Accordingto the latest annual survey of hard drive reliability by Backblaze, a provider of cloud backup services, the annualized failure rate for modern hard drives is around 2 percent. This means that if we have a group of 50 people, with every person in the group using two hard drives (perhaps one inside a personal computer and one inside a laptop), then one of those 50 individuals is going to lose all the data stored on the hard drives within a year.
As with so many other things in life, preparation is the key to success even when it comes to hard drive repair and recovery. If you know why hard drives fail and are familiar with some of the most popular hard drive repair and recovery solutions, you have much better chances of seeing your files again.
Now that you know what causes hard drive failure, we have for you a list of top 10 best HDD repair software tools that you can use to analyze, avoid, and solve virtually all common hard drive issues.
Disk Drill is a powerful and user-friendly hard drive recovery tool that handles many data loss scenarios, from accidentally deleted files to lost partitions, corrupted drives, and even unbootable hard drives.
Clonezilla is one of the most useful free hard drive repair software tools. It allows you to easily create full partition and disk backups, which can be deployed on other computers. Clonezilla supports far more file systems than most IT professionals can name, and it even features some basic boot repair tools.
GParted is a free, graphical partition editor that you can use to resize, copy, and move partitions without data loss or file corruption. You may want to shrink a partition to create space for another operating system or a backup partition. GParted is part of many other hard disk tools, such as Clonezilla or Partclone. It can also be downloaded from the official website as a small bootable GNU/Linux distribution for x86 based computers and used from a USB flash drive.
While Windows comes with a built-in hard disk repair tool capable of fixing bad sectors and file access issues caused by them, it pales in comparison with HDD Regenerator. This special-purpose hard drive repair tool has the ability to detect physical bad sectors on a hard disk drive surface and repair them a recovery technology called Hysteresis loops generator. Originally developed by Dmitriy Primochenko, Hysteresis can make unreadable data readable again, and HDD Regenerator makes it easy to apply it on Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10.
Many strains of malware, such as ransomware, can prevent you from accessing important files or even being able to boot up your computer at all. The good news is that Windows comes with a capable antivirus, called Windows Defender, and it takes just a few simple steps to instruct it to scan your entire computer:
Sometimes, hard disk issues are caused by faulty drivers and firmware. For example, a bug in the firmware of some SAS SSDs (Serial-Attached SCSI solid-state drives) produced by Hewlett Packard can cause the hard drives to fail after reaching 40,000 hours of operation (roughly 4 years).
If you want to format your system drive, then we recommend begin the installation of the Windows operating system and choose the Custom install option. You will then be able to format or delete any partition.
If none of the above-described fixes have solved your problems, then you should rule out the possibility that some other component, such as your motherboard is to blame for them. You can easily do that by disconnecting your hard disk and connecting it to a different computer.
Hard disks are mechanical devices, and, like all mechanical devices, they can fail without notice. Some hard disk failures are entirely avoidable, but many others are governed only by luck and chance.
FAQCan hard drives be repaired? Yes, hard drives are repairable. But keep in mind that it is not recommended to try to fix a hard dry by yourself since it is very easy to make things worse. If you want to repair a hard drive, the best option for you is to resort to a professional service.
The price for repairing a hard drive depends on the hard drive type, how severe the damage is, and, of course, on the repair service you choose. In general, the cost starts somewhere around $200 and can even go up to $1000 or more.
I did have to go into the Setup Menu and change the boot order so that the system would boot from CD first. I have the CD as #1 and the SATA drive as #2. Doubt that had anything to do with this but did want to mention it.
This system may require the drive controller drivers for an install, if you happen to have the discs from the system it may be contained with them, or do a lookup on the service tag at
www.dell.com/support to find them.
The best thing to do is to replace the hard drive. Its a workstation not a server. Do you want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting failed hard disk for workstations? I have had issues like this before and trust me,its not worth the time to spend on considering the amount of jobs you still have to do and hard drives are cheap to buy.
