SEMINAR ON BETTER ROADS

18 JUNE 2006
Hello friends,
Yesterday Me and Ashwin attended the Seminar on Current State of Roads in
Pune and Citizen's partnership held by "Better Roads"
First thing that struck me was the clear cut objectivity with which these
group was working. Their only concern was to bring about positive change in
Pune's infrastructure.
Mr. v Patil, former secretary Govt of Mah gave the presentation on Road
construction maintenance. He also explained in detail all the technicalities
associated with road costructions. He explained us the best practices and
important requisites for road construction. He had done extensive survey on
Pune roads and showed us with snap shots of roads what went wrong with them.
He also briefed us with details of government procedures and malpractices
that lead to bad roads. After going through the seminar we could only
conclude one thing If the municipality and the Contractors follows laid down
procedures and guidelines there is no way that we will have roads that we
commute on daily in pune.
The municipality as well as the contractors pay no regards to the procdeures
laid down. Corruption is blatant and that in turn is leading to poor
infrastructure that we are handed down with.
And the shocking revelation is that The Municipality or the Contractors have
no concern for the tax payers all they need is more money.
At this juncture we all felt despaired knowing the state of affairs in
government bodies.

Then we had the session on Citizens Participation from a senior Editor of
Indian express Mrs Vinita Deshmukh.
She pointed out cases of citizens initiative that lead to a rethink by
government bodies. The first example she cited was that of Jessica Lall
Murder case, second one and theobvious one is the Anti-Reservation protest,
the other was the acceptance of Green DP project for Pune. Then she also
cited how RTI was being used effectively to keep track of government bodies
functioning and using PIL's to obtain justice. She showcased the use of RTI
by Katraj residence for getting proper water supply and Dissolution of
Lonavla municipal council by use of RTI and PIL when it was found that
Lonavla Municipal Council members were siphoning off tax payers money.

This was kind of rejuvenating, yes all these cases had not resulted in
miracles, but they have lead to positive change. The important message that
she wanted to convey was that Just by running signature campaigns and online
e-groups things might not change at all, yes these are the first steps to
find out like minded people and join them together for a concern. Once the
first step is schieved it is time for ground action. You need to start
taking up objective acheivable goals and try and fulfill them.

We were also informed that "Better Roads" had filed an RTI petition towards
identifying the mismanagement of the construction of Karve Road and Kumtekar
road. This is their first step towards affirmative action and the make the
Municipal council and the Contractor refrain from even thinking of swindling
public money.

Future initiatives planned by "Better Roads" is to create inspection groups
that will with the knowledge of Municipal Commisioner inspect road
costruction activities and report anomalies. They need more volunteers and
active participation from the community. Please do your bit by popularising
this campaign and also by contibuting to it in your capacity.

TREE PLANTATION

Hi,
The importance of trees in purifying the air, as
natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance,
preventing soil erosion, as medicines, habitats for
faunal species, providing nutrients to the soil etc.
is well known.
The activity of tree plantation was carried out at
Marigold Society, Kalyaninagar, on the banks of River
Mulla-Mutha. The Rotary club of Pune, Kalyaninagar and
some girls from Bishops School, Pune also took part in
this activity. The total strength was round about 60.
Following is the list of members of Bharat Uday
Mission took part in this activity.

1. Narendra Agrawal
2. Rahul Adik
3. Viren Rasane *
4. Amod Vaishampayan *
5. Rohan Rasane

*- New members
Thanks!! Volunteers you did a great job!!

He that plants trees loves others besides himself. --
Thomas Fuller

Our volunteers planted 35 plants. Trees which were
planted are Neem, Gulmohar, Banyan and Peepal. The
air, water, soil and climate of the Pune region are
most suitable for the growth of these native species,
and hence their survival rate is quite high. In turn,
these support the birds, insects and animals of this
ecosystem. These species also are most effective in
fighting air and noise pollution.

All the volunteers showed great enthusiasm in planting
these trees .Once these trees grow they would help in
conserving the environment around as they would
recharge ground water, prevent soil erosion and
prevent siltation of their river.

