Installing a new firmware image replaces the current antivirus and attack definitions, along with the definitions included with the firmware release that is being installing. After you install new firmware, make sure that the antivirus and attack definitions are up to date.

The FortiGate unit backs up the current configuration to the management computer, uploads the firmware image file, upgrades to the new firmware version, and restarts. This process takes a few minutes.

When you follow the upgrade path, FortiGate automatically completes the upgrades, including any required reboots, by downloading the chosen firmware directly from FortiGuard. In this example, FortiGate automatically upgrades to each firmware in the upgrade path, which is 7.4.2 and then 7.4.3.

Fortigate 2, which shows the expiry date "Expires: 2015-01-22", shouldn't have problems to be upgraded to the new version, because it's still in the support contract, but how about Fortigate 1?I've already obtained the firmware file, so will it be a problem to upload it to Fortigate 1 and run it or is there a mechanism in place, which will block that?

The 40C has 2 partitions. When I upload the new image to partition 2(not active), click "upload" and uncheck "boot the new firmware", it won't affect the running system at all? I just want to upload now and reboot at a later point.

1) You will not have an issue manually upgrading the firmware if you have the file, however, you should renew the support for that unit, as you won't receive signature updates or have access to the FortiGuard services. Also it's ultimately a violation of the licensing agreement, but no one is going to be knocking on your door over it. The reason you are able to download the firmware manually is because you have a unit with an active license on your account, if they were both expired you would be denied download access.

For community users, you are reading an unmaintained version of the Ansible documentation. Unmaintained Ansible versions can contain unfixed security vulnerabilities (CVE). Please upgrade to a maintained version. See the latest Ansible community documentation . For Red Hat customers, see the Red Hat AAP platform lifecycle.

This module is able to perform firmware upgrade on FortiGate or FortiOS (FOS) device by specifying firmware upgrade source, filename and whether format boot partition before upgrade. Examples include all parameters and values need to be adjusted to datasources before usage. Tested with FOS v6.0.2

Fortigate devices supported two host key algorithms (ssh-rsa and ssh-ed25519) earlier, but from firmware version v7.2.6 they are supporting only ssh-ed25519. Because of this, the configuration capture failed after the firmware upgrade.

Always perform the firmware upgrade onsite due to the risk of something going wrong and requiring manual intervention. Or have a technician on site if you are unable to be there. Make sure the yourself or the technican have local copies of all firmware versions and configuration files in case network access is lost.

This is my first ever custom video so please take it easy on me. I get nervous and tend to ramble but I hit the high points. These videos will become very frequent and obviously the quality of the presentation will improve as I get more comfortable and in the groove. Anyways, here is a video that explains how to upgrade your Fortinet FortiGate to a newer version of firmware.

Michael Pruett, CISSP has a wide range of cyber-security and network engineering expertise. The plethora of vendors that resell hardware but have zero engineering knowledge resulting in the wrong hardware or configuration being deployed is a major pet peeve of Michael's. This site was started in an effort to spread information while providing the option of quality consulting services at a much lower price than Fortinet Professional Services.Owns PacketLlama.Com (Fortinet Hardware Sales) and Office Of The CISO, LLC (Cybersecurity consulting firm).

We recently upgraded our Fortigates 3240C in a cluster Active-Pass mode and we kept getting the following message on the units. The Primary unit would failover for some reason and the secondary kicks in but during this changeover the internet goes down. We had upgraded from v5.2.7,build718 (GA) to v5.2.8,build727(GA).
We had to regress this last maintenance window. Has anyone experienced this issue after upgrading to the 5.2.8 version?

This is a great site, i would like also to follow your steps to be a great Consultant, but i believe that i have a lot to learn with you. Please, dont stop to share your knowledge with us. From now. I will look to contact you anytime. Thank you ?

Despite careful preparation, unexpected issues can occur during the firmware upgrade process. It is essential to have a rollback plan in place to revert to the previous firmware version and restore normal operations quickly. Consider the following when preparing a rollback plan:

Visit the official Fortinet support website or the Fortigate customer portal to download the latest firmware version compatible with your firewall model. Make sure to choose the correct firmware version to avoid compatibility issues.

Enter the username and password to log in to the Fortigate firewall interface. If you have forgotten the login credentials, you may need to perform a password reset using the reset button or contact Fortinet support for assistance.

Navigate to the firmware upgrade section in the Fortigate web interface. This is usually located under the "System" or "Maintenance" tab. Click on the option to upload the firmware image and browse for the downloaded file.

Once the firmware image is uploaded, click on the "Start Upgrade" or similar button to initiate the upgrade process. The firewall will begin installing the new firmware. The process may take several minutes, during which the firewall may reboot.

Stay connected to the Fortigate firewall interface and monitor the upgrade progress. Do not interrupt the process or disconnect the power supply. The firewall may display status indicators or progress bars to keep you informed.

Once the upgrade process is complete, verify that the new firmware version is installed successfully. Check the Fortigate firewall's system information or firmware settings to confirm the upgraded version.

Ensure that all the firewall's features and functionalities are working as expected after the firmware upgrade. Test various network services, VPN connections, and any other critical configurations to confirm proper operation.
