I was having trouble when I went to certain sites. I would receive a msg
that I neede ActiveX to continue. It seems it was already on my laptop, but
I assumed it was corrupt.
I decided it would be a good idea to delete it and reinstall. The only way
I could find to delete it is with 'RegSeeker' - which backs up you deletion.
After I deleted it all hell broke loose! I went back to undo the deletion
and received a msg in French that it was corrupt!!! Aaargh!
After searching around I found a suggestion to run 'sfc /scannow'. I did
for about a half hour. When I went back it seems everything worked fine, of
course, except the internet. When I attempt to get on the internet, I use
Google/Advance Search as my home page, it come up but the section of the
google page where you put in what you want to search for is missing! OK I
go to Yahoo. When I go to most site I get a blank page!!! It goes to the
site but nothing comes on my screen.
[I am using XP Pro SP3 on a Dell Inspiron 1525.]
When I went to Outlook Express to send this it came up mostly blank. I
worked around some of the settings and got it to work.
What do I have to do to redeem myself?
Goodwill,
Luke

Well then try repairing IE. You can do this from add/remove programs. You
look or IE 6.0 and internet tools and click add/remove as *if* you were to
uninstall it. It will come up with an option to Add a component, Repair,
or Remove. Naturally you want to make *sure* you select the second or
middle one *before* you lick Ok. This repair will not work if you didn't
do the default install BTW.I.e. if you added things such as vector drawing
support etc.
Another thing to check is network in control panel. Telling us what you
use to connect to the internet (in terms of *real* hardware) and what is
actually listed there.
Bad/misbehaving internet connections/browsing behavior have to most causes
of any computer problem, so be patient.
IE is insecure. THat version is less secure than #8.
And theres a new exploit for code injection via an activeX script in IE
on XP. Vista and W'7' are not affected, fyi.
If you want to fix your shitty IE you'll need to hack the Registry.
Too much fucking work & hassle...interferes with Slack...
Firefox is way better.
Run No Script add-on also.

That's not going to repair corrupted files so probably won't work. He
*did* run sfc and assuming that it repaired the right files, it still

Quit top-posting. Don't bottom-post. You don't have a sig delimiter so my
reply to the Singapore Spammer doesn't apply to you.
Great suggestion. I do have Firefox installed, but I had it going thru a
proxy. I removed it and it works fine. This, to me, would seem to indicate
that my problem is with IE6. Do you agree? Perhaps I should just install
IE8 as was suggested. ???

Nope.
Top-posting is similar to writing a book, or having a conversation,
backwards- putting the answer before the question. It's illogical and non-
contextual.
Bottom-posting, although marginally better (placing the answer after the
question) is still non-contextual.
In-line posting is the way to go. place the parts of your reply directly
below the parts of the previous post to which you are replying. Then snip
away the parts of the previous post on which you have no comment,
especially the previous poster's signature. Proper newsreaders will
automatically do the latter.
You will notice that what I have written is posted on the bottom, but is
not bottom-posted in its most strict definition. What I have written is
actually in the context of your reply, and correctly written below what
you wrote.
If you had written more, I would either have quoted it below here and then
place my reaction to it below that, or failing that, I would have snipped
the rest and stopped typing right here.

A. He's not spamming by putting a business link in his sig. (It's really
beyond me how anyone thinks that his posting of a link to a computer

Read a bit, pass comment, read some more, pass comment etc. Just like
spoken dialogue. Far easier to understand things. A long monologue
followed by another long monologue means neither monologist is necessarily
referring in context to any particular point the other is making.

I'm not laying down any rules, just explaining what, in my experience,
makes for a coherent, sensible and easily followed dialogue for all
concerned. A poster may have the most detailed and correct solution to
some question in a newsgroup, but if it's written in a single block either
above or below the previous post and totally out of context with the
points made in that previous post, I'm sure as hell not going to read the

Figure?
Try System Restore in Safe Mode again.
At this point, we strongly recommend a reinstall. You can already see that
System Restore is having problems, Other software may also have new problems
which you have not discovered yet. So when you've got the time, make a
backup of your documents, e-mails, etc to an external drive and do a Restore
to Factory (if your system has such a feature) or format and reinstall
Windows XP.

My point exactly.
As a people, the Irish are not given to obeying any rule, any time, or

It is that trait (among others) which endeared them to the hearts of the

Now I'll admit that when asking for or receiving written help for a software

Sorry to burst your bubble, mate. Having someone on is, indeed, light-
hearted teasing although it can end up, on occasion, in fisticuffs.
Slagging, or 'slagging off' is somewhat more malicious and can end up, on
occasion, in fisticuffs.
