For those of you who have experience with both mic's how would you compare
the two. I know about the 58, but it's been suggested I get the AKG for
vocals over the 58 and I can't find a place to hear the AKG's, so your
opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jack

Jack first I have your case all wrapped and ready to go next trip to ups
now the 880 is MUCH clearer than the 58 but not nearly as rugged

Also, the 880 isn't instantly familiar to every muso on earth. I've
never had anyone demand a 58 once they heard the 880 though. Supposedly
the 880 grille has been beefed up recently (hence all the blowouts on
the older ones); anyone seen one ?

George
Do you remember an old E.V. advertisement that showed an E.V. mic used
as a hammer for a 4" nail!
Now that's rugged :-) Really not that bad. Had a vented model (no
proximity effect) I liked for guitar and a omni that worked well for
High hat, acoustic piano etc. The condensers were bad for voltage
spikes.
At the other end I have 4 Sennhiser 421's (cream coloured, 4 pin screw
connector) 1 still works! But it sounds great.

The D880 has a hyper-cardioid pattern, the SM-58 is cardioid. I can
usually get more gain before feedback with the D880.
The D880 does not have the aggressive upper-mid (4K - 6K) boost of the
SM-58. Instead, it boosts treble (5K - 12K). Sounds brighter.
I prefer the D880, but it depends on your voice.

It's the EV 635A small inexpensive omni. Pretty good sound for an
inexpensive mic. Not good for live work though.

I have an 880 that I just received. I will take note and compare the 2 for
the ruggedness factor. For sound quality the 880 is better. I certainly hope
they hold up. I just sold a bunch of them. Jack you might want to look into
the Audix OM3. I like those and they are very rugged.

I'll piggy back this on Jim's reply. Thanks to those who responded. I
guess I just missed a blow out sale at Mars for the 880's, they had a $37
price tag on the, but of course when I seen it they were already gone.
Could have got a couple at that price.

Anyone have an idea why they were going so cheap? Are they being
discontinued for something?

Thanks,
Jack
