Is it possible to change the code without knowing the original? I bought
the car recently and have no documentation. Any help is appreciated.

YES!!!

The control box for the keypad entry system is located under the dash on
the passenger side. Little silver box about 4x4x3 inches (if memory
serves). There is upon that box a seven-digit code (there are some other
numbers and letters; ignore them. look for the 7 digits). This is your
master code. The master code does not open the doors; it is only used to
set your code.

Once you have that number, close the doors and enter the 7 digit code at
the keypad. A long beep will begin. You have 10 seconds or so to put
in your new code. Then wait. The car will beep twice (again, if memory
serves). The new code is in there.

Be forewarned, however, on selecting your new code: you cannot program
a code that require the keys to be pressed in sequence (like 1-3-5-7).
New codes can be 4-7 digits. The new code also cannot begin with two
presses of the same key (I think).

Thanks to Tim for this info!

If no one else has a better suggestion, then perhaps you might consider
getting a replacement control box from the junkyard with a legible sticker.

I changed the code on my 92 maxima last week. I was all set to get upside
down under the passenger side dash in the rain when I remembered that the
dealer told me about the master code being on the firewall. (10 yrs. ago,
yes, the memory was correct).
On the engine side of the firewall, in the center, there is a plate mounted
to the firewall (about 2inx3in). on one side of that plate under the rivet
is a small silver tag with seven numbers stamped into the tag. (this was
the master code). Worked perfectly, I needed to reprogram to use some of
the number buttons that had been oversued over the past 10 years before they
started to go bad.

Good Luck.

Bill
