apologized
and upgraded us so it worked quite well :)
The ride down was just a blast! We talked and laughed to whole was down. AND
we listened to my Lost 45s tapes from the '92 top 100 show. It was like being
16 again! It was a carefree ride mostly, except Nanc got stuck in the car and
couldn't get out when we pulled into McDonalds. She was banging on the door
window yelling "I CAN'T GET OUT" till Anne rescued her. "Nanc....pull up the
little button" heeheehee! We got to my cousins at about 8:00 (think?) and got
to see his spectacular house! I was the most gorgeous thing I ever saw! And
I'm so glad it's his. He has the most sweetest little puppy too, Fahita. He
and his partner Matt along with their friend Robin went out for a late night
dessert at the coolest diner!

The next morning we got started about 1:00 or so heading into the city. Ed and
Matt also have a condo in Manhattan so we went there to park. It start pouring
torrential rains there. We waited and waited in the lobby (and saw the most
incredible cat I had ever seen. It's called a Savanna Cat and was as big as a
Lynx!) for the raging storm to stop. Well, it finally tappered off to the
point where we could run into a cab and we were off! We got to Starbucks and
met up with everyone. I had no trouble recognizing any of them! They, on the
other hand had a little trouble figuring out who Matt was, lol! Anyway, we
made our introductions and headed down the street to the pizza place to talk
and have lunch. It's so funny how at ease I feel with people I've met so far
from the group. I only get stumped for something to say when I'm trying to
think of ALL I WANT to say and ask! And I'm not like that with people who I've
just met, mostly.
Well, from there we went on a walk and a train ride touring NYC. As I said,
Buddy was the most incredible tour guide. He knows the place in and out.
Everyone pointed things out to us along the way. It was great! And Buddy and
Kelly are right....NY is a wonderful city! (ok..I said it!)
Their subway system isn't as easy to understand as Boston (we have color coded
maps all over the cars for people who don't know where they're going) and they
do have the Yankees. But other than that, it's just a wonderful city!

Oh, before we got to the train LIZ called!!! That was so wonderful too!!! She
sounds just as warm on the phone as she does in her posts! I cannot WAIT for
her to get on Jeopardy if she does. It will be so nerve wracking to watch
though! (Go Liz!)

After we got off the train we walked to Cental Park and I got to see Strawberry
Fields, one the the things I said I had to do before I die. It took me a
little by surprised how much it moved me to see that little mosiac with the
word Imagine on it. We then crossed to see the Dakota. (thanks guys for taking
us there) Right near the Dakota we went to a restaurant ( I forget the name!)
and spent the next hour or so eating and talking and laughing. I was SO sad to
see it end. It just wasn't long enough! As we were driving away in my cousins
jeep, I looked out and saw Buddy, Kelly, Tom and Steve walking down the street
and felt this saddness. But we did all promise to meet again in the not too
distant future.

Oh, one other little tidbit that fit into our group....on the way down in the
car, Anne and I were explaining to Jimmy and Nanc how we used to do this thing
when we were little where if you saw a Lucky Strikes package on the ground, you
got to hit the person you were with if you stepped on it and yelled Lucky
Strike!!! Anne kidded that I carried around one in my pocket so whenever I
wanted to smack her, I'd just toss it on the ground and WHACK! Well, here we
were walking down the streets of NY and what do I see lying on the ground?!!!!
LOL! I got to whack her!!!! :)

I just want to thank all you NYers for such a wonderful day. I hope we can
show you as good a time when you come to Boston one day! :)

Man, youse guys sound like you had such a great time! I am truly envious! I
have enjoyed reading these posts today at work and they just keep mounting
up... this whole weekend (I was in NY STATE BTW) I was wondering what you
all were up to.

My Aunt's friend is a travel agent and has promised to look into some
airline tickets for us Ontario girls (Jamie Rhonda and I) for a
cost-efficient ticket from Buffalo to NYC for the next gathering.

I especially LOVED Steve appearing with the sign... Can I borrow you if I
get to see Raw is War this September, Steve?

