Updating many (>million) keywords max CPCbids

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it is possible to increase the max CPC bid on a keyword level using a batch process without first retrieving the keywords (so without requesting the AdGroupCriterion object for these keywords). For instance: I would like to be able to increase the Max CPC bids for all keywords in a specific Campaign (on a keyword level) with 20%. However I would like to avoid requesting all the AdGroupCriterion because this campaign might contain > 1million keywords.

Hi Lasse,

It is not possible to modify the bid of the keywords without knowing their ids. You have to retrieve the keyword first and get their ids and then increase their bids using the BatchJobService. You may use the CampaignCriterionOperation or the AdGroupCriterionOperation for the batch process. Let me know if you have further clarifications.

Thanks for the information!

Could you give me an estimation on how long it would take to retrieve ~1 million keywords? I would be running these kinds of jobs regularly, and will be updating around 5 million keywords per day. At this point I'm simply trying to estimate the viability of this approach.

I cannot provide an estimation on as to how long that will take. However, for proper handling on this kind of batch operations, you may check this guide for the best practices on implementing large operations.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

One more question: 

We currently have basic access level, and I'm considering whether we have to apply for standard access. What confuses me a bit is the counting of operations. 

If I would make a batch job with mutates the bids of 1 million keywords, in requests of 5000 keywords each. Will this count as 1 million operations or 200 operations?

Hi Lasse,

You could apply for Standard access to have unlimited operations and unlimited report requests per day. However, take note that regardless of access level, all API operations are subject to system rate limits.

For your 1 million keywords, you can make 200 request that contains 5000 keyword operation each.
