On Sunday, July 5, at the International airport in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran army opened fire on the unarmed peaceful demonstration of thousands of Honduran citizens surrounding the facilities in anticipation of the arrival of the constitutional president Manuel Zelaya. At least 2 people were killed, and there are reports of over 30 people wounded. The constitutional president was prevented from landing by parking military vehicles on the landing strip.
We repudiate this brutal repression of the Honduran people by the illegitimate anti-democratic de facto government of Roberto Michiletti, installed by a military coup on June 28th. The military regime has suspended all constitutional rights, shut down the independent media, detained members of the press, community and union leaders, and refused to abide by the demands of the Honduran people, defied all international law and disregarded the international community’s call to give up the unconstitutional seizure of power and in favor of the return of President Zelaya.
We support the Honduran people in their demands:
· For the immediate end to all repression against the Honduran people; respect to human rights and justice for the victims of the repression.
· For the immediate removal of the illegitimate, criminal and unconstitutional government of Roberto Michiletti
The leaders of the military coup d’Etat are a by-product of the United States. Top military leaders were trained by the U.S. Army at the School of the Americas, widely known as a place where torture techniques were taught to many Latin American soldiers, many of they listed today internationally as guilty of crimes against humanity.
Also, the United States has “invested” millions of tax-payers dollars to support a small group of people through the National Endowment for Democracy, people who today support the military regime.
For those reasons, we demand from President Barack Obama:
A RALLY and PRESS CONFERENCE will take place on Monday, July 06, 2009, at 4:30 pm, at the Tenochtitlán Plaza (Blue Island and 18th St.,) in support of the people of Honduras.
