By RICHARD JOHNSON with JEANE MACINTOSH and SEAN GANNON

Is this marriage smoke & mirrors?

DAVID Copperfield and his ubermodel Claudia Schiffer are busily
blasting accusations that their magical love is really contractually
arranged.

Herbert L. Becker, an illusionist and author of "All the Secrets of
Magic Revealed," is making the claims as part of a $50 million lawsuit
he has filed against his publisher, Lifetime Books, and Copperfield as
well. However, the starry couple insist their love is rock solid.

Two years ago, Copperfield sued Becker to try and block publication of
the book, alleging that he was revealing secrets learned from
Copperfield in a confidential interview. Though Copperfield lost, Becker
says the mega-star was nevertheless successful in having the publisher
delete crucial passages from the book that revealed how some of
Copperfield's tricks were done.

Becker, who has written a new book, "More Magic Secrets," filed his own
lawsuit July 3 in Florida alleging Copperfield and Lifetime were in
collusion to censor the first book.

In order to prove that Copperfield, whose real name is David Kotkin,
has a history of manipulating the media, Becker says he will introduce
documents in court showing that Schiffer is under contract to play
Copperfield's girlfriend for all it's worth.

Becker says he's already sold copies of faxes between Metropolitan
models, Schiffer's agency at the time, and the promoters of
Copperfield's shows to the German magazine Bunte and Paris Match, which
this week has a cover story detailing the terms by which Schiffer was
paid $20,000 to go to Copperfield's show in Berlin in '93, where they met
and "fell in love."

However, Becker told PAGE SIX's Jared Paul Stern that "They're just the
tip of the iceberg. The most important documents I have are a
preliminary agreement signed by Claudia to carry on with the sham
relationship, and a longer, more specific agreement spelling out the
details."

In a prepared statement, Schiffer and Copperfield reply, "The claim
that have a contract or any sort of financial arrangement to pretend to
be in love is one hundred percent false," although they admit, "Claudia
... was contracted by a promoter to attend a gala event where she and
David first met" -- which contradicts Copperfield's earlier claim that
"magic" brought them together.

"Nobody denies those two faxes are real," says Copperfield's lawyer
Bert Fields. "But they're trying to confuse that with a so-called "love
contract.' That's fake." Fields says it's "most likely" that a suit will
be filed against Paris Match which will also "deal with Becker." As for
Becker's own suit, "it will be vigorously defended."

Copperfield's publicist, Phil Lobel, also says Becker's claim that he
has "love' contracts is "laughable" and "totally false."
