Hello group!

I am experiencing a rather strange problem with my Mitsumi CR-4802TE writer
(firmware 2.0D):
According to whatever software I use for writing CDs, the writing process
is OK and no errors occur. The drive's red light also indicates that
writing is in progress. But afterwards, the CD-R is still empty! There is
no track or lead-in/out written.

This problem occurs in several PCs I've tried the drive in; I used Nero
under Windows as well as the cdrecord-tools under Linux and I never got an
error message. I also used different media.

After I first noticed the problem, I did not use the drive for a long time.
As I had forgotten about the problem, I yesterday tried again and it worked
for two discs. The next ones again failed as described.

Does anyone of you have an idea what I might do to get the drive working
again? As the problem is obviously with the laser, is it fixable/worth
fixing at all?

Thanks in advance,

Johannes

The first operation in writing is to set (calibrate) the power for the
write laser. It appears from your report that the calibration is
failing. If that happens on the medium recommended by the manufacturer,
you probably have defective hardware. There's a faint chance that it's a
firmware problem, so you might try reloading it (or upgrading it), but
the odds are that the easy answers don't apply.

Hello!

Thanks for your hint, but I _am_ sure, the drive is not in any test-mode.

Are you selecting the Close Session option, not doing this
I've found the drive to go through the burn motions but nothing is
visible on the CD after the burn, using the Append option and
close/finalise, and adding something will sometimes fix it, but not
always I've found,
Regards

Jim.
