Late Thursday, organizers were told the agreement to host Galloway at Alhambra Palace Restaurant was being rescinded due to a mistaken double booking. Happily, space at DePaul University is available. DePaul became the center of political controversy around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2007 in the wake of the university administration's decision to deny tenure to Professor Norman Finkelstein, one of the most prominent critics of the Israeli government in American academia.
On Saturday, the university will host George Galloway, touring nationally to promote Viva Palestina: Lifeline from the US to Gaza aid convoy. The last convoy took over 100 vehicles to Gaza from the United Kingdom, and UK Parliament member George Galloway has linked up on his U.S. tour with Vietnam veteran and peace activist Ron Kovic to launch a similar — but even larger venture from the States.
The effort aims to raise ten million dollars and recruit hundreds of Americans to get desperately needed medical aid to Gaza, which is still reeling in the wake of its brutal bombardment at the beginning of the year. Over 1,400 people were killed in that Israeli assault and invasion, and thousands more lost limbs or were otherwise maimed by phosphorus bombs and other weapons. Pastors for Peace is serving as fiscal sponsor for this effort — the largest grassroots medical relief effort for Gaza in U.S. history. We leave on July 4 for Cairo — and on to Gaza.
There is still time to support this vital cause.
Join us on Saturday at DePaul University in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood.
