I need a substitute for Windows Explorer. I have been using "Xplorer2"
but it just doesn't make the grade.

Thanks in advance,

Dave H.

freeCommander is pretty good.
Pablo Commander is capable but lacks in features.
Total Commander is okay.
My personal favorite is Servant Salamander but it is shareware.

Thanks for your reply.

I want a simple two pain window, without all the whistles and bells.
One requirement is that it has it's own search function. I am using
Windows Vista and the search function stinks.

Check out 2xexplorer -- older version of xplorer2
http://netez.com/2xExplorer/intro.html

freeCommander should fit your requirements too.

Older Servant Salamander may be worth your while also.

I'm afraid Explorer2 is about as good as it gets. :(

Perhaps Power Desk would work for you, but it's pretty heavy.

wrong, Wrong, WRONG. . .

Did you look at web page? What part of "PowerDesk 6 Standard Edition -
Free!" and "This is fully usable without any time-limits." don't you

It's not Freeware but it IS free. I gave the applicable ware types (in

My FIRST post about this quoted the very clear statements on the web

You keep speculating without a shred of evidence AND you keep clipping

You presented your "harmless speculation" as fact when you said 'now
it is a "free trial"', even though earlier posts and the website
itself made it clear that your speculation was wrong. That's not a
good idea, and neither is pretending that the people who correct
and/or disagree with you are angry, egotistical, or have hidden
agendas.

Why do you say this? You are coming across as some sort of expert on
everything, and yet when someone calls you on your "facts" you complain
that they are trying to be newsgroup police. Additionally you persist
at proving your point way after you have been proven wrong.

I have no problem with your top ten lists or opinion on firewalls, but
it does irk me when you refuse to state that your opinion is based on
your personal experience and try to come off as an expert who knows
what they are talking about. There are many knowledgeable people in
this group that know much more about freeware than you do. Allow them
to help you learn something. Humility is a desirable characteristic --
obnoxiousness is not.

You remind me of this other fellow we had here for a few months, John
Jay Smith. Are you two related?

I'm using 1.47 with XP and the filters don't work. I assume this is the
bug but don't know why it is listed as affecting W98 though. Can't
remember what 1.46 lacked that made me stick with 1.47.

YW. :)

I think you have found a different bug - congratulations. ;) FYI this is
the info the author had on his web site back when. . .

"There is a bug in v1.47 that prevents it to work correctly under Win9x
and WinME systems. It is due to some features designed exclusively for
NT platform (WinNT 4.0, Win2000, WinXP...) and on these systems TN works
without any problems. I'm working on the fix for the bug but in mean
time please use older version of Turbo Navigator if you are running
Win9x operating system. Both versions can be found on download page. I
am sorry for inconvenience."
