Egrets, herons, godwits (aplenty), redshanks and maybe greenshanks are
seen most evenings on our stroll along the banks of the Hamble, but hey,
one up on the wife, I've spotted a snipe.

Hoorah for me.

How's stuff in Snipeland then?

Wotcher, Dodgy.

Alas, things could be somewhat better here, Mrs S has been in hospital
for the last six months with her old problem (not for sharing, soz)
but at least we're seeing signs of recovery at long last.

So, I've been learning to look after myself, the first time for nearly
50 years. It's a basic existence, but at least I'm keeping my head
above water. Apart from that, life in Snipeland is much as ever with no
other alarums or excursions; not much news but no other big problems,
thanks to whoever arranges these things.

How's life with yourself, old friend? Still rolling that barrel?

Six months? Jeez. That is some problem. Sympathies to you both. Four days
was enough for me.

Had one knee replaced and the barrel will stay unrolled, as it were, till
the other one gets sorted. The 'dodgyknees' epithet has been accurate
these past ten years and I finally bowed to the pressure of extreme pain
and had the right one swapped for a shiny new metal and plastic job.

Not really what I wanted but three months in, I am well pleased with the
result and can't wait to get the other one done.

Any road up, apart from that, life's a bundle of fun. No complaints
anyway. Still cleaning windows, still riding me motorbike. Still not 70
yet. But it's getting closer. ;-)

Seems strange to be 'doing it' on usenet again. I really miss the old
girl.

Glad to hear that the bionic knee is working well, I hope the other one
gets done soon. I'm still idling along, getting out for the occasional
spin in my ragtop, although this year I didn't manage to make my annual
pre-Easter pilgrimage to Exmoor for a blast around quiet, driving roads,
but ho-hum, maybe next year.

Poor old Usenet is but a pale shadow of its former self, alas. Most of
my best froups have either dwindled to cliquey little echo chambers,
been taken over by trolls or just plain and simple died. Ho-hum again;
at least there are still a few of us diehards left.

I spent ten years avoiding bionicism, for all the right reasons, as far
as I was concerned, but it's fair to say that it is life changing. Twill
be great to get the other one done but it's nowhere near as bad as the
first one so I can carry on carrying till the good old NHS calls me in.

We've been playing a similar game on Xmas day for a few year. Empty roads
were a joy, but we found 2016 Xmas day, everyone else seemed to have the
same idea. Bastards.

Yes, I shall never go over to the dark side. Even if Twatter does go to
280 characters, it still won't replace this medium.

I'm down to four groups. This one, one that is purely for railway photos
and two that are the realm of people of our age. And how depressing is
that at times. Must spend a few minutes doing a group search. There must
be something out there that fits my bill.

I seem to have a slack handful of froups with just one correspondent
in each, it could almost be email...

I'm no good at email, I owe mail to loads of people. The trouble is,
with it being personally addressed there's an implied obligation to
respond. I like the way that Usenet is just sort of shot out of the
blunderbuss for all (or none) to see and to respond to if they wish.

You could count yourself lucky, *I* have a slack handful of groups that
no-one frequents. Apart from one group that is full of older folk moaning
about their aches and pains, which I probably look at to see how lucky I
am, and group dedicated to rail photos, I have little else on the old
format.

Of course there's ZZUC and you, once in a while. ;-)

I'm OK with email but I have exactly *one* (count them) email 'pen' pal,
so it's not hard work. However, you are spot on about usenet and the
blunderbuss approach. None of yer social network 'pretenders' will ever
replace it.

I almost eschew it. I have a presence there under (another) assumed name
(one of the million that *they* don't like) simply so's I can see and
post on a railway based group.

When, out of extreme boredom, I wander 'in' and check out the rest of
Faecebook, I come out in a rash and have to take large quantities of
'medicine'.

Never looked at any of the others. Probably all as bad. Or worse.

I was warned about that before going near it. My 'warner' knew that FB
wasn't my style so when I started asking about the rail photo group, she
said I should be prepared to lose any pictures I post to the FB grab box
and 'don't even think about trying to leave'.

So it's a fake ID and all my posted photos are shrunk to the smallest
practical (for internet purposes) size, and copyright marked.

And deleted after a month. Doesn't stop FB itself using them but stops
other FB users linking to them and pretending they are their own. Which
has happened even with my 'fake' name in the bottom corner.

Used to get a notice from FB if someone 'shared' anything of mine, and
*then* I'd delete it. They stopped that so obviously they wish to
encourage a bit of theft. I delete after a month as a matter of course
now.

I have a little 'cookie clear out' now and then. It's quite refreshing,
for a while, not to be pre-thought, as it were, by a machine. The bloody
thing soon catches up again so it's a bit of a merry go round.

Interesting thing, sort of, soon after we started making use of ZUC for
this conversation, an old old friend appeared on another group. Just for
a while there it was just like the olden days and such fun.

Others joined in and we talked of string, ceiling wax and much else
besides and, obviously, Faecebook got talked of and how it compares with
this august medium. My old old returning friend said that he thought FB
and other social media sites, were proper use of computers. Well written
programmes executing exactly as their creators intended.

I questioned if he knew what he was saying and he queried why I asked
which told me all I needed to know. However, I wrote that IMHO, usenet is
the last remaining bit of the internet that recalls the amazing fun of
twenty years ago.

Cos *they* can't control it or make money out of it.

My old old friend still didn't quite get it but then he's one of those
people who think that 'Windows' is the computer

Toastally agree.

I gave him one of the very latest 'watering and potting on' robot thingies
for Xmas. He screamed with excitement and gratitude. Unless he just
screamed. Hard to tell with some folk.

I bought twenty five quids worth of bitcoin a couple of years ago.
Then I spent about half of it. About six months later I spent most
of what I had left leaving only a few pence worth. I checked it
about a week ago after seeing it in the news a lot and it had risen
in value to two hundred and eighty quid! I checked it again
yesterday and it had fallen in value to two hundred and
thirtysomething quid. It's barmy.

Saw a bloke moaning that he lost two thousand on his Bitcoin (I think he
only had one but I might have got that wrong). When the price started
dropping, he sold it for 18,000. With everyone selling, the price went up
overnight and his would have netted him 20k. And then it plummeted, so he
had made the right move.

He wasn't really moaning because, like you, he hadn't paid a lot and made
over 17,000 profit.

When they first appeared, I thought it was iffy but figured that someone
with a bit of cunning could make a lot of money out of Bitcoin, but I
didn't think I was cunning enough. Mind you, I didn't think the mark up
would be that big. Should have done like you and bought 25 quids worth.
But held on to them.

There are enough historical examples to suggest it might have happened.
The world is full of greedy bastards looking for a quick buck, although I
have no idea what made crypto-currency attractive enough to go the way it
has. If I had to guess, I'd think in terms of a *clever* greedy bastard
with Greek origins, who knows how to manipulate markets.
