Hi group. Of my 8 Portuguese Great-Great grandparents, 7 come from
Lagoa.

Joao Pacheco is the remaining one and I was wondering if anyone
possibly knew this family or had any more information. He was born 9
Mar 1888 to Jose Pacheco and Rosalina Moniz in Nordeste, Sm. He came
to America in 1902 and married Maria de Andrade in 1906. They had 8
children.

I know this is vague but I have no other way to get information. My
grandfather has never had contact with his father's family. If anyone
knows how I can find the village possibly that would also help. I just
don't know where to start with this branch; I also haven't been able
to find any immigration information.

Jesse,

I'm confused.  Your subject line says your ancestor is from Nordeste on Sao Miguel.  In your post, you ask how to find his village/freguesia.  Do you know if he came from Nordeste or not?

If you know he immigrated in 1902, the emigration out of the Azores for Sao Miguel only is online:
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/passaportes/default.aspx?divisao=3
Use Internet Explorer.  1902 is in 2 different files, so you'll have to search both for a Joao Pacheco whose parents are Jose Pacheco & Rosalina.

Hi Jesse,

The use of Nordeste can be confusing as Nordeste is the Municipal Council, and it is also the village/freguesia. I guess the question is, are your people from the village Nordeste or from one of the other villages in Nordeste? Either way a look at the passport records would be a good start as they would show the village.

Hi Jesse,

I can just offer an FYI. My (now) husband's great-grandparents were
Joao PACHECO and Jacintha COSTA from the village of Sao Roque on Sao
Miguel. They had a son, Antonio PACHECO, b~1885 there.
Unfortunately, I don't know anything else about the family.

I've posted about this family before, so there is information in the
archives of this Group, and in genealogy Lists, etc.

Hi Jesse,

I just went to a map of Sao Miguel and was reminded that Nordeste is
almost on the other end of the island from Ponta Delgada (Sao
Roque). So, your Joao PACHECO and my husband's Joao PACHECO were
probably not directly related. However, I have been curious whether
families moved from one part of the island to another, and was it
fairly easy to do that by boat?

(Antonio PACHECO came to MA / US ~1905. Unfortunately, there seems
to have been a dozen of them coming to the US around the same time.)

Sorry Cheri; I do know he came from Nordeste. It was the Parish I was
referring to as what I was trying to find out. I did look through that
resource at one point; I went through all of them but could not find my
Joao. It's very possible I skimmed over him. When I have more time I'll
try looking again.

Iggy,

They are listed on the Azores Genweb: http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/maps.html
Click on the island (in your case, Sao Miguel) and scroll down to N for Nordeste.  You will see only 1 church listed for Nordeste, called Sao Jorge.  The third column lists the years that the microfilm covers (1563 - 1884).

The 1902 immigration may be his best guess.  You'll also have to search 1901 and then 1903 and possibly keep expanding the the years, or try other American sources to figure out the immigration date.  The 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses all ask for the immigration year (a sample of what is asked on each U.S. Federal Census can be downloaded from Ancestry.com's Learning Center for FREE: http://www.ancestry.com/trees/charts/census.aspx)

For other ideas on tracing your immigrant, check out the Azores Genweb here:

I have Joao Pacheco married to Rosa de Jesus Sept 26-1878 in Nordeste,
Sao Jorge. Also Jose Pacheco de Resendes married to Ludovina Rosa de
Jesus Aug 28, 1879. Not the same I realize, but just in case someone
made an error you can check on these.

Jesse,
I found this Joao Pacheco in my database that is related to my husband's maternal grandmother Maria Paixao da Costa born March 27, 1888 in Rosario, Lagoa, Sao Miguel.  You may be able to connect to this line at some point.
The /Diana I noted at the end of the place where an event occurred is Diana Silva who has done extensive research in Lagoa and other villages in Sao Miguel.

Rosalina. My grandfather died at 42 and never came to America ,but I am
wondering if there is a connection somewhere?