The maintenance of these trees would be done by the
Vascon construction group. The gardening department of
PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) has taken an
initiative to make tree plantation compulsory in the
Green Belt area which is owned by the
builders/construction group.

Mr. Ghorpade, Gardening officer of PMC is in the
process of allocating an area for us where we could
plant a maintain trees. So our next tree plantation
drive would also include tree maintenance.

Polio drive

Hi,

Wonderful job again !!.
Volunteers have set an example yet again by making
this activity a huge success. Hats-off for their
efforts .They have added another feather in
BM'cap. They made this activity look very easy. This
activity looks fairly simple on paper but in reality
it is a tough job because people were not aware about
the polio the drive, many don't go to the booth also,
this is not in the case of remote places but also in
areas where there are polio booths which are setup and
have an awareness campaign also.

Following is the list of volunteers how carried this
activity.

Team A

1.Priyanka Mehta
2.Santosh Kolte
3.Punit Shiknis
4.Mangesh Edke
5.Prafulla Mankar
6.Balaji C
7.Vihang Sapale
8.Rohan Rasane

Team B

9. Manoj Tiwari
10. Prashant Nandi
11. Pankaj Arora
12. Amol Deep
13. Satya V
14. Akshay Sangekar
15. Chetan Pawar
16. Prashant Kagawade
17. Pratik Khadloya
18. Abhijeet Rajwade

Volunteers assembled at City Pride,Satara
Road, at 7.30 am.

Dr Dighe (Government Medical Officer) provided Polio
Vaccines and Vaccine Carrier. The objective of the
Polio Drive was the same as the drive which was done
on 9th April .It was to cover houses of laborers,
wagers, Construction sites, migrants, Street Hawkers
community etc. which remain uncovered due to lack of
records on the local government database. Volunteers
were grouped in two teams to carry this activity.
We were a bit anxious at the start because we thought
no one would entertain us, this proved to be wrong as
people living in these remote areas gave us full
support in what we were doing.

This was the first time our team wore the BM T-shirt
for the purpose of propagation.

The areas of Pune that were covered are
1. Mitra Mandal Canal side slums
2. Treasure park and the nearby area,Sahakarnagar
3. Walawekar Nagar and nearby area
4. Panchawati Construction,
5. Ambedkar Vasahat
6. Padmavati Nagar remote areas
7. Katraj Slums
8. KK Market Canal Slums
9. Lake town Construction and near by construction
site
10. Wonder City Area Ambegaon

The total number of children vaccinated by our
volunteers is 472!!(This amount is a huge amount
considering the areas which were covered.)

Thanks a lot volunteers for carrying out this activity
with excellence.

This activity was a grand Success, and I hope that we
succeed similarly in all the activities we carry out.

What we learned from this activity:-
People come ahead if we are doing any social activity.

Other areas which need attention :
While we were vaccinating the children we have found
out that the children in the construction need some
special attention, may it be health wise(many children
seemed to have some kind of infection ) ,economic
support by education and also financial support.

Rohan

Ø       Some members raised

Permanent Office Space for the Chapter

Ø       BM-Bangalore would now have a permanent physical presence. A permanent office space was located at the following address. It would start functioning immediately. Continuing with the idea of having meetings at a central location in the City, the weekly meetings would be held in Cubbon Park. However, it was decided to conduct at least one meeting in a month (preferably the first in the month) in the office. The office would be open daily between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to begin with. The working hours would be expanded gradually. The address of the office is: BM-Bangalore Chapter, 'Radha', No. 44, 2 nd Floor, 6th Cross, 7th Main, Vishwajith Layout, (Off Airport Road), New Tippasandra Post, Bangaloreâ€'560 075; Cell: +91-9886674807

Propaganda

Ø       It was decided to begin a mega membership drive on ground . We wold be reaching to thousands of common people and spreading the word of BM. To begin with the colleges in the city would be targeted. Volunteers would work for publicizing BM by putting up kiosks and distributing pamphlets. For this the Propaganda Committee is to come up with a draft pamphlet by next meeting. Any body who wishes to be part of this campaign should contact jsecreta...@gmail.com.

