Hi Google Ads API support,

We have noticed that for one account when we include "segments.click_type" in the ad_group_ad report we loose the cost for certain campaigns, in this case video campaigns. Even though there is a cost in the campaign overview in Google Ads UI for these campaigns. Why is that? We know that impressions can get inflated but we have never seen any mismatch with the cost before.

Hi Maria,

Thank you for reaching out.

So that our team may take a closer look at the reporting issue, could you provide the below details as well :
  • your customer ID
  • the complete request and response logs, with the request-id, generated when the segments.click_type was included in the query
  • same as the above logs and id, generated when the segments.click_type was excluded from the query
If you haven't yet, logging can be enabled by navigating to the Client libraries > Your client library (ex. Java) > Logging documentation, which you can access from this link.

You may then send the requested information via the Reply privately to author option. If this option is not available, you may send the details directly to our googleadsa...@google.com alias instead.

Hi Peter,

We have responded to googleadsa...@google.com over a week ago but we never get any reply back?
This is now happening for another account as well. Any updates on this?

Kind regards,
Maria

Hi Maria,

I work with Peter and let me provide support to your concern.

It appears that you did not receive the reply that I've sent privately. With this, aside from the information below that my colleague is asking, could you also provide the generated API response where we can see the values returned for each field?

Hi again,

We've found this old conversation that mentions that click type may affect cost:
https://groups.google.com/g/adwords-api/c/wlo2n_Bccak/m/nEVW-adh1RYJ
We just want to know how, when, and why this happen so we can better advice our customers on how to work around it, we already have several asking about it.

Hi Theodor,

Thank you for your follow up and for attaching a related discussion in our thread.

As for your question on the behavior of the click_type, this other discussion should provide more insight and example. It states that :

"The other forum suggestions are correct: if you want a reliable count of impressions then you should run a report without the ClickType column.  As mentioned in the reporting documentation on the ClickType column:
Since ads can serve with multiple click types displayed, impressions may be double counted and the totals may not be accurate.
Using headline and phone calls may work for some cases, but could lead to double-counted impressions in others.  For example, if you have a Call Extension you can set up "Show the following links" with either:
  • Both my website and the phone number
  • Just the phone number
If you choose the first option, then your report by ClickType may include an impression under both Headline and Phone Call.  If you choose the second option then the impression may only appear under Phone Call.  Even if you work around this particular use case, we can't guarantee that other use cases will work or that this approach will work with future enhancements/changes to AdWords.  The safest and most reliable approach for getting Impressions is to run a report without ClickType."

That said, column or entity (ex. ads) behaviors are in general more of a Product related concern. If you wish to learn more on why some ads may serve with multiple click types, then I would recommend that you reach out to the Google Ads Product Support team instead, via this link, for further guidance.

I hope this helps.