Thanks Erin... I can never figure that stuff out. Our grade was the first to
start school with the total metric system. This leaves me at a huge loss
when I go to see friends and family in the states. I think the most
confusing is the miles per hour thing. I don't get doing 90km/h on a major
highway but at the same time, I just *know* the state police or Troopers
would pull a Canuck before a fellow country person (hell, I'd do the same
thing if roles were reversed).

Heh, you mean in celsius? Lesseeeeee (knowing the answer but making a show
of it <G>)....

-40 - 32 = -72
-72*5 = -360
-360/9 = -40!!!

Now, with this above formula, you, too can convert Farenheit to Celsius.
Conversely...

- 40 x 9 = -360
-360/5 = -72
-72 + 32 = -40!!!

(heh, didn't really plan to put both conversions down, but I actually did
the whole thing doing Celsius to Farenheit, when I realized I'd done the
opposite of what I'd wanted to do. I don't believe in wasting math, so,
I've put in both conversions <G>).

Since I got on the Internet and have made many
international friends I keep a simple and free
program handy that allows me to do many conversions
(I can spell mathematics but can't do it <g>).

It's called Convert and can be found here:

All I have to do is one of 2 things. Either step outside cos here we have 2
temperatures all year long. Hot & summer. The other way is to just look at
the mirror in my truck. It has the temp on it. Toes & fingers are thereby
saved for other things.

Heh, sorry, Rach...I tend to forget that the rest of the world doesn't have
a 'thing' for numbers like I do...

I guess I misread that one. I thought you were teasing HIM for his accent,
not the other way around. :)

Ahem. (Ackack) So sorry, dear, sweet, Sandy!

And so the word went out from Tom <antipos...@127.0.0.1>:

>I'm just back from a totally wonderful day spent in the company of Anne,
>Nanc, Sandy, Jim, Kelly, Buddy and Stevie Nice.

<snippage>

Old news to the rest of you now, music to my eyes today as I finally catchup.
Sounds like you guys had a wonderful day, I'm so jealous I couldn't be there!

>a guy holding a handwritten "alt.culture.us.1970s" sign, a guy who, much to
>our delight, turned out to be Stevie.

Right on, Stevie, what a guy! Did you feel like a dweeb or what? :-)

>(and a somewhat tense encounter with a guy we thought might be Dr. Nate,
>LOL, actually a practical joke - it was a friend of the Bostonians)

Rach filled me in on this goodie on the phone, LMAO! What I wouldn't give
to have seen your faces, bwaahaa! Score one for the Bostonians.

>in fact, we have, I think, a fairly extensive photographic record of our day.

And, as another post mentioned, please DO send 'em to me ASAP, Tom,
I can't wait to put together a webpage for 'em. Kelly, did I ever email you
about putting your mug on the site? I know I meant to recently with a pic from
Sandy and Anne's last visit but maybe not. Anyway, let me know, I won't
post any pics of you without your permission. Ditto for Jim and Stevie, natch.

>I decided we should all go see CBGBs, the cradle of 70s punk rock, so we
>made our way to this sacred shrine in the Bowery, with Buddy offering us
>some colorful local history.

*sigh* Believe me, this old punker was there in spirit, bet that was pretty cool.
Sign me up for the CBGB's tour when I finally do get down there, guys!

>the Dakota (John Lennon's building, and the place where he was killed),
>and then Strawberry Fields (back in Central Park).

Pencil me in for these two landmarks as well! Sandy, I know just what you
mean about the emotional impact of the Imagine mosaic in Strawberry Fields.
I haven't seen it myself yet, but, if you'll pardon the pun, I can well imagine it.

>Oh, one other thing; After I sang a refrain of "Matchmaker, Matchmaker"

Ooooo, a bonus tune from Tommy! ;-) Anyone videotape this goodie for
future blackmailing purposes?

>in the pizzaria, Kelly and Buddy admitted to me the name of the person with
>whom they'd have me hook up; I'm staying silent on this name, however.

It was me, right? Go on, I won't tell anyone, it just *had* to be me. We got that
whole intellectual connection thing going on already and stuff like that there ;-)

Cheers,

TD