Finance

Ø       The Finance Committee would collect all details about opening a bank account for BM-Bangalore, to which anybody can deposit money from any part of the globe. The deadline for this task is 1/7/06.

Projects

Ø       The Projects committee is to follow up the Electronics city initiative to develop villages and study the possibility of participating in a Youth Leadership Meet to be organised in Bangalore.

RDT

Ø       The RDT Committee is working on various subjects like identifying the skills of Members and Supporters to assign suitable tasks to them.

Ø       The Committee is also working on identifying various departments of the Govt. for settling various matters.

Ø       Another important task for the Committee as per the Vision of the Chapter is to initiate a study on the demography of local constituencies / wards in the city, with a view to contest local elections around 2010.

Yahoo Group / Mail Moderation

Ø       It was agreed to moderate the mails on the Yahoo Group to avoid objectionable matter from being circulated through the Group. Also, this could help in avoiding unnecessary chain of mails or avoidable heated exchanges over the Group, which spoil the friendly atmosphere of the Group and present a sorry picture to the world. However, the moderation would be minimum and would be done by a committee of three Members. The criteria of moderation will be worked out soon.

Secretary's Note:

2. New Responsibilities of Executive Body

The Executive Committee consists of:
President - Manoj
Vice President - Mujeeb
Secretary - Rahul
Joint Secretary - Bony
Treasurer - Divyashri
Exec. Body Member 1 - Rakesh
Exec. Body Member 2 - Deepthi

For 2 months, we experimented with dividing the responsibilities as follows:
Mujeeb - HR
Rahul - Propagation
Bony - Projects
Divyashri - Marketing(Fund Raising)
Rakesh - Policy Research
Deepthi - Finance

But we found that there was still no proper division that was happening. So, we identified a new set of responsibilities for each of us.

We've divided our goals into 4 major domains:
Education
Health Care
Livelihoods
Water & Sanitation

We will have a Research and Knowledge Management Cell which will feed the above domains with all necessary inputs.

We will have 2 support groups
1. HR & Marketing
2. Finance & Propagation
which will support all projects taken up under the 4 domains.

Persons responsible:

Research and Knowledge Management - Rakesh Kumar

Education - Tejeswi
Health Care - Bony
Livelihoods - Mujeeb -> Entrepreneurship Cell - Paresh
Water & Sanitation - Mujeeb & Rakesh

HR & Marketing - Divyashri
Finance & Propagation - Rahul

Miscellaneous - Manoj

We put this to vote and all present voted in favour of adopting this new method of implementation.

We discussed all details regarding the National Meeting. All members are requested to mail in any questions/suggestions/queries that you would like the Central Teams to address by Thursday 10am IST to the yahoo group.
All questions will be compiled and sent to the Moderators.
Departure: Thrusday midnight
Return on: Monday evening

4. Grievance/Queries/Suggestions Session
~ Registration of Bhumi
A member pointed out that the way registration of the NGO was done, was not correct.
We accept that there was a miscommunication on the part of the Executive Bosy and the Central Teams and the trip in Jaipur will be to resolve all pending issues so that we can move forward. This question will be discussed again at our next General Body Meeting where we will be better prepared to answer this.
~ Meeting of few members during the week
A few members meet everyday at the Eat Street lawns and a member felt that this decreased the importance of the General Bosy meeting. We would like to state that anyone is welcome to join us there and we use that time to interact, more as friends than as members of Bhumi.

All major decisions regarding the organization will be put to vote and members are free to contact any of the Executive Body members for clarifications on any issue.

We also welcome members to air their greivances at the Meetings so that the Exec. Body will have a chance to address it. This may also be an opportunity for us to address some of the same problems that other members may also have.

5. Monthly Contribution(all amounts in Rupees)
Srikar - 50
Imtiaz - 100
