I am interested in using the API's with a search appliance that has
all of the help pages for a secure web site. Is this possible?

I could be mistaken, but I believe that a search appliance maintains
its own index which is not really synchronized with Google's master
index. The AJAX Search API's as built only query the master index.
Also, if by secure you mean private, you would be in violation of the
TOU to use the Google AJAX Search API. In theory, though, you may be
able to develop your own API. It would be comprised of a server-side
script to query the search appliance and parse the results, and a
client-side script which would take the returned results and put them
to work.
