Madison, WI. The Immigrant Workers Union (IWU) among some 30 organizations will organize a Rally on May 1st from Brittingham Park beginning at 11am.
The theme of the rally this year is “The March for the Poor, the Immigrants & the Workers”. The broad coalition of organizations is calling for the community to come out and unite under common demands like the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, the withdrawal of the bus fare increase, paid sick leave and the end of sheriff Mahoney’s collaboration with I.C.E.
In Wisconsin, there will be two main marches: a statewide rally in Milwaukee that will try to match last year's accomplishment of being the largest rally in the country, and in Madison, where local issues and national demands will tie into the National Movement in Wisconsin's capitol. “Madison has the second largest Latino population (25.000) after Milwaukee (200.000) and although we will not have the numbers of Milwaukee we think is important to contribute with another rally in a major city like Madison to keep building pressure on local issues that affect our community” says Alex Gillis from the Immigrant Workers Union.
