Motherboard Ticking sound

I installed a new nic card on my neigbors computer after his on-board
port seemed to go out. After installing, the new card worked and
network and internet connectivity was restored. I had reinstalled his
operating system while I was in there (Windows XP sp2) and things were
running smoothly. I went to Microsoft Update and started downloading
and installing various updates. In the middle of this, the computer
screen went blank and I started hearing a rapid clicking noise. I
turned off the computer and turned it back on. It didn't boot and the
ticking continues. My first thought was the hard drive. I turned off
the computer and disconnected the harddrive, floppy, both CD/DVD
drives, the new network card, sound card, etc... Pretty much
disconnected all from the motherboard but the memory. Anyway, I
started the computer and the ticking noise continued. I finally
traced it tho the PCs small speaker. I'm somewhat familar with the
beeps that motherboards will sound when there is a problem, but not
this constant ticking. Does anyone know what this is or what it
means?

coincidence, or the lightning that fried the old nic has finally
damaged the mainboard as well.
