Check any parts you get if the drive is SATA I or II, it shouldn't
matter for 1 drive if you get a SATA I controller. Some SATA drives are
plain PATA drives with a different board so the performance won't be
SATA speeds.
Also check the drive power connector, and if you have enough connectors
in the PC , so you don't need an adapter

or a splitter first,
http://www.usb-ware.com/power-y-splitter.htm
or a combined splitter / SATA drive cable.

You said, motherboard IDE and hardisk SATA.
You could get a SATA Host Adapter, i.e. a card you plug into a PCI port.
like , http://www.usb-ware.com/2-port-sata-pci-card-external.htm
means you don't use the secondary IDE.
An adapter for the secondary IDE

The SATA upgrade kit allows you to connect up to 2 Serial ATA hard
drives to an IDE motherboard

What laptop?
What SATA i/f?
External would be a simple thing like a cardbus adapter.

drive in an external powered box
