This should come as a surprise to no one...

http://www.universalhub.com/2011/leader-allston-civic-group-says-proposed-pizza-pla

"Allston Civic Association President Paul Berkeley found a new reason
to oppose a propose Stone Hearth Pizza at Barry's Corner: The beer and
wine license it would use comes from a restaurant in an area of
Roxbury the city has said doesn't have enough restaurants serving
drinks with meals."

Just the latest tactic in his misguided, and ultimately futile, effort
to oppose a family-friendly restaurant in a part of Allston that
desperately needs it. Now he's supposedly fighting for the rights of
Roxbury to have more beer and wine? What an absolute farce.

I absolutely cannot wait until it gets approved tomorrow, and
renovations can begin on that old, sad gas station. I'm sorely
tempted to cancel plans I have tonight so I can attend the ACA meeting
and give Mr. Berkeley a piece of my mind.

Responding to Brad's post re: ACA/Paul Berkeley:

And for whatever it's worth, the nearby residents of Brighton who are
also affected by this decision (and disagree with Berkeley) apparently
don't get to weigh in on ACA's opposition either? (But thank goodness
we live in a place where we can publicly agree to disagree.) As I
communicated directly to the Boston Licensing Board the last time
around, in my opinion this is an important opportunity to improve the
quality of life and economy of Allston for most Allston-Brighton
residents most directly affected by the Board's decision.

Actually, after a bit of online research about ACA, it appears we in
Brighton DO get to weigh in: "... the ACA is open to Allston-Brighton
residents to speak and act as an advocacy group on any and all issues
that directly and indirectly affect the quality of life in
Allston-Brighton." "According to Berkeley, the ACA is open to
Allston-Brighton residents." from:
http://www.krefetzlaw.com/52710BostonBulletin.html

I stand corrected (by myself). It doesn't change my opinion that Mr.
Berkeley's comments do NOT reflect the opinion of many of us. But we
DO apparently have the ability to join ACA and vote as part of that
organization if we are so inclined and are actually able to make it to
their meetings.

The ACA has always been open to all Allston Brighton residents. All you have to do is attend a meeting and ask to be on the mailing/email list and you will be notified of issues facing A/B.
You may not agree with this ACA decision but Paul and the ACA have been protecting the residents of Allston Brighton for a long time. It seems that in the last year many more people have opinions on the neighborhood, which is great.
But, Paul has been the lead voice in this neighborhood for many years and he is consistent in his opinions on expansion in A/B. It's great that people are interested in a project and attend a meeting but most people do not attend all meetings. I think Paul deserves a little more respect and thanks for what he does than he has received on this blog.
I do not attend all meetings, and I did not agree with the Stone Hearth decision but its good to know Paul is always watching out for Allston residents when we can't make it to a meeting ourselves.

My 2 cents, whatever it's worth. Paul Berkley has given untold hours to a
cause that is stressing and ungracious a lot of the time, I don't like some
of his stands!! but stand he does, thats a h--- of a lot more than most.
So, stop bashing and go to the meets and be heard. I am sorry to say I
don't go, except when i had a cause or 2 to push through, I know the appeal
process and all that goes with it, I think there have been some real jerks
as members through the years. So, right or wrong I stand with while
sometimes objecting to Paul Berkley. B.P.S.

Well said about Paul, a good neighbor and neighborhood advocate. Come to the meetings and be heard. You can sign up for email notifications with Paul.

I want to thank the others who have written about Paul Berkeley and
add my two cents: I have known Paul for more than twenty years and
have worked with him on the Allston Civic Association during much of
that time. Paul is what urban neighborhoods need--an intelligent,
tireless and committed voice to deal responsibly with the constant
change all urban neighborhoods face. And I repeat what others have
said--come to ACA meetings and be a positive force for your
community. And to those who send anonymously, put your name to your
beliefs, what are you afraid of?

I happen to disagree with Paul on Stonehearth, aIthough I think his
analysis is, as usual, correct in that they cut corners that are in
place to protect the community and should not be rewarded for doing
so. On balance, however, I agree that Stonehearth will be a welcome
addition and while I don't want to see Stonehearth rewarded for
cutting corners, I would not want to penalize the residents of that
particular section of our community, who will benefit from
Stonehearth's presence. (I say this as someone who has been to their
location in Needham several times) The trouble is, it's a slippery
slope. If we make an exception for a "good" project like Stonehearth,
how do we hold the line against the next bar that plays the same game
and will be a detriment to the neighborhood. It is that nuance that
Paul has tried to highlight, and which seems to be ignored in all the
posts supporting Stonehearth and attacking Paul.

The problem I have with Paul is that he is against all new liquor
licenses.
What corners did Stonehearth cut?
