As you aware about the national wide cycle yatra of Himanshu Kumar, he is now in Rajasthan and reaching Jaipur on 30th July, 2010. On this occasions we are organising a meeting where he will share his experience with all of us.

Those of you who participated in the 26th June meeting of the PUCL met Himanshu Kumar, a Gandhian who worked for 18 years in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh State with the Tribals of the region. He had gone to Dantewada from North India as his guru Nirmala Deshpande, told him to go and establish the principle of Ahimsa in struggles for justice of the Tribals.
He did Development work in that area, including implementation of forests rights act, NREGA, Right food schemes, Children's issues, education, health, sanitation. It was only when he stood by the tribal people against the atrocities that the State Government, the police, salwa judum and other Government functionaries meted to the Tribals in the name of Maoism, that he became a eyesore for the Government. He had started filing these reports in the SHRC, NHRC, Bilaspur High Court, Supreme Court that they wanted him out of that area.
The Government created adverse conditions for him, they arrested his workers, they demolished his Ashram, they prevented anybody from giving him a house in Dantewada town, they kidnapped the woman who went to Supreme Court against killings in her village by the Police. It was then that he decided to leave the State and travel all over the country and talk to the people about the plight of the Tribals which even the media was not reporting.
On the 27th of June, one day after emergency day he began a cycle yatra and decided to take the message to the people. His first State was Haryana, presently he is in Punjab and on the 17th of July he will enter Rajasthan from Sangariya in Hanumangarh.
The yatra is called "Save Tribals ! Save Environment! Save Democracy ! Save India"

Everywhere that he is going, young and old are cycling with him to the next village or two. In Punjab when the rains and floods came they changed their mode from cycle to Bus/Jeep. In every village /kasba/ town/ city they are holding Public meetings, Special Interaction sessions with youth, radio talks and also Press conferences.
We could do the same in Rajasthan.
