However, when I turn it on with the burned cpu still mounted, nothing
happens, nothing at all. No PS-fan that is goďng to spin, no BIOS error
message that the cpu is bad or damaged, nothing.
My question is, can I espect the board is still ok?
Must not I get an error message from the BIOS that something is wrong? The
reason for my asking is that I want to know wether I have to buy only a new
cpu or a new board as well and when I just try and the board is dameged
after all, could I possibly destroy the new bought cpu doďng that?
By the way, the board is (or was) a K7S5A
What should I do?

The CPU is what sends messages to the video card to be displayed on
the monitor.
If the CPU is dead, there will be nothing displayed on the screen.
Even without the CPU running though, you should hear the hard drive
start up, should probably see the LEDs on the CD-ROM drive(s) flash,
probably the LED on the floppy drive too. If there are any case fans,
they should run as well.
If you don't get any of the above, it's possible the power supply has
been damaged and needs to be replaced as well.

It's possible the motherboard has also been damaged by the overheating
CPU. If you bought the components from a local shop, you could take
the power supply, motherboard and CPU back to them and let them test
these components for you.
Otherwise, you're right- you may run the risk of damaging a new CPU
chip, although I'd say that's a remote possibility.

Computer power supplies have over voltage and over current protection.
If there is a short circuit in the cpu, the power supply will shut
itself off within a couple of thousandths of a second and you will
never know it started to come on. Try pulling out the CPU to see if
the fans will start up.

When I tried a Duron 900 I got (its broken, dont work AT ALL :/) the
motherboard would not power up at all, there was no single, occasionally the
fan would spin 4 times then its dead.. no noises
replaced it with a working CPU... yep all worked :)
Funny though Karien, my CPU died on the 28th as well :( waiting for a new
one.... what with it being Easter... theres no real chance of geting it
replaced until next week and I have important coursework due in :(
Oh well, we live and we learn :)

Sorry to hear that :-(. From our experience as a dealer, most people only
have to install a new CPU to get things working again. You won't know until
you try. A damaged motherboard should not destroy a CPU.
