a rpcket to the moon (this was late 1920's, IIRC), the august NY Times
sneered about how Goddard didn't have the right education, and that
space flight was clearly impossible, for the very reasons you cite.

They retracted that editorial in July, 1969 when Neil Armstrong stepped
on the lunar surface.

deep space BECAUSE for every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction. And there is very little atmospheric or gravitational

the "equal and opposite" sum effect is nearly just that. The solar
wind from the Sun probably affects deep space instruments more than
any other influence, at least within our own solar system.

The published study of astronomy isn't all conspiracy. Some of it
is actually educational, enlightening, entertaining and inspiring.
I only wish all of it was that way. Much of it is not.

14 miles wide. Even if there were a 'laser reflector' on the moon,
there is no way to aim a laser to hit such a small thing from so far

there, just go looking. Google - space shuttle docking video. Many
hits show up.

Rockets just use the concept that the center of mass is conserved.
So when you spit fuel out on end, the center of mass must move

The shuttle spends quite a bit of it's ascent ...losing altitude in order
to gain enough speed. Below is it's ascent profile in detail, you can
see that it peaks at 356,000 feet at about mach 10. Then it
starts to lose altitude all the way to mach 25, down to about
344,000 feet. At that point it has enough speed so that the
curvature of the Earth falls away faster than the shuttle falls
due to gravity, so it can just ...coast into a higher orbit.

You can imagine how something as heavy as the shuttle, and
with those huge engines, would accelerate ...downhill like a
runaway freight train. Right?
