PADCHARI JAGAR ABHIYAAN – WAKE UP PEDESTRIANS CAMPAIGN
Campaign to voice demands of Pedestrians
LOKAYAT is organising a protest demanding construction of good quality of FOOTPATHS for pedestrians on all roads. At present, the entire emphasis of the PMC is on building new roads, widening roads and building flyovers, to accommodate the increasing number of cars and other private vehicles on Pune's roads. These are increasing at the rate of 600 a day, that is more than 2 lakhs a year. The growing traffic congestion, accompanied by a near-complete absence of footpaths, has made walking on Pune's roads a most hazardous task for Pune's people. People simply have to maneuver their way through the traffic, often causing accidents. Usually the victims of accidents are padestrians.
Even where footpaths are there, they are in bad condition. Often, they are blocked by pipes, holes, hoardings, and other types of construction. Cars are parked on footpaths, and two wheelers often can be found driving on them.
Lokayat, in association with other organizations working on traffic and transportation issues in Pune, including PTTF, Janwani and Sajag Nagarik Manch, is organizing a HUMAN CHAIN tomorrow to voice these concerns:
Date: Wednesday, December 24, 2008
Time: 6:30 to 7:30 pm
Venue: Road near Tilak Putla, Mahatma Phule Mandai, Pune.
Volunteers of Lokayat and other activist groups will be forming a HUMAN CHAIN on the side of the main road passing through Mahatma Phule Mandai, where there is no footpath, and thus creating a footpath for pedestrians to walk.
DO JOIN US.
