FYI - It takes 14 hours to restore from a backup and it just
finished... however...

Due to the awesome Dell support that we purchased - new parts are
being couriered over to the data center and the technician is meeting
me out there in 2.5 hours. So I think we'll just stay down and get
the master server up and running today, otherwise we'd be experiencing
another 14 hour downtime by restoring back to the master.

BTW, I know there are issues with this. Our master-slave replication
model is not working properly otherwise this wouldn't have taken 14
hours to restore, and will be a top priority to get working the
*right* way.

Thanks for the update, Aldie. I hope all goes well with the part replacements.

Well, we waited that long, we can wait a little bit longer.
Barely :-).

Truth be told: thank you A LOT. Hope that you will have some holidays
afterall.

Best,
m

Thanks for keeping us updated, it's appreciated.

This downtime was anyway an eye-opener for me, in rather unrelated
aspects. So I learned from it. Nothing bad without something good
coming out of it. I've got 2 reviews pending for posting, too. :P

Thanks for the update! And good decision to get the premium support
from Dell!

Where I used to work, we didn't realize our master-slave replication
wasn't working until a failover was necessary. Sometimes you just
cannot test these without having serious downtime... Hopefully, you
find the solution and this 14 hour maintenance window doesn't become a
weekly event...

Thanks for the update, Scott - next time, tell Derk to cut the blue

Speaking of the master-slave relationship, can't you put that new
employee on the job?! :D

Aldie, geeks like me wouldn't mind hearing what your replication
solution is. The model we're working on at work is to have the
database journal written to a shared drive, and the backup database
reads changes from that drive and updates itself. That means the
backup database is only a few minutes behind the master. Customers who
really need this solution to work reliably would use Oracle RAC for
both the primary and backup databases. It should be very sweet, when
we get it going.

Yet another reason to get that 2008 supporter badge, and keep the
contributions coming in 2009! More funds = better hardware = faster
BGG & less downtime.

Thanks for the hard work Aldie. Good luck, and hope the day isn't too
rough.

Will BGG supporters be getting a pro-rated refund for the downtime?

At $10.00 per year, you are almost up to a refund of 2.7 cents.

Please supply your address and/or account details so the members of
the group can chip in for your loss :-)

Thanks for all the hard work! I know there has been a lot of bitching
about this, but I think it's a necessary evil that will make everyone
happy in the end.

Sweet, Aldie. Glad to hear it!

Dell's been great with our servers, too. Their consumer end support
and equipment isn't the best, but their medium/large business support
is top notch.
