Subject: democracy festival in Pune
To:
Dear friend,
We are organising a DEMOCRACY FESTIVAL in Pune from Jan 26 to Jan 30, from our Republic Day to the day Gandhiji was killed.
We were thinking of organising a GLOBAL JUSTICE AND SOCIAL HARMONY FESTIVAL in Pune in association with some educational institutions of Pune, including Marathawada Mitra Mandal, Azam Campus and Symbiosis, and then we heard about this Democracy Festival which is organised in Pune by various activist groups of Pune for the last 4 years ever since the Gujarat Genocide, so we decided to join them and organise one big festival. We decided late, just a week ago, hence this late mail.
It would be a festival celebrating the spirit of democracy, celebrating the spirit of protesting injustice, defending people's rights to voice their opinions and come out and fight for a better world in which the basic needs of all can be met, which is very much possible today, and all have an equal opportunity to develop their creative abilities.
We are trying to mobilise youth from various colleges to participate in this festival, especially the youth from the three educational institutions mentioned above.
Tentatively, here is a list of programs that we have chalked out for these 5 days:
Jan 26: Morning:
10 AM TO 1 PM:
Flag hoisting followed by MARCH FOR DEMOCRACY, starting from S M JOSHI AUDITORIUM, to be inaugurated by
MAHESH BHATT / NANDITA DAS / ARUNDHATI ROY / Prof YASHPAL -(one or more
of these), who will also give a talk at the end of the March. We can
have songs, placards, etc, on the way of this MARCH. We are inviting all possible activist groups /NGOs of Pune to join us for this MARCH, with their slogans etc.
Jan 26:
Evening: 4 to 8 pm :
Documentary film screenings, Venue to be decided. The films will be in
two slots, from 4 to 6 pm, followed by tea break, and then from 6.15 to
8.15 pm. There would be a discussion after the films, after each slot
(i.e. One and a half hour of films, and half hour of discussion.) We
will try to get some director like Rakesh Sharma / K.P.Sasi to
inaugurate and lead the discussion.
Jan 27: SUNDAY :
Morning 10 - 2 noon: Film festival, at a venue to be decided.Same layout as on Jan 26 evening.
Jan 27: SUNDAY: Evening 3 to 6 pm: Film festival, film TAKING THE SIDES, at NFAI auditorium. It is a one and
Jan 27: SUNDAY:
Evening 6 to 9 pm: Film festival continued at LOKAYAT hall, which is walking distance from NFAI.
Jan 28: Morning:
Inter college competition, probably poetry competition, from 9 am to 11
am, at a college, probably MARATHAWADA MITRA MANDAL college. Followed
by Seminar, in which Prof Apoorvanand to speak (speaker not confirmed
as yet), from 11 am to 1 noon. THIS IS FLEXIBLE, we can shift the topic
of SEMINAR depending upon availability of SPEAKER to JAN 29 morning
also.
Jan 28: Evening: cultural program, in which Jaysi to perform her
"Lamps
on Lilypads", which presents a contemporary intercultural experience of Kathak dance,
Hindustani music, poetry, and story-telling, a provocative
performance engaging tradition with the modern moment, exploring freedom and
peace, challenging notions of success, and reveling in Love.. This would be for say 2 hours. It is simply superb.
ONE
SLOT EMPTY HERE - We can have something else too in this, as we have a
total of 4 hours, and Jaysi can perform for 2 hours. HALL BOOKED for this day -
Tilak Smarak Mandir on TILAK ROAD.
Jan 29: Morning:
Inter college competition, probably ELOCUTION CONTEST, from 9 to 11 am,
followed by SEMINAR, In which Adv. Prashant Bhushan to Speak (speaker
not confirmed as yet) on Judicial accountability, and how courts are
gradually playing a negative role.
Jan 29: Evening:
Cultural program. This too is to be decided. Entire slot is empty.
Options are Iqbal Niazi's program / Aditi Mangaldas's program /
Swatantratacha Powada / some Sufi singer from Delhi recommended by
Shabnam Hashmi, etc. Shabnam Hashmi was suggesting some Sufi singer or
some band, who is supposed to be good, this would be a good idea to
attract youngsters. In that case Venue can be MARATHAWADA MITRA MANDAL ground.
Jan 30:
Morning:
Inter college competition, probably Street play competition (this is
not sure, as Pune is already organising a street play competition on
Jan 24, so we can either invite some of them to join us on Jan 30
morning, or else have something else, say a INTER SCHOOL POSTER MAKING
COMPETITION, OR We can have only a seminar on some important issue,
like the one addressed by Irfan engineer / Ram Puniyani / Neeraj on
Communalism at MMCC some time ago.
Jan 30: Evening
; Closing program - Mallika Sarabhai to perform, confirmed, Venue to be
decided. Possibilities are Vishwabhavan of Symbiosis, or Nehru Memorial
in Camp, or? Note We will need a big auditorium, and Tilak Smarak /
Bharat Natya Mandir are already booked, so we have these two options,
or Koregaon Park auditorium.
Do participate in these programs. You may also send in your suggestions on how to improve it. We also need you to volunteer to organise these programs. We actually need to multiply these programs to make a truly festival atmosphere. So let me know if you can help in some way.
in solidarity,
