Are the UM tunnels accessible through buildings in general? What's the
attitude of the phys plant workers who we might bump into? Will they
pull out a shotgun? :)

At MIT you can kinda just walk around and there are random "big loud
scary rooms" that you can just wander through and sometimes take a detour
down a hatch or something. but it doesn't seem similiar here .Things seem
much more locked door and it's kinda obvious that you might be somewhere
that you didn't just wander into by mistake ?

Yes, you can enter through buildings. These are steam tunnels that heat the
buildings here on campus. The easiest ones that I know of are in the Campus
Center. Over by the Barber Shop/Arcade area is one entrance. The other is in
the BatCave, aka the private faculty/free parking garage (about three tunnel
entrances in there).
At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the tunnels are very cool. The
campus steam tunnels connect to the Catacombs of Worcester. The catacombs in
Worcester date back to the mid 1700's when a small plague ripped through the
city. The tunnels were used to bring the infected corpses out of the city and
out into the middle of nowhere (what is now Grafton). Most of these tunnels
connect to the old Churches and Hospitals. I've been in them once. Very Cool.
They go everywhere. Amazing shit. But, if WPI catches you in the steam tunnels
or anywhere down there, you get expelled. I was lucky, didn't get caught.

Please tell us more of these catacombs and tunnels at WPI. I have
never even heard of them. The most legendary place I heard of was the
SKULL tomb. Or some of the secret rooms in the Alden tower.

I never found too much at WPI. There is a steam tunnel across the
quad that's not very interesting. There's some small tunnels and blind
rooms in the "Underwater Kent" building. And there's a few various
other hidden places like Harrington room 007 and Salisbury floor 5
1/2, kind of an attic crawl space.

It's kind of hard to believe that there is a tunnel that leads from
WPI going across Worcester to Grafton. Even from Holy Cross that's a
long tunnel.

About 14 years ago I could enter the UMass Amherst steam tunnels
from the house at the base of the hill below the Northeast quad.
The house seemed to be offices for artists or something.
Find your way to the cellar, and go to the wall that is closest to
the Campus Center. There is an entrance there. Probably boarded up.

From that entrance you can go by the Campus Center and get all the
way to the physical plant. I was almost caught once when I was on
one of the upper levels of the steam plant. I think we escaped by running
to the roof, onto the coal chute, and down to the ground.

(You can also enter the storm drains down by Southwest)

Hrm, you mean that little tiny house by the side of the road that looks
like it shouldn't belong there? Might be worth checking out.

Unfortunately, I think these storm drains have been locked shut. Oh well...
