Hi All,

I was going through the threads regarding visa, bank statement etc. Below I am summarizing what we have done at the time of our admission. I believe not much of the procedures have changed.

1. Showing Fee Receipt of ETH - No need to show this for ETH Students Matriculation Certificate will suffice.

2. 21,000 CHF Amount - Somebody wrote that SBI's bank account will work. I doubt that, although you have checked it through embassy but ultimately decision is taken by the Migration office at Zurich. As per our experience their simple criterion is if a bank has branch in Zurich they have no issues with that. I would strongly recommend to call at Zurich migration office and confirm it.

3. Conversion Rate Issue - Once you open a bank account in HSBC or Citi Bank and get letter from them request them to write amount in CHF. When they write this, they write with exchange rate and date so there is absolutely no room for confusion. It is acceptable since exchange rate fluctuates all the time.
- Some branches hesitate to write in CHF (I don't know why !) so take the letter in form of Dollar. It worked for Prateek. Or you can attach the copy of exchange rate along with letter taken from www.xe.com

4. Showing Education Loan - At our time it was not allowed to show the education loan. They need to see the hard cash in a bank account on your name.

5. Visa Fee - Visa fee for students coming to ETH is half ! So when embassy asks for you the amount then just make sure that you are paying the reduced amount. For us they took amount Rs at Mumbai Consulate. No idea about VFS.

I could able to recall all these core issues. If you have anything else in mind then check the previous threads or ask any of us.

@nitesh: They are there, some of the rules have changed since last year, other information is available in the group archives.

Please take note that the 21,000 CHF amount letter would be needed next year also (whenever you would apply for residence permit) the authorities are not adamant on the exchange rate, they want to see the "21,000" CHF amount. So people should not be bothered too much about the date and all, a recent statement should be fine.

Yes, this info can not be put on the general guidelines since rules can be changed by authorities. I wrote email just to summarize few points so that you guys can compare.

It would be a little late as the authorities claim a duration of 3 months for visa from the date of application but practically many applications do not take that much time. If your visa is going to be delayed do inform ETH they allow delays up to certain time.

I can tell what I did in 2008. I had submitted my documents after arriving here in Zurich. There were some delays like getting student ID card, internet access etc. which are not that great. Please contact ETH International Support or admissions office for the official rules.

In any case, whether you get the statement in INR, CHF or USD, make
sure you write a COVER LETTER writing clearlythe amount in INR and in
CHF, while quoting the exchange rate used by the bank in attached
letter/statement by bank, or the print-out from www.xe.com.

Th GREAT Zurich Migration office was unable to find the currency type
INR written in bold letters on my HSBC bank account. They have lots of
work and too little time, So you better explain things in cover letter
clearly.

Good luck.

i have taken bank statements from SBI.those guys are so reluctant that they dont want to issue multiple statements and when they were asked to check the current exchange rate, they told kya yaar jaldi btao ki kya type karna hai, hamare pas time nhi hai :P,so at that time current rate was 42 point something so according to that they gave me statements. If i would have argued, they would have asked me to go.

Hi everybody

Kapil is right with everything, and SBI bank is NOT accepted by the
Zurich Migration Office, so it is best to choose HSBC or Citibank.
Most students from Asia choose HSBC and there have never been any
problems to get these bank statements accepted by the Migration
Office. However, the statement in INR only is not accepted, the amount
must be mentioned in CHF, EUR or USD somewhere on the statement or in
the cover letter.

Kind regards,
ETH International Student Support

This is the address where we have to submit our Visa documents right ? Can somebody ( my sister ), on my behalf submit the documents at the visa center ? And is it necessary to book a ticket to zurich prior to visa interview ?

No you don't have to have a ticket to Zurich before getting visa.. its totally illogical.
You have to submit documents in person.. otherwise it is at their discretion whether to accept it or not. I hope you wouldnt like to take chances on this.

Yep, thats true. No chances at the last hurdle. Do we have to do anything like immunization for going to Switzerland ? I am thinking of booking a date in this month. Bank statement, passport photo,  filled in application forms : thats all are required right ? do i have to give them a statement of purpose as well ? And to whom should the Cover letter be addressed ?

Moreover they ask for a proof of occupation. I am working in a company and will be resigning from my current job for going to studies. But I will not resign by the time of visa application. I am sure that my company will not give me a no-objection certificate confirming the leave and  saying that I will come back to India after my studies ? What should I do in this regard ?

You have to go in person... second rule on the consulate website !
For the company thing... I am not sure. I have resigned before the visa app.

