During the last week I have a problem in opening my Gmail account
whereby the CPU usage goes off the scale and effectively crashes my
laptop.
The Norton file CCPXYSVC.EXE is the problem that Windows Task Manager
identifies.
Using another PC there appears to be no problem.
Any ideas gratefully received?

I don't have Norton, but I'll bet that there is a way to turn off "web scanning" or something along those lines. CCPXYSVC.EXE appears to be a service which Norton uses to scan every single file your computer requests off of the Internet. Because Gmail requests several different things while loading and is fairly CPU intensive during the process, the scanning that the exe performs only aggrevates the problem.

Note that if you do turn this service off, then you won't have files scanned before they reach your computer, but generally speaking this won't be a problem.

I've also had this problem repeatedly.  Restarting the computer helps.

I've also noticed that if I allow the computer on startup to 'do its thing' longer than the usual boot time before I start opening internet windows, the problem doesn't occur.

Still, it would be nice to have a 'fix' for this, so I'll stay tuned to see what others have to say.

If you're using Firefox, it could be an extension that's doing it.
I've seen Greasemonkey scripts mess up and get in an infinite loop or
make an http call way too often too fast. If you suspect that's the
case, start removing them one by one and each time check to see if
it's still doing it (or remove all and start adding one by one).

Paul - There is a temporary fix for the problem, which will be helpful if it only occurs occasionally.  At the bottom of your screen, on the right side of your toolbar, usually two icons to the right of "show hidden icons" button, there is a curclicued something or other (it's too small to identy, but it's in yellow on my toolbar).  Point your mouse onto it and a message tells you that Norton Anti-Virus is enabled.  Now do a right click on it and the brief menu gives you an option to "Disable Auto Protect."  Choose that and you will be given a choice of how long to keep Auto Protect disabled. I suggest choosing the default 15 minutes, which is all you need to fix the problem you are encountering.  By the way, Symantec is constantly reporting that other programs interfere with Norton Anti-Virus and the bad mix can cause other problems.  I found by experimenting that the Microsoft/MSN Spysweeper program presented that problem, so I disabled it. - Wolfeman
