I am considering buying a Blitzsafe auxillary input adapter for my 2003 525i
(with navigator, factory CD changer, non-dsp) to enable playing my mp3
jukebox without an fm modulator.

Does anyone have comments about the company or the product with respect to
performance, installation, or suitability?

There is another option from a company called Soundgate, but their new
product isn't on the market yet and it they seem to be slipping their
schedule. Does anyone have any thoughts re: their products?

Thanks,

I have a BlitzSafe in my 330i and couldn't ask for better sound quality or
compatibility. I have seen posts from other 3-series owners that some
Soundgate adapters sometimes fail to work with the steering wheel controls.
That's not a blanket condemnation of all Soundgate products, many have good
luck with them. But I don't recall anyone complaining about the quality of
the BlitzSafe if they bought the right one and installed it properly. Just
make sure the adapter is designed to work with your specific car and mp3
changer.

Sounds like you're talking about an MP3 player that you mount in the
trunk or something. I think the poster was referring to an adapter
that plugs into the auxiliary input of the existing stereo allowing
people to utilize any stero device with a standard stereo line output.

I, too, am looking for this option to eliminate the use of my fm
modulator (i-rock). Did not realize anything was out there yet. Just
went to their (Blizsafe) website and see some items, but no details.

I just went to ther website and found this document...

http://www.blitzsafe.com/blitz_catalog/blitz_aux/blitz_auxinstallnotes/inst_bmwaux_dmxv1/inst_bmwaux_dmxv1.html

Looks like it plugs into the connector where the cd changer interfaces
in the trunk. So, if you have a cd changer (as do I), you're out of
luck with this product. Grrr...

I have yet to find an adpater that is supposed to plug in direclty to
the radio so that you can just hookup your iPod or Nomad jukebox. The
radio has the auxiliary input, just no adpater yet.

Well if that's what you want, and yours is also a 2003 model, you don't have
to look any farther than the BMW parts counter. Read this from BMWNA:

The Auxiliary Audio Input Accessory Kit for 2003 Model Year 3 Series (E46),
5 Series (E39), and X5 SAV (E53) is now available (as of July 2003) at your
BMW Center's parts department. This kit provides a direct audio input into
the radio that allows you to plug in an MP3 player, portable CD player,
cassette player, or any other audio device equipped with an audio output,
such as a headphone jack.

Included with the kit is a cable, mounting plate, mounting hardware, and
installation instructions. The input cable plugs into the back of the
in-dash radio control unit and has a standard 3.5mm stereo female audio
connector on the opposite end. The mounting plate attaches the audio
connector firmly in your glove box.

Please bear in mind that this kit is not compatible with 3, 5, and X5 models
built prior to 2003 Model Year because of changes in radio software and
hardware.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at 800-831-1117.

P.S. When I read that the original poster wanted to hook up an MP3 jukebox,
I assumed he was talking about a trunk mounted "keg." BlizSafe does indeed
make adapters for those that work with or without a changer.

It took a few phone calls to various dealersships and bmwna, but I have one
on order. The list is $39.95, no info on installation charges yet.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks very much to the poster who led me to BMW-NA who gave me the part
number (82 11 0 149 391). I bought the auxillary audio input kit from
my preferred BMW Center, and $39 and 1 hour DIY labor I now have an
excellent aux input in my E39. This kit works for 2002+ E46/nav, E39/nav,
and E53/nav, but there are also kits for cars without the navigator. Forget
the aftermarket stuff...this is the optimal solution, for me any way. My
Archos MP3 jukebox sounds so great without the FM modulator.

You're welcome. It's a brand-new part produced after a fair number of owner
requests. A BMWNA rep had just posted some info about it in the message
boards at www.roadfly.org a few days before your request here.

I am glad you identified yourself. I couldn't find the original thread but I
wanted to express my apprciation to you individually. My 2003 E39 was
already fun to drive, now it is even more fun! It is days such as this that
I wish my work commute was more than 1.7 miles! Thanks again.

I kmow the feeling. My commute is about 2.5 miles, but I get off work at 2
a.m. and the roads are empty. Sometimes my odometer adds 25-30 miles like
magic before I pull up out front of my house.
