Installation status of .NET Framework on my system

Hi All,

I wanted to bring my system up-to-date for writing .NET Forms or Web
apps, so I downloaded and tried to install both .NET Frameworks 2.0
and 3.0. In each case I got a dialog offering two alternatives:
restore the framework to its original state or uninstall it. So the
frameworks are probably already up-to-date.

However, Microsoft Visual Studio | Help/About says I have:
-- MSDE v. 7.0.9466
-- Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0, v. 1.0.3705
-- A list of installed products, but none of them mention a .Net
Framework

Do I have to do something special to get VS.NET to acknowledge that
Framework 3.0 is installed?

I'm not sure on the exact "rules" of this, but for

.NET 2.0, I've always used VS2005 and for
.NET 3.0 I've always used the Orcas CTP

Thanks for the feedback. Your take on the situation is confirmed by
Wikipedia.

I'm looking into Visual Web Developer 2005 to see what it can do.

The express editions of VS2005 are quite useful. And you *may* be able
to find a CTP version of Orcas somewhere (MSDN, if you have a
subscription), or elsewhere if you don't ;)

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the encouragement. This all started because I wanted to
play around with some guy's library for computational geometry. When
I tried to load his solution, my VS.NET complained that the solution
file was created by a later version of VS.

I'm a retired developer, so I don't want to spend $500 or more just
to "play around".

Downloading/using Express has gone pretty well. I overlooked the
requirement that I uninstall Framework 2.0, so I'll have to reinstall.

Hi Richard, glad you got it working (to an extent!). I've luckily got
msdn copies of Visual Studio which I can use at home, but from what I
hear the Express editions are very useful, for I guess the "hobbyist"
developer. Not sure what is missing from the full version, but I'd
warrant a guess that its still pretty functional. Good Luck!