You are already provided a check list along with the admission letter.. read it .. follow it and tick out the stuff u have... wont comment on this now

Moreover they ask for a proof of occupation. I am working in a company and will be resigning from my current job for going to studies. But I will not resign by the time of visa application. Proof of occupation and no-objection certificates are different. In proof of occupation u have to show where are u working as of now/ in the last 6 months. (last employer in other cases).. Ask your company to give you a "To whom it may concern' letter stating that you work there... if you are hesitant telling them then tell them you planning to make a US trip with family and applying for visa.

I did not do such a thing but then rules might have changed after Switzerland entering Schengen agreement, applicants of this year should throw light on this.

Please check the application form, that would let you know what is required.

do i have to give them a statement of purpose as well ?
We had to give a statement that we will leave Switzerland once the studies are over. But do not get disheartened, it doesn't mean you will not get a job etc. Its a formality

And to whom should the Cover letter be addressed ?

What I had made was just a table with bank details, amount in Indian rupees, Forex rates of the day and equivalent amount in CHF and a note that I had used a website www.xe.com to calculate the amount and a separate sheet of a simple printout of the page from xe.com. I did not write a formal letter, no one is bothered about applicant's letter writing skills they mechanically look for an amount greater than 21,000 CHF, that's it.

Moreover they ask for a proof of occupation. I am working in a company and will be resigning from my current job for going to studies. But I will not resign by the time of visa application. In my case I had resigned at the time of application so I had a letter stating my tenure of employment. But all companies issue some letter stating you are an employee at the specified date, I think any such latest document should be sufficient.

Thanks for the reply. I opened an account with HSBC in Guwahati last
week. The assistant customer service manager told me that all the
things like debit card, passbook will be sent to my home address. How
long does this process usually take ? The HSBC guys told me that it
takes around 5-6 days. It has already been a week. Can someone with
experience with HSBC throw some light ?

I opened the account today. The guy told me it will take one week to two week.
Too long i think.
But the online account must be active in a week's time so that one can deposit cash in the account without delay.
I would suggest waiting this week, or call the banks and harass them ;p.

I had a similar problem, you can deposit money, I mean you are giving the money to the bank why would they deny, right. Operating further on the deposit may take time however.

FYI:
HSBC lucknow and mumbai both gave a lot of pain for me to obtain account statement in CHF through some one else. Lucknow branch said they do not deal with CHF so gave me statement in INR/USD (I do not remember). Mumbai office rejected/called later when I had provided a signed letter approving my friend to collect the document on my behalf. He went there with his ID but they rejected or called him later, so I used an INR/USD account statement with a cover letter giving conversion to CHF

Hi!

I am in the process of applying for VISA for Switzerland. I will be joining Masters in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at ETH in September 2010. While I was going through the list of documents required for the VISA, I came to know that the embassy takes a language test.
What sort of language test is it? Do I have to appear for it? . Kindly provide with the details.

Apart from the acceptance letter, they require the receipt of payment of fees from the college (but that I will be doing once I arrive in zurich). I have only received the offer letter and the matriculation letter from the university (after registration). Will these work?

I have attached the list of requirements from Swiss Embassy, NEW DELHI  that I am refering to and highlighted the mentioned facts.

Kindly guide through the process.

Hoping for an early response.

Hi Saumya,

First of all welcome to the CBB club :) ... The embassy requirement list is common for all the students irrespective of the institute you are joining in Switzerland. For ETH, there is no language test (At most take a copy of your TOEFL score and requirements list provided to you along with your offer letter) .

Yes, bring your acceptance and matriculation letter along with you. If you are getting any scholarship then also take it along with you.

Immediate reply plz..
I am admitted to masters course in EPFL. I don't have B.Tech Degree certificate and TOEFL Score with me right now, I forget it in Bangalore, where I work.

I am in Lucknow now and waiting for Visa interview date at New Delhi Office.

Some time they can ask you for your original degree certificate for verification purposes. In my case, interview was in Mumbai and though that lady was strict, she didn't see even a single original documents.

Just carry ur transcripts and other stuff and provisional degree in case.

But i have noticed one thing,if you say that you are going to join EPFL/ETH,they become lenient ;)

Hi Vidya.

The time required for opening and getting bank statement varies greatly from place.
I got my bank account and statement in 2 days, where as a friend of mine from Assam got it after 2 weeks.
I hope you are getting the picture.
But typically it should not take more than 4 working days.

Hi all,

Did anyone applied student visa at New Delhi, one of my IIT K (EPFL admitted) friend is telling me that when he inquired few days back at Delhi Embassy, they asked to show funding for 2 years.

I am going for interview there in few days, can anybody share the experience of New Delhi interview. As of now, I am showing one year funding and also I asked Mumbai Consulate of Switzerland Office, they asked me to show only 1 year funding!!

reply as early as possible.

