Due to the crappy way they set up a download from a bogged down website I've
put the two files into a downloads area on a couple of my sites. You can
get them from either http://fuqqinsuqs.sytes.net or http://ceg.sytes.net .
Click on the DOWNLOADS link then follow to ARCHIVERS->RAR UTILITIES. Both
the WinRAR 3.51 and the key file are available. If that doesn't work let me
know and I'll put them into my ftp space.

that offer was for 1 day I think.... not for distribution...

That is true, but they promised to send the key to everyone who clicks on
their link, but were unable to do so for technical reasons. Taht would mean
that there are a lot of people who didn't recieve a key though they have a
right to it (tried to get it yesterday).

Well, for "technical reasons" a lot of us couldn't even click on the link.
If Win-rar were really launching an honest offer and not a scam, they should
have least thought about their bandwidth capacities before going public.
Unfortunately, ceg is now on 404 too.

How is this utility better than IZArc or any other that handles RAR
files?

It can create RAR archives, something no free archiver can do. Appart from
that it's like any other archiver, and is different from IZarc only in some
details.

I'm not sure posting the key is legal. The way the offer operated is
they sent you an e-mail where you could download the key from a link in
the e-mail.

The message from web site that said the offer is over said you could
still download the key if you got the e-mail. If you didn't get the
e-mail, I would assume you're out of luck.

I've looked at WinRAR. To be honest, I'm not sure it is all that much
better than TugZip. The only real reason you would need WinRAR is if
you want to create RAR files. Many freeware programs can unzip RAR
files but I think WinRAR is the only one that can create a RAR file.

WinRAR isn't even freeware so why are we talking about it here on this list?
The problem is that they promised a days free downloads of registration keys
for an old version (3.51, latest is 3.6) because us freeware/shareware users
had voted them "Best overall utility 2006". But they didn't deliver the
goods! They hid behind MySQL errors, 404's and other "Out of service"
screens for 24 hours!
If they had said nothing no-one would be talking about it here.
When you buy "their key" it is supposed to be valid for all subsequent
versions, so this not a "commercial risk" situation but more of a
promotional offer to entice people to pay for a "real" key for future
versions.
WinRAR should thank Ceg and follwers for helping save its reputation on the
net.
Perhaps now that alternatives have been mentionned, some of us will go and
have a look.
I, for one, think these scams from those who "refuse the commercial model"
and "defend the true spirit of the net" are worse than spam!

WinRAR has superior compression to WinZip, that's for sure. I compressed
20 MB of files to 7 MB with WinRAR, and WinZip did it to only 11 MB. So
that's a big plus in WinRAR's favour. (I tested with a mix of executables,
text files, bitmap images and MP3s, all in one folder).

Rubbish, as you must realise if you have been reading here in the last 24

Of course it isn't legal. Unless the WinRAR people have given
permission for others to distribute. Which I would think is highly
unlightly.

Without permission from the owner of the program this means that
the distribution is "warez". Stolen software in other words.

Yep, and if people had difficulty doing that they should take it up
with the WinRAR people.

Regards, John.

Not true. It took awhile, but I got it. I wonder how many people noticed
the message in the verification email that you could only try to access the
page twice using that link? Firefox kept timing out, and I kept "trying
again" but never went back to the email link to try and reload. Eventaully,
I got both the program and the key.

So do I. I use 7-Zip compression for many of my files. In fact, I did a
test several years ago where I converted Rar files to 7-Zip files & in
many of the test, the 7-Zip files were smaller than the Rar files.