Ok, I know its not a good idea but I've done this before and then put in the installation disk and with Disk Utility I could easily repair the boot, if it's crashed. But this time Disk Utility could not find my hard drive.
I'd say this is almost certainly a hardware issue. Likely something internal to the drive (if it sounds like it spins up normally, probably some part of the onboard electronics), the hard drive cable or the SATA controller on the logic board.
I'd advise taking it in to an Apple store if you can (especially if it's under warranty), but if you want to try it yourself, the first thing to do is try a different drive, and see if that gets recognized. If it does, your drive is dead, if not, it's a problem with the logic board or the cable. You can get replacement parts from iFixit, but if it's the logic board, then you're better off getting a quote from Apple for a replacement.
I had this problem too. Fortunately had an identical (working) macbook pro in the house. It was the HD cable. Note that the cable from my other macbook pro looked a little different, but the connectors were the same and it worked ok in the newer macbook pro unibody 13".
What I did was format my disk, Then it popped up with the questioned folderI was confused, and after hours of rebooting and holding alt/options and command R/PI just went to where it said install OS X again.Verified it with Apple again. (Press continue). And now I'm playin The waiting game for my computer to restart and hopefully get back to normal [Macbook Pro early 2015]
I had the same issue. Went to Apple store and of course, they mentioned is the cable (apparently it was a QC problem), so it was free replacement and labour. However, later the y came back to me to say that apparent my hard drive had crashed (totally dead and not detectable), an issue that is uncommon. Leaving me no choice but to just get a new laptop since its not worth paying for a replacements on a 4 year old computer (also had to replace battery). Brought my hard drive for data recovery and the guy was shocked as well because it also haywired their system, pretty scary i think. Now i'm going to be paying 500 dollars to have it shipped to a data recovery center.
There are two types of hard drive errors: logic and physical errors. In most cases, Windows is able to repair a logic error, as it's almost always related to a software mishap. Formatting the drive will almost always fix this. But, if it's a physical corruption, it can not be repaired. You need to replace the damaged hard drive with a new one.
When your hard drive is damaged and your computer can't boot, how can you repair the damaged hard drive? Download and use the pro version of EaseUS Partition Master to repair HDD with a bootable drive.
If your hard drive gets corrupted due to a file system error or the hard drive turns RAW, don't panic. This guide will provide you with detailed steps to repair a corrupt hard disk without losing data. To do this, you must first check if the logical error prevents you from accessing the hard drive. If so, you can check and perform a hard disk repair. If it is a physical hard drive problem, you must send it to the data recovery or repair service center.
You should manually check your fan's power supply and heat first. Make sure that they are working properly. Before you repair your HDD on Windows, watch this video first. It provides you with more details.
Connect the hard drive to another Windows PC and use a reliable antivirus to scan the drive. Sometimes, viruses and malware can cause such errors. Therefore, an antivirus scan may repair the corrupted hard drive and make the drive accessible.
If your HDD is making a clicking or grinding noise, it could be due to a head crash or motor failure. One of the most reliable ways to repair hard disk errors is using a data recovery service. EaseUS hard drive data recovery service is authorized by Western Digital, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Samsung, and Toshiba to open and repair their hard drives and recover data without voiding the warranty.
To check and repair file system errors that cause hard disk drive corruption, you can use the free hard disk repair software - EaseUS Partition Master. It enables you to check and repair bad sectors and then prevent data corruption by fixing file system errors with the Check File System feature.
If the above methods fail to repair the corrupt hard drive and it's still in RAW, then the corruption is severe, and you need to format it. In this case, you should use professional data recovery software - EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard quickly restores lost files from corrupted hard disks, recovers formatted hard drives, and restores data from deleted partitions before you format the hard disk. Even when Windows can't recognize a corrupted hard drive as usable, this powerful data recovery software still supports recovery from a corrupt (RAW) hard drive.
