Turkey is opening a case against the Nobel Academy

Famous Turkish lawyer Kemal Kerincsiz announced that he would take the
Academy of Nobel in Sweden to a court because of the Orhan Pamuk's winning
of the Nobel in Literature. Kerincsiz previously opened a case against the
Orhan Pamuk and Elif Safak both were accused of "insulting the great Turkish
nation"

Kerincsiz talked to Turkish NTV channel as saying the Nobel price should
have criteria for objectiveness. He said, "We think the price Orhan Pamuk
got was a controversial and this reward is completely political. This is
Armenian Diaspora's hard work"

Kerincsiz said, Turks will open a case against the Nobel Academy and this
will be a first such a case in its kind. He says the case will be open
against the Nobel Academy in Sweden and this will comply with Swedish laws.
He also said the reward Orhan Pamuk got from this academy is in their eyes
is controversial and they will make sure it will stay as this. Insulting the
Turkish people's values has its price and punishment.

What Kemal Kerincsiz says is right, but going to court is bullshit.
For me too is Orhan Pamuk not worth the Nobel prize for literature.
He is a 3rd class writer, so is his work.
Orhan Pamuk's work did not deserve a Nobel price.
It was a political decision, against the idea of Alfred Nobel.

*ROTFLOL* Thanks for posting this, Ali!

The whole world will slowly learn what the contribution of Turks and
"Turkishness" to mankind really means: hilarious, outrageous stupidity!!

Though I got to know already the special "mental abilities" of the Turks on
Usenet, time and again it happens that I'm completely taken aback by the
degree of idiocy that seems to be really innate with that people who would
be NOTHING without the assistance and billions of $ and € of steady aid
from the US and Europe!

I hope, there will be still more posts like this great, revealing news!
Keep up the good work, Ali!

If true, this is really not productive. Most Nobel winners have been
controversial--taking the Nobel committee to court would simply invite
ridicule. As a Turk, I would not support such a thing...

It has been debated hotly whether Orhan Pamuk has much to say, but he
is an _excellent_ writer--you have to give him that, at least. I
recommend his book "The Black Book" for good insights into the
dichotomy experienced by most Turks...but only if you like symbolism
and crafty writing. My Name is Red and Snow were unreadable (to me, at
least). His earliest work is the best (Cevdet Bey and His Sons, or The
White Castle if you're into the more sensational).

Now, if we could only get the adults talking, perhaps we'd get
somewhere :)

Just for the record. I have read all of Orhan Pamuk's books that are
translated into English:

Snow, White Castle, My Name Is Red, A New Life, The Black Book,
and Istanbul

He is an excellent author. I don't know the competition so cannot
judge if he was best for the 2006 Nobel prize. I was certain he
would win it at some time.

Turkey should be proud of him. He is a truly patriotic Turk.

The Armenian quarrel is poisoning discourse in Turkey. What Turkey
needs is a "truth and reconciliation" project. At the very least a panel
of distinguished historians should be established to compile the history.

Thank heavens the United States has accepted its own ugly history of
ethnic cleansing and genocide of the native Americans and also its
history of slave-holding. It takes centuries for the stain to fade. And
two-hundred years ago the United States had an "Alien and Sedition Act"
not unlike Turkey's Article 301. It was quickly revoked.

Turkish history is extraordinarily complex and should be
discussed without threats of trial and punishment.

Mason what you are saying above is impossible in the current regime of
Turkey. Remember that the Armenian genocide have happened 90 years ago and
still could put you in jail if you speak against the states' doctorines but
Kurds in Turkey are sloughtered in big quantites and the area where the
Kurds live are ethnically cleansing day after day. You can't even speak
against the attorocities that is happening NOW, how do you expect Turkey to
let you speak freely about the attrocidies have happend 90 years ago. Orhan
Pamuk was to first publicly known Turk to speak about Kurdish massacres in
Turkey eventhough Yasar Kemal previously touched the sentence still he was
ignored because many people thought he would be biases as he was Kurdish.
Another thing is that a panel that you are talking about should be
established in Turkey because they are the only country left who does not
recognise the genocide. They have to prove themselves that genocide indeed
have happened.

I guess every country had their bad share of the past but the countries
which can not face with their past doom to repeat their attrocidies in the
present and in the future.

As I said only way to do that is to change the regime or the system in
Turkey. Army have extraordinary powers in Turkey with the police. Turkish
constitution was written by the military junta in 1982 and still haven't
changed, because to change this you need at least 70-75% majority in the
parliement which is impossible.

Fully agreed!
It's sad that retrograde, extremist Turks like the Baba clown are
badmouthing an excellent writer just because he is not what the Turkish
establishment likes...
It's like they are shooting their own foot, the poor idiots!
Another proof of how retrograde and full of hatred some extremist Turks are.
Hopefully the majority of the Turks are not like this low educated clown...
Congratulations again to Mr. Pamuk and to the decent Turks!

Metehan, my advice to you is not to linger too long around here because the
'griks' (as opposed to Greeks) around here will sooner or later make you
throw your hands up in despair and become vile-mouthed like me. Believe me
there is no other way of talking to these extremist 'griks' and their
cronies. You will also find out sooner or later that they are unbelievably
and incurably hostile to anything Turkish and also that there is no way you
can build bridges across the divide with them around.
