SnagIt has a simple editor for adding pretty speech balloons, arrows,
and text, all with very good defaults (thick lines, large fonts, etc.).

Is there a freeware graphics editor that starts up with good defaults
for line thickness and fonts? With Paint I have to choose the line
thickness and fonts and colors every time (and it's not nicely aliased
like SnagIt's).

Wow - that looks promising. I'm looking forward to trying out the
annotations!

Yup, screenshot captor rocks - the arrows and annotations (with
shading) are super easy to use. And I think it saves your color/line
preferences on exit.

The text initially appears blocky (aliased), but the smoothing happens
when you save or copy to the clipboard, so it's a non-issue.

So if one wants a freeware equivalent of SnagIt, I'd suggest Screenshot
Captor + CamStudio (for capturing video) + maybe MWSnap (for anything
Screenshot Captor doesn't have).

Recommended Screenshot Captor settings:
- arrows: red, line width 5
- text boxes: turn on shadows
- autofit: off. Fix zoom at 100%
