My used 87 22re toyota truck didnt come with owners manual. I was wondering
what the manufacture said about what grade of oil to put in it? Mileage is
119,000 plus.

Bill

10w40 oil should not be used in most cars because they found out that 10w40
viscosity changes were not as stable as 10w30. 10w40 was causing rings to
stick in the grooves. small diesel trucks can still use 10w40. I have seen
and read the papers on this subject when I was working as a fleet service
mechanic, we had 1000 cars to maintain.

Those diesel trucks will do better with 15W-30.

Allow me to disagree. Stuck rings are FAR more common in diesel engines, and
diesel engines, overall, require FAR more from an oil than gasoline engines
in terms of shear strength and durability. I will agree that I prefer to
not use such a wide viscosity-range oil as 10W-40 in a (much) newer auto
engine unless it's a good synthetic, but an unmodified '87 22RE does not
qualify for that hesitation in my opinion.
