I dual boot with win98se and use mostly freeware in windows. However,
no Windows computer can be "all freeware" since the os is commercial.
Here's the freeware that I use on a regular basis:
Browser - kmeleon
Office suite - Open Office (though infrequently in Windows)
Firewall - kerio 3.15
Newsreader - Xnews
Email - Thunderbird
mp3 and streaming audio - XMPlay and QCD
File Manager - xplorer2, FMedit98, P3DO explorer
Anti Spyware - Adaware, Spybot
Email notification - Poptray
Time sync - neutron
RSS aggregator - Tristana
CD Burner - EAC, BurnAtOnce
Registry Cleaner - RegSeeker
Clipboard Utility - YCIII
Notepad - Editpad Lite
FTP - FTP Explorer
HTML editor - HTML Kit, (experimenting with Nvu)
Image Viewer - Irfanview
Image Manipulation - Photofiltre
Video - Real Alternative, Quick Time Alternative, Media Player Classic
File Eraser - Eraser
Zip Files - Ultimate Zip (freeware version) and Power Archiver (last
freeware version also)
I also use quick folders, WinPatrol, Cookie Master, EnditAll2,
EmptyTemp2, and TclockEx.
I routinely keep many other freeware programs with which to play and
experiment. I use a payware AV because I don't mess around with that.
I use win98se to play, Mandrake Linux to work.

The only things I've paid for, other than OS (98SE), were:
- mIRC (the ONLY IRC client that has the features I want)
- EAGLE (the schematics/PCB package I use for work - they have a limited
freeware edition)
- WinRAR (I need to create .RAR files)
Otherwise:
- Browser: Firefox
- e-mail: none... I read my e-mail on a UNIX shell account
- news: Gravity
- image editing: The GIMP
- audio player: foobar2000
- file sharing: Soulseek
Not much to say, really.

Gordon is an idiot.
My Primary PC (the one me and my wife use) is Win2K professional (I can
legally use this OS at home as long as I stay at my current job (but
that is very OT). It has all freeware on it except MS Office (again, I
can legally have it as long as I stay with my current job, but that too
is OT). You can see the list on my home page at the "tools of the
trade" link.
However, the server and our laptop (both of which are tired old 400 mhz
machines) run all "free" software utilizing Ubuntu Linux. I really like
that distro. Rather painless but still very configurable. I ordered 10
CD's and got them free (no postage or CD cost).

That's definitely not freeware, so you have already failed to reach
your goal. You will have to get rid of all Microsoft products just to
get started. Take a look at Knoppix. You can run it without installing
anything on your hard drive. I am in the process of switching
everything over to Slackware. I have three servers on it so far.

I typed mandrake into Google, and I think it was the second official site
listed that offered me a free download. (Basically it asked me whether I
was already a member, or was willing to consider becoming one in the near
future.)
Also it's currently on the cover of one of the Linux magazines.

Yes, I do - well, unless you count ad-supported Opera and Eudora
(which I'm hoping to convert to FireFox and Thunderbird).
Pretty much everything else I use is freeware (well, I got an alarm
clock program which is unpaid-for shareware - but I have some alarm
clock programs I haven't gotten around to replacing it with.)
I use IrfanView for image viewing, Winamp for media viewing (well, I
view my DVDs on the WinDVD I got with a drive) and music playing,
TextPad (more unpaid-for shareware I haven't gotten around to
replacing with the half-dozen other freeware editors I have - except
jEdit which I'm using more of) for text editing, OpenOffice for the
office suite (which I actually use very little so far), yProxy and
Free Agent for newsreading (which I may replace at some point), WS-FTP
Lite for FTP, freeware version of WallMaster for wallpaper management,
puTTY for Telnet/SSH, PowerDesk for desktop management (hoping to
replace that with something that irritates me less), ZipGenius for
archive management, AVG for AV, Kerio Personal Firewall, Ad-Aware for
spyware control (I get very little), CDBurnerXP Pro for burning CDs
and DVDs (when I don't use the Nero that came with the drives) plus
literally hundreds of freeware utilities for things like file
renaming when I need it.
And of course on the other side of the machine I have Red Hat 7.3
(soon to be upgraded to more current status, then replaced with
something like Fedora Core 3 or Mandrake 10 or SUSE 9.2) - and I have
five or ten GIG of free software to try out on that OS - not counting
thirty or more CDs and DVDs from Linux Format magazine full of Linux
software!
Getting the time to USE - or even REVIEW - this stuff is my
problem...:-) And I've got only a fraction (but the best fraction) of
the stuff that's out there!

Oh, I forgot - all my Windows OS (Windows 98, Windows 2000, and
Windows XP) didn't cost me a dime - and it was all (mostly) legal.
I got the 98 and 2000 from a developer who pays for ten seats - and he
gave me one of those seats. I got the XP from Microsoft's Academic
program via City College of San Francisco. I also got Microsoft
Project, Visio, and Windows Server 2003 that way - none of which I
use.
Find a community college near you that participates in the Windows
Academic program, sign up for a computer course (they only give the
freebies to computer students) and get yourself Windows XP
(Professional version, no less, not Home) for free!
For any snide remarks from others, I do PC tech support - I have to
have Windows on my machines. Otherwise I'd ditch them all for
Linux...

Not if you use any browser, actually. The page is fine, just a
table with links to liveCDs. There's a Google pagead script
embedded at the bottom, but nothing that installs anything.
The genius Space Monkey has hit upon the never-before-tried

My "Great HopE" is that the time you spend counting quoting lines bursts a
vessel.
Resting safely in your cocoon.
Thanks for the "genius" part. :)
Mozilla sucks. Internet Explorer sucks. Opera sucks. Every browser sucks.
Linux sucks. All alternate OS's suck.
Life sucks. We're all doomed.
Joining the mainstream are you, /3iff //ullins? ;)

THX for your kind general understanding of the principles/substance of
my remark.

Because it's a troll. That's what it does.
My new "Great HopE" is the time you spend looking at how your "client"
counts quoting lines bursts a vessel.
BTW, what does "so I have not to count" mean?
*I* *beg* *your* *pardon*?!