Hii,

I am having some more questions regarding the visa.

For the visa do we have to give them sealed transcripts or simple photocopies will do ? Do we have to take the originals with us for the visa interview ?

Should the tabular CV be of one page ? Do we have to write about just professional experience or about all the research activities as well ? It may not be possible to restrict it in one page if we are to write everything in the CV, especially in the tabular format. I will be thankful if anyone can send me a sample.

And what should we write in  the letter of motivation/future plans ? I have not been able to extend it beyond half a page till now !!!!  Can someone send me a sample ?

And do we have to make to commitment to leave switzerland after studies on bond paper ?

Hoping to hear from you. Thanks.

No just the photocopies will do and yes take with you originals of everything. In case they want to verify.

Should the tabular CV be of one page ? Do we have to write about just professional experience or about all the research activities as well ? It may not be possible to restrict it in one page if we are to write everything in the CV, especially in the tabular format. I will be thankful if anyone can send me a sample.

Just write the main points in the CV. You do not have to elaborate things over there because this is more of a formality. Your qualifications are gauged by ETH which it has already done by offering you admission. Now, just make it as concise as possible and stick to the tabular format provided. I don't have the CV I submitted for visa but if I remember correctly it was a lot reduced from what I send to ETH for admission.

And what should we write in  the letter of motivation/future plans ? I have not been able to extend it beyond half a page till now !!!!  Can someone send me a sample ?

Use the SOP that you send to ETH for admission. Reduce it if you want to. Add the lines about what you will do after finishing your masters. 2-3 lines on future would be sufficient.. 1 page is more than enough.

And do we have to make to commitment to leave switzerland after studies on bond paper ?
Nope just right it under To whom it may concern.

Dear Anurag,

Everyone has to show only 1 year funding,as a student visa case, except they update funding criteria. But, if Delhi Embassy replied that you have to show funding for 2 years then, the best thing is you have to farward Delhi Embassy email to Mumbai Embassy regarding funding. So, it is not confusing in future aswell for others.

I sent a mail to the Delhi Embassy. They haven't replied yet.

Anyway I had called the VFS guys and they told me to mail the embassy saying that I might have to go for an interview. Is it better to submit the documents directly at the embassy ? They have listed their timing as 8-30 am to 9-00. Aint that ridiculous ? Half an hour for document collection from every person applying for a visa to Switzerland !!!!

In the visa application form I have ticked multiple entry option ? Do they give multiple entry to students going to Switzerland ?

Duration of intended say : 24 months. Is it fine or should I ask for more ?

Thanks in advance.

I submitted the documents in Delhi, but not in emabassy. I did it in VFS.
I think even if you tick multiple entry you will get single entry.
I dont remember the duration intended, may be I also wrote 24months but since masters can be finished in 3 years
you can write 36months.

am but that is the time for entry. they took my documents after 9 am
after making me to wait for some time. i think you should be there by

Hii Abhishek,

Thanks for the reply. I am submitting the following documents to the Swiss embassy for my visa. Can you just have a look and tell me whether they might ask for more documents ?

1. Bank statement of around CHF 22000 from HSBC
2. Admission letter + matriculation Certificate + registration confirmation from ETH
3. Proof of my employment + income certificate
4. Filled out D type visa application form
5. TOEFL scorecard
6. CV in tabular form
7.Transcripts and degree certificate
8.Letter of motivation stating my intentions after MS and reason behind choosing ETH
9. Declaration to leave Switzerland after studies
10. Photocopy of first and last page of passport

I am giving three sets of each of these documents and carrying the originals as well.

Am I missing any required document here ?

And I would like to know if there is any advantage of submitting the documents to the embassy over submission to VFS ?

Are we allowed to carry items like cellphone, bag to the embassy while submitting documents ?

Thanks in advance. Hoping to hear from you.

From December 15th, 2008 onwards, the Embassy of Switzerland is issuing Schengen visas (implementation of the Schengen Agreement).

As far as I remember there is no interview in case of ETH. You better call them up and ask.

I got my passport couriered back (by VFS Delhi) a few days back, after
preliminary checks from Embassy. Do I need to submit this passport
back to Embassy, or wait for any call/mail from their side and then do
so?

Hi All,

I got a mail from the International Student Support of ETH Zurich that
my visa has been approved by the Migration Office in Zurich. They
asked me to call the Consulate in Mumbai and find out how and when I
can get my visa. I called the VFS center in Mumbai and they informed
me to submit a copy of the mail and my passport at their office.

Does this mean that I have to go to Mumbai again to get my visa? Is
there no possibility that I can submit my passport at VFS bangalore?
(I did that when I had applied for the Austrian visa a couple of years
ago). Seniors please guide me through.

Abhinav
